im guessing the xbone is scaling up from limited rgb to full, causing the crushed blacks and highlights
this isnt just higher contrast, you're losing detail.
"mat_monitorgamma_tv_enabled 1" thats what limited rgb looks like before being stretched to your monitor's full rgb range
Well stretching the range is normal. What isn't normal is doing a a RGB range conversion the wrong way.
A highly compressed youtube video isn't exactly a good way to compare the two versions of the game, especially where contrast and resolution are pretty much the only differences. With the way lossy compression works, areas covered with very similar colors will get compressed more because the details in there are very subtle and the loss of those deals isn't going to be very noticeable unless you look closely. However, high contrast areas get compressed less so as to minimize the visual differences between the original and the compressed video. To put it in simpler terms, well defined edges will remain relatively sharp while less noticeable ones will get severely degraded by compression.
It's quite obvious that the encoder dedicated more bitrate to the right side of the video because of higher contrast. That's why the left side looks like a smudged out mess while the right side is genereally a bit sharper.
This early on the console life cycle it doesn't fucking matter.
Jesus I can't believe people actually argue about it. It's such an immensely minuscule difference that it doesn't matter.

Well, you have to think about the general public. What they're going to hear from this is not the technical specs, but that the cheaper console is also the more powerful of the two. Price vs Power is a very simple equation that the average consumer can come to a conclusion with immediately. Granted, that only matters when we're talking about multiplatform titles rather than exclusives, but given neither next-gen console has a particularly strong lineup of exclusives at launch (Killzone & Forza seem to be the leaders), it's multiplatform that's going to win people over for a little while.
Yeah, later on when the developers figure out how to use each platform to full advantage the difference will likely be lessened, but this is all about the here and now. Which, quite honestly, is always how it is.
In the intense situations the Xbone's increased contrast actually looks more awesome, for example the pics with explosions and close up fire (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-10-29-battlefield-4-next-gen-vs-pc-comparison-gallery). But yeah, outside of those intense situations the contrast is too much and is taking away from the quality.
from what i can see, not that i trust any of these videos/screenshots, the xbone one's contrast is horrible. it's so blunt and obvious. the ps4's more subtle lighting looks much more filmic
99% chance the contrast isn't caused by the Xbox One, but by improper video acquisition which remapped 16-235 levels to 0-255.
(that remapping is the no.1 cause of crushed blacks or gray blacks in video)
In short this comparison is worthless because the video acquisition setup is different.

The fact that the video is compressed won't affect a comparison, especially at 1080p and slowed down.

Except that in the article they state that they did record at 0-255:
So what's going on with Xbox One?
Xbox One was also acquired at full range 0-255 RGB with the dash set accordingly, in line with the other versions - exactly how we approach every Face-Off. We have now had informal confirmation from a very good source that current Xbox One hardware has issues with full-range RGB output that are not present on either PC or PS4. We asked DICE for comment and were told that they are "investigating the video output range and settings for Xbox One".
So the problem does lie with either the Xbox One or the game.
