I was the same way. I liked Snake Eater but it didn't hold my attention, I played like an hour of MGS4 and that was it. MGSV is good to go if you've never played an MGS though you just need to prepare yourself for the crazy Hideo Kojima level shit and just accept it like "Yeah, it's a metal gear game." but it's definitely fine for anyone to pick up and play.

I have only ever played MGS4 on the PS3 back in 2010, and I am loving the everlasting SHIT outta this game. There's some YouTube stories that you can watch and minimovies and such that are just the story bits and cutscenes. This is what helped me out a lot, though:

I highly recommend this game. I'm a huge Mad Max fan and bought that instead, had it refunded, bought MGS5, and haven't stopped playing. Coming from a NON-DIEHARD fan, this is GOTY material, hands-down. It's like... a Mercenary base building management game... reminds me a lot of Jagged Alliance.
