I really wanna learn how to weld..
If your still in high school or even in college try and get into some form of a welding class.
I'm not that great at welding, I'm more of a blacksmith. Sometimes I'll manage to run a good bead though. I also have my own CNC Plasma cutter, after years of cutting parts out with saws and grinders I'm only too happy to have it.

I've used Stick and MIG welders. I'm better with MIG, but I'm pretty shit overall.
I myself enjoy welding I've had a chance to use all of the following MIG, TIG, Oxy & Acetylene, ARC/Stick, wire fed, torches and plasma cutters. I also have some basic use with presses and production welding equipment. All good stuff, I hardly weld anymore simply because I don't need to or have the equipment anymore. I've done more carpentry then welding, but I work two jobs so I hardly have time to work on projects anymore.
Ever see a Cnc plamsa cutting Table?
That's what I have, it's a 3 axis computer controlled cutter. I've been meaning to make a wood routing mount for it as well.

I like to weld with the weld tool :smug:
If your still in high school or even in college try and get into some form of a welding class.
I'm planning to take one or two years of car and bodywork (we have classes in high school divided by different stuff you want to work with in Norway) to learn much more about car bodies and lots of different welding techniques. I've done two years of computing but I kinda knew 90% of the stuff we learned, and I've been home doing nothing for a year and now I've gotten a temporary job. But I want to be fully educated and graduate in something car body related. Welding and painting will be a big part of it I'm fat and lazy, hard work is what I need :v:
I am going to study for civil engineering.(as product designer or something like that) I'm in the first of 3 "preperation" years before the 3 or 5 years of real engineering studying. I also want to make something like that. I want to make this: [img_thumb]http://www.hlportal.de/images/content/hl2/enemies/apc.jpg[/img_thumb] Or more like this: [img_thumb]http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100120111923/half-life/en/images/6/63/APC_concept_side.jpg[/img_thumb]
Actaully this looks like a very doable project with the right funding. As a prop (like that republic fighter tank we will be making) it would of course be a lot easier and cheaper as all it is is some box section welded up to form a modular chassis and wood to cover the sides. But to make a real functioning one you would need to buy some sort of old jeep that you can take the chassis from and fold out some sheet metal parts for the body. Believe it or not the hardest part on that would possibly be the tyres because of how huge they are mostly. Would love to have funds to actually make one of these, but even if i did, where would i put it?
Good Luck man the world will always need more talented welders.
dad says I can earn some really great money if I learn to weld chassises properly. a rusty chassis is what sends like 80% of cars to their scrapyard death
I didn't do much welding on these, but this is mainly what I make: The one on the top fires a .75 cal ball. The one on the bottom fires a 25mm ball, or three .457 cal buckshot. It's also 6 feet long and weighs 26 and a half pounds. Most of the welding was done while making the barrel bands. I also have my own system for attaching the pans, so they have a long tang which is welded on.
My dad has been welding for over 20 years, started before i was born actually. Doesn't do full time welding anymore, he was fed up with it, now he just tacks parts together according to the drawings but that has much more responsibility then just welding parts together.
dad says I can earn some really great money if I learn to weld chassises properly. a rusty chassis is what sends like 80% of cars to their scrapyard death
But chassis wont rust because of a bad weld. It will rust because it is not protected against corrosion very well. I would say a good weld is much more important in parts that need to be airtight like hydraulic and fuel tanks of heavy machinery and such. You were the same guy who made a kukri too right?
Welding would also help me with my homemade death car idea...

I am going for the grand prize at NTNU for civil engineering, so all that I need to do (alot) is to study for 3 years, maybe 2 more in "folk" as it says in google translate. (folk high school or something) and then 5 years for a master degree(not sure what its called) [editline]16th January 2011[/editline]
Actaully this looks like a very doable project with the right funding. If I could have 1 wish made true, I would lead a group of elite anti-riot elites dressed in combine suits armed with mp7s. We would also have a combine apc like that, and a hunter chopper. Sounds like fun..
stick welding sucks compared to wire
Yeah I want to take a class to learn how to weld. It makes you feel manly. Just remember to wear protective clothing and eyewear, and welding makes a bunch of UV.
Is it bad that when I read this thread title I immediately thought "It's CLOSING TIME!"
I wish I'd been taught how to weld because now I find myself wanting to learn so that I can build a pc chassis from scratch and because I've got a general intrest in metalwork anyway. It's a shame I have no idea which type of welder to buy nor really the money to buy a £200+ one.
stick welding sucks compared to wire
Agreee 1000%
stick welding sucks compared to wire
Judging by the post you made, I guess you cant do much on stick or just suck at it.

I can only use Easy Weld :frown:
Nice to see other welders. Currently signed up for some Stick and Oxy-Fuel welding classes this semester. I personally can't stand stick, but I've been putting it off for so long - mainly due to me preferring to dig around in the scrap bin and make sculptures out of the shit. MIG is where it's at, and I wouldn't mind trying TIG in the near future. My most entertaining project was probably this hugeass dragon that gave me my first, and only, major burn. Most serious project was building a motorcycle trailer as a class project, and now a fire pit cover for my cousin.
all of this talk of welding classes reminds me of the kid that cut off two fingers in shop back in my freshman year :allears:

I tend to enjoy stick welding and other sorts.
I love welding and metalworking, I even showed people how to weld in my how-to speech. Speaking of that, I gotta start working on my Sterling SMG, I was supposed to finish that last summer.
