Facts do nothing to quell irrational fear. I don't even like standing next to the acetylene tanks because I'm afraid they're going to blow up
I can kind of understand that, acetylene is the kind of gas that likes to go off on its own if the pressure reaches 30psi out of a cylinder and there you are standing next to 250psi of the stuff. (In acetone to keep it inert but still) But they're extremely safe, I've dropped them before and they were good to go after letting them stand upright for a few hours. They make those new style tanks with the regulator built in now, which are even safer.
Metal working is one of my passions. MIG, TIG, arc, Oxy.-ace., casting, I can do most everything. I've heard stories and seen videos of some pretty horrific accidents.
The only reason why most schools don't have welding is because, It's expensive for various reasons: A) Metal...Yes, that shit is VERY expensive....depending on what your getting, but, its still expensive. B) Electrodes and/or Wire feeders....Stuff isn't made of your regular crap. C) Gas....Self explained... D) The Welding Machines....Last semester at my school, we spent over 3000 just to fix, a DS, TiG, and MiG machine.....Stuff isnt really cheap... So, some of us are lucky to acquire this trait of epertise, yes, its a VERY good trait to have, like kontra said, you can make bank as a underwater welder. But look at the shit they have to deal with, Explosive's on their back, how deep, what you have to do, and etc. Right now this week, I'm beginning brazing on small tubes, I figured I could braze gun since I live in southern IL. and someone can break a gun and I could braze it back to a functional way...for a price.
The spotwelder at college is fucking terrifying. It was my first time welding and I was constructing a cage out steel wire. It's some huge machine that was obviously designed for giants, as the foot pedal is around 10cm too high, even for gangly 6'2" me. Then when you stand on it, it starts humming menacingly. I was working on a pretty small scale so my hands were right in close to the thing. To top it all off, turns out some dickheads had been welding zinc coated wire before I used it, so every time a weld was made it popped and cracked, sending huge sparks everywhere. I hope ordinary welding is better than that.

Common sense is really needed in welding...
Post some pics! this is a wip thread :P
for those curious, this is a 1969 camaro ss this was my first patch ever: ^that thingy is a plasma cutter, it's kinda fun and i love using it. also note the warning near the tip :v: here, the toe board and most of the inner rocker panel are all new metal: the welds in the middle of the toe board were done with a "spot welder" or something, it has two long copper arms that pinches the metal and you press a button and it makes a weld. ill find some more i've done a lot more welding than that. those pictures were taken 1-2 months ago. here's some up close pictures of the welds on the toe board, I think my dad did these but i honestly can't remember. this was before we ground them down. heres the front of the toe board: sloppy, but EH here, you can see the car as a whole: you can also see the welder and plasma cutter on the cart (that we made). there is also a patch on the door that we'll probably have to re-do (dad's first time welding) I haven't taken any pictures in about 2 weeks, I might go out later and grab some. we've got the floor in, and the trunk and two frame rails have been cut out, and i've welded some patches onto the rear wheel wells, and I think I did ok. this is the garage in which i do all my work, also you can see the camaro before i really started on the restoration.
Mind taking a picture of the ones on the rear wheel wells, I'm trying to get hold of the pictures I did on titanium....(Yes, I've welded on titan., and It was at a USMC base)

Yeah, I'm not sure if i'll get those pics now, I was just told by my brother they added another layer of titan. on it and he cant find the pictures he took of me welding...... I feel like a fool :(

The next day though, my dad decided that one part wasn't ground down enough, so he tried to grind it some more. he ended up making the thinnest metal i've ever seen. I tried to put some copper behind it and throw weld at it, but it was no use. (it's okay though i'll just cut that bit out and patch it later (:) heres the outer rocker panel on the drivers side: weld is at the top part of the black metal, dad did this one. heres the poopy weld on the passenger door i mentioned earlier: neither me nor my dad are professionals hahaha

Is that garage at your home?
Your putting to much heat into the weld, but, who knows, I've only done titan., and steel at my place.....I think I ran a TiG bead on a car's engine once...It's been forever since I went to the shop and it was just last week T_T
Good stuff man! Is that garage at your home?
yep! dad had it built about 6 years ago. Dont be afraid of changing it, just because it works and etc, doesn't mean its the proper way of welding it. If thats Al. and you start getting brown marks when your TiG'ing it or w/e, then your running to hot and congrats, you got yourself a hole in the metal.. I haven't MiG'd Al. But, I'm pretty sure you get the same result's as TiG'ing.. But yeah, play around with your settings on some scrap metal and look at the weld when your done with it.
I'd be worried if I dropped a tank regardless of whether not it has new safety features on it. (It was one of the old style tanks but thankfully I was smart enough to put the cap on before moving it) I just let everyone know that it had just dropped and that they shouldn't use it for the day.

But, Good job on letting people know you shouldn't use tanks when fallen over.
Dang if i had that garage id be in heaven! haha
It is pretty nice, I feel happy every time i step foot into it.

Does anybody know what a MFLB is? Otherwise known as the mystical Magic Flight Launch Box. magic-flight.com, see, the screen ripped from the side. How would I go about welding this little fucker back together? I know about the lifetime warranty my buddy just got a new one and gave me the broken one. Which is why I want to fix it. Cause i wan' get high.

Go to the DD sub thread and ask them....We'll continue discussing more important things that would help us off in life instead of a box of wood.
i always wanted to weld but i'm too poor to afford it
for those curious, this is a 1969 camaro ss
I am very jealous.
Anyone been experimenting with acetylene bombs? Find a pipe with the bottom clogged up with a rag/cloth, let acetylene flow in the pipe, produce sparks with a welding lighter so the sparks touch the acetylene in the pipe, kaboom. I don't recommend you to mix h2o and acetylene together, that's a bit more precarious. I hate MiG, the sticks always get stuck in the piece of metal I'm working with, and TiG is just boring, gas welding is my favourite because you can melt shit.

A little bit of practice and it won't stick to it anymore. Even with a cheap mig and a few hours of practice you can make some decent strength reasonably neat welds. Without that it would just blow holes in it :(
Not too into welding in particular, but I would like to make a bloom furnance at some point and try iron casting, I guess that is a form of metal work. I don't know why it interests me but it looks very satisfying.
Welding is probably the only thing like this I haven't done. I'm too scared of electricity to try it.
Same here.. Mostly cause my class mate had a electric pen which shocks you when you use it.

Finally got a scale model of the republic fighter tank, will start making chassis tonight. Chassis will be made of 16x16mm square box and it will be covered in 10mm plywood, it will be a modular design so the sides come off and the top is made of 3 pieces. Also door will be functional to allow it opening and it will have steps built to regulations with a handrail for people to get inside it and take pictures on the top cannon. It will be 2.4 meters high, 4.5 meters wide and 7.2 meters long. I will unfortunietely not be making any detail, these will be hand made after I design the basic shape of the ship. Still going to be quite fun to work on. [editline]18th January 2011[/editline] here is a picture of what model i will be working from. Ofcourse it will be much more detailed than a toy.
Depending on what stick your using and what current (AC / DC) and how thick the metal was and or what the metal is, make sure you ask your teacher for a MSDS next time or whomever. [MSDS - Material Specification Data Sheet] But yeah, what kontra said, Make sure you play around with your settings until your comfortable with it and make sure you move at a steady pace so you dont continue burning the holes in metal. What grade you in as well kontra (curious as well)
that was just with a friend, i left school years ago [editline]18th January 2011[/editline]
yep! dad had it built about 6 years ago. !
you cunt i'd literally wank off your whole family for that garage. how much did the lifts set you back?
