I'm about as athiest as you can get but to claim that religion has no positive effects, you're just being blind. Do they outweigh the negative effects? Not a chance, but they exist.

I'd rather use quantitative data than some extremely vague concept. Perhaps we could go with a strict qualification for what exactly qualifies a scientific achievement, and then simply put a number in? That graph is just as bad as the "evidence" that religious zealots use - information from a biased source (in their case, the bible) without any backup data or actual quantitative qualification.

I prefer something that doesn't make me look like a prick to my opponent. Something that shows you're serious. "Nobelief.com" doesn't show that. I guarantee if you were at a formal debate and pulled out that graph you'd get laughed off the podium.

And religion isn't required in [I]modern[/I] society for any actual development, but it was actually critical for pre-civilization development. It served as the basis for laws and centralized governments. Civilization was born from religion, just because we don't need it any longer doesn't mean it never served a purpose.

That wasn't caused by Christianity itself, rather it was caused by the fall of the Roman Empire. Sure Christianity(Roman Catholicism in particular) held it's role of holding it back, but that isn't necessarily caused by religion. It could have just as easily been caused by the state of affairs of Europe during that period. Notice that the graph only applies to Europe. The Middle East was doing very well technologically and the empires and nations there were extremely religious(just as radical as the Catholic Church during that time).

the decline wasn't caused by it alone, but it was a fairly substantial factor. It was more due to the fall of the roman empire, but the era of hostility created by the warring churches didn't help, nor did the notorious reputation of the church either ex communicating or executing major scientists and physicists of the time
