"That celestial pisshole in the sand." Great. :D
I'm not atheist but I enjoyed this video quite a bit. He is right about this stuff. I'm not going to defend religion, I know its messed up. :P
Lol, I find atheism funny, always thinking their badass.
I think you're funny, believing in fairy tales and talking about them out loud to people.
Guy seems like a total douche tbh. Stereotyping religious people makes him as bad as the worst of them.
<---Joined his facebook group.
He would be alright if he didn't come off as such a hypocrite.
that's fucking stupid if he believes in his own religion he is not an atheist
athiest is "without theism"
without religion
He either walked off because he was stupid and didn't realize this, or thought you were being a little close-minded self righteous twat
To be an atheist is to reject any belief in a god or mythology, and he rejected any belief in those gods/goddesses etc. Therefore he's partially an atheist.

our beliefs so fuck off
What the FUCK? He's my friend, and they were trying to convert him from an atheist aggressively. It looked like they were getting violent in their approach by the minute. Why WOULDN'T I intervene?
i wish all religion was banned and made illegal

No, it's not.
For fucks sake the latin root of the word means without religion. it's derived from atheos
a = without
theos = theology
theology = religion
if you're atheist you have no religion, it's not in reference to any specific religion. You can't say "I'm atheist to scientology"
are you intentionally being stupid or are you just trying to defend your ego without thinking
I'd rather use quantitative data than some extremely vague concept. Perhaps we could go with a strict qualification for what exactly qualifies a scientific achievement, and then simply put a number in? That graph is just as bad as the "evidence" that religious zealots use - information from a biased source (in their case, the bible) without any backup data or actual quantitative qualification.
I prefer something that doesn't make me look like a prick to my opponent. Something that shows you're serious. "Nobelief.com" doesn't show that. I guarantee if you were at a formal debate and pulled out that graph you'd get laughed off the podium.
And religion isn't required in modern society for any actual development, but it was actually critical for pre-civilization development. It served as the basis for laws and centralized governments. Civilization was born from religion, just because we don't need it any longer doesn't mean it never served a purpose.
Yeah but anything could have served as the basis for laws and centralized governments, only they managed to pick the most poisonous one. Anyway the y axis still makes sense if you compare what was before Ancient Egypt to today. This isn't a formal debate so there's no reason to be so picky about a graph that's most likely a joke.
That guy is a badass.

Also pretty much anything positive can be replaced with "scientific advancement" and it will still make sense.

you're a scrawny dude
there's a big dude with a club that wants to kill you and fuck your wife
there is no law, no government, only anarchy. No groups, no morals, do whatever the fuck you want. How are you going to stop him from crushing your skull in and fucking your wife hard? Religion served as a way for the weak to balance themselves with the physically strong. As asinine as it sounds, religion created the foundation for science. It changed the perspective - no longer was it "biggest motherfucker gets what he wants" it shifted the focus to creation of a community through mutual fear of damnnation. That community created the basic civilization, and that focusing away from the physically strong to the mentally strong gave intellectuals an edge that they would use to create governments, laws, and essentially grab the brutes by the balls without fear of getting killed.
sure there may have been other ways but I strongly doubt any would be as efficient as changing the actual moral values of our species from survival to "spiritual enlightenment" which had some positive side effects such as an increased focus on the family and community and mutual well being
it just stayed around too long and is now obsolete

Well you see you can't have a wife in the first place because there is no laws, government, anarchy, groups, morals, or whatever the fuck I want to allow having a wife. It wasn't just religion that allowed all of that just how it wasn't the only thing that allowed the Dark Ages. Basic civilization formed with only unorganized beliefs in generic spirits so it's not like religion was there from the start anyway.

wife/girl you're fucking whatever I just added that in
Basic civilization formed with only unorganized beliefs in generic spirits so it's not like religion was there from the start anyway.
belief in a spirit is a theology
There wouldn't be that mutual fear of damnation because the entire concept was created to scare people into staying in the religion. The first beliefs were random and unorganized and could have been anything, so it wasn't like that formed an organized society, which showed up anyway at the same time. Society didn't create itself because lower people didn't like the strong ruling over them because that's what happened in organized society anyway. It formed because the best way to survive would be to become sedentary.
Religion was born when some idiot was talking about shit he knew absolutely nothing about but people still believed him because he was an authority.
This guy brings up stupid points, he also complains about the fight for oil as something to do with religion, well ye he's right because religion is why we need oil because religion is what made us what we are today yet he sais it dumbs down science. That's rubbish, and religion brought on hygiene as the saying goes "Cleanliness is godliness" and hygiene led to better health and like Einstein said, both religion in science need each other for instance religion led us to hygiene and science led us to better health care and such, so atheist accusing religion of dumbing down science or holding it back are just plain stupid because it drives it forwards.
Yea it's not like Galileo was thrown into jail by the pope for suggesting the sun was at the center of the solar system.
If religious organizations want to cling to their traditions regardless then it's not your problem. Judgmental people will eventually fail in their pursuits regardless of motive or what they are biased about. They're like real-life trolls. If you stop acknowledging how much of a dick that particular organization (not particularly the people that believe in its ideals), they'll eventually run out of reasons to fight and die off.
What? No they won't. By that logic religion shouldn't exist now, as no one was fighting it in the dark ages.

There are religions without gods. Atheists can follow these religions and still be an atheist.
Now who's making our side look stupid?
While I am not a religious man (Universalist agnostic, I suppose), I believe common courtesy and respect to all beliefs should be held, setting by example rather than fighting fire with fire

Even though I'm atheist that chart is a bit biased.
There are religions without gods. Atheists can follow these religions and still be an atheist.

Webster defines theology as "the study of religious faith, practice, and experience; especially: The study of god and god's relation to the world"
theology is a broad term that also refers to religions without deities
try again

While the chart is bullshit, the idea behind it is not. The dark ages left a massive hole in our scientific development. Of course you can't measure it, but it's definitely there.
That's biased bullshit made by atheist, how bout you look at the massive gap that's happening during these ages where there are loads of atheist thinking they are better than everyone else simply because they use the internet alot.

you know that not all scientists are atheists right
nor are all engineers
to attribute scientific advancement only to atheists is dumb. the christies helped too
I don't think fergason or whatever his name was was an outspoken atheist either
