WolfMother blow
I have an irrational hatred of Dream Theater.
I blame my brother.
Wow, like not even the most indie developers with some EU-backed money would have come up with more generic and boring looking "characters"

What the fuck is dream theater even, that just seems so tryhard it's on another level

precisely that, but the ridiculousness to the point of seeming like a self-parody is a part of the charm for me, makes their music extra fun, like how you enjoy bad acting in a b-shlock movie
dream theater is okay but i don't have the concentration-span to listen to them
they just can't hold my interest with their super long tracks that mostly lack hooks, they also aren't very catchy (in a fun way)
3 minutes is the longest a track can hold my attention with proper hooks and fun catchy parts
just nabbed a ticket to see hecker should b good
got spotify
p solid so far
I was a huge DT fan until DTOE. Now they're just super boring IMO.
Also, at a Queensryche concert atm. Starts in about 30 minutes. Opening band is Halcyon Way who I've never heard of.
listening to this right now and it's fantastic
i was pretty skeptical when i heard tim's pretentious description of how it would sound but i'm really loving this a lot so far
sounds like opn has been rubbing off on him (unsurprisingly)
Man, people have been hating that description left and right!
I respect how people feel though. Conveying a concept through such an abstract medium such as music can often prove to be incredibly alienating - especially if the author is attempting to explain the concept in only a few sentences.
I think it's a damn shame people through around the word "pretentious" without the elaboration as to why one would want to apply such a label. I'm quite fond of Hecker trying to explain his work through a language relating to "aesthetics", beauty, and conceptualization regarding art. At the very least, it's refreshing to see that he takes his music seriously and is genuinely trying to convey his themes and ideas in a language that goes deeper than the superficial.
With regards to OPN, I am hearing a nice touch of plunder-phonics [?] on this album.
Probably my second or third favorite Hecker release as of right now. Virgins keeps the crown.
I'm really loving the hell out of the new Tim Hecker. Some of the vocal stuff in it reminds me of how Jóhann Jóhannsson does vocals.
Hecker is so god damn foward-thinking too. From my experience, the dominant idea is that Hecker is in untouched territory in his genre with only a few others coming close (Yellow Swans, Early Fennesz, maybe OPN and Arca).
Probably one of the most "innovative" albums I've heard in a while.
The only one who comes close to Tim Hecker is Roly Porter.
[editline]28th January 2016[/editline]
Who also just released a new album, which is super good.

Who is this Roly Porter and where do I start with him?
With regards to what I like with Hecker: Virgins, Ravedeath 1972, and Love Streams are my favorites if that is anything to go off of.

I would start with his first album, 'Aftertime'.

Much appreciated!
I like it already.
i saw roly porter live too.. my brainz were totally destroyed
Speaking of DT, one of the openers for Queensryche was Meytal and they played a cover of Pull Me Under. It was on point as fuck and sounded great.
okay is there somewhere I can stream Def Leppard without having to buy an album? They don't have any of their music on Spotify or any streaming services besides Pandora (which keeps playing Poison and Guns 'n Roses instead of actual Def Leppard). I have over two weeks until my paycheck and I don't have enough cash to buy an album and I just want to listen to Def Leppard
do you not use torrents?
illegal
I'm not comfortable using "means of questionable legality" since I'm on my University's network. I'm worried I'll fuck it up and get a nasty letter from them

i still enjoyed DToE, not as much as the previous albums but it was alright
their s/t was absolutely dreadful though, there are 2 okay songs but it's all ruined by the awful brickwalled mixing
the astonishing is pretty 50/50 in that regard, there are a lot of fun tracks and then a LOT of boring tracks
they've definitely had a drop in quality since Portnoy left, and tho i still enjoy their new stuff to some extent, i totally understand where you stand on it

did they include that awful "ending" of the song where it just stops suddenly halfway through a riff
all this discussion about dream theatre makes me feel like i need a shower
what's some good stuff that sounds like buckethead's colma & electric tears? spotify playlist radio is completely useless in this case

wolfmother
wolfmother
nah that's not even close, people screaming and overdrive guitars isn't at all related
Are there any fans of Nightwish here? They're one of my favourite bands! :)
why aren't you talking about the REAL album of the year that got leaked: Dream Theater's new 2-hour rock opera The Astonishing, including 8 characters and a world map
also it's like 50% really bland boring ballads, there's parts on both the CDs that are just 4 ballads in a row
it's mediocre by Dream Theater standards but still better than the garbage that was their s/t 3 years ago
plus it has a song called "Losing Faythe" and a character named "Lord Nafaryus", it gets plenty points on ridiculousness already
this is the best song on the album cause it's the only one where it actually sounds like they're having fun

I feel like after Octovarium their style kinda... stopped? Like I feel they used to experiment more or had more variety in their older stuff. Most of their newer albums just kinda sound the same.
[editline]29th January 2016[/editline]
every now and a gain I go back and listen to them and it's pretty rad, Metropolis pt 2 will always be their best album imo

they started going for a much more commercial sound with systematic chaos and black clouds, which i assume is what portnoy got tired of and why he wanted DT to take a break
both albums still had that fun prog feel to them and systematic chaos has In the Presence of Enemies, which is great, but it started getting obvious they really wanted more mainstream appeal with songs like Constant Motion
it was never as bad as it got with their s/t though
