So I got a bit of a problem here. I have a lot of music files that I've been accruing for a few years. Previously, I just threw them in a folder, making a new folder arbitrarily when I felt the current one was getting too full. Over the years though, this adds up to quite a bit of songs, with no organizational scheme. None of them have any metadata, most of them have only either the artist name, album name, or song title in the filename, with no form of distinction between which it is. Currently the only thing identifying them is the date when I acquired the file. So my question is, how to sort a music library? It would be nice if I could actually find the song I'm looking for. Is there a program that can scan a sound file and determine the genre or something?
Nothing in the scale you're looking at. You're going to have to do it the hard way by using data dump sites like last.fm or RateYourMusic to organise the data. Probably have to youtube full albums and compare files with songs if you lack most of the data itself.

I obsessively keep my mp3s in order, and at one point I decided to go back and change every "feat." to "ft." to shorten names. Took me almost every evening for a good few weeks and I'm still finding tracks with "feat."
It's actually confusing, how can you get so many files without the 3 basics of artist, album, song? I'm up to around 200gigs of music and am yet to get files without the basic 3.

Have a music folder. Sort by artist. Sort by album release date. Sort by song order. The 3 main bits of data you need on a file are the Artist, Album and Song Title. You can also use genre if you're a stickler and song number is also helpful for automatic sorting, but you need to use double digit format eg. 02, 08, etc. What music player do you use? Because delete it and get foobar.
I mostly just use vlc, I'll look into foobar.

Who has listened to the new Drake album? It's not bad, I just got finished listening to it. I dig "Know Yourself". I usually don't listen through Drake albums, especially if I am just at my desk doing homework. I like to hear Drake out of context (I don't know if that's the right phrase), like at a party, while driving, or when I am chillin' with the homies. I will probably grow more fond of the album as it begins to circulate among my peers.
Okay, how about this: Anyone got any music similar to this http://soundcloud.com/gurlz/eat-with-them-pigs-boy It's fantastic, it's the standout voice that makes it.
they're still kinda relevant, Mike G and Domo dropped albums, not to mention earl is writing the next album [editline]12th February 2015[/editline] although Yonkers references are still dumb because goblin is kinda shitty and the bandwagon era of Odd Future was trash in general
they're relevant among people who aren't big into music ie not to anyone here. [editline]13th February 2015[/editline]
well you gotta [editline]12th February 2015[/editline] anyone who gets a tattoo because of a trend is not really a forward thinking individual. Unless they're trashed on drink and drugs when they decide to get it. [editline]12th February 2015[/editline] really getting into my music review tumbrl guys its helped me a lot through my mental health issues. its p good i recommend you all doing it because i just listen to different shit all the time now.
I'm pretty much always trashed so any bad decision I make will be called forward thinking thanks to you
That's the thing though, how do I file it correctly? I have no idea what I should be sorting stuff by.
Music folder. Artist folders inside Music folder. "Year - Album Title" folders inside Artist folders. "01 Song Name" inside "Year - Album Title" folders. I'm also a heretic because I use iTunes. The only reason I haven't switched somewhere else is because I'm super accustomed to using Get Info to edit metadata and the keyboard shortcuts in iTunes take me maybe a minute or two to adjust an album to have everything I want. I sort by genre somewhat, but I have a lot of genre-fusion music and various indie bands that don't easily fall into a genre. I just use it to separate Rap & Hip-Hop from Electronic and Rock and Indie. I'll add composers to hip-hop, because I like being able to find songs by a specific composer/producer (e.g. Clams Casino or Mike Will or something). Good luck, because organizing a giant folder filled with loose mp3s will take an insanely long amount of time. He only released it as a full album instead of a mixtape because of the whole Lil Wayne/Birdman drama going on - he's now fulfilled his contract with Cash Money records (4 albums), so he's free to release Views From The 6 independently or on whatever label Lil Wayne decides to make. It's actually fucking genius what he's done - his contract gave him publishing rights, so he released this album to get out of his contract and jump ship with Wayne. The title gives that away - by the time Birdman reads it, there's nothing he can do to keep Drake on board. If Drake releases Views From The 6 independently through OVO, he'd be the biggest independent artist in history.

new drake album/mixtape whatever is pretty solid, nowhere near the level of Take Care or NWTS, and it definitely feels more like a mixtape than a real album. Less polished than his usual stuff. Still gonna enjoy it for a while, just want VFT6 to hurry up. He's projected to sell 500k first week, which is insane for such a low-publicity, digital-only album. It seems like Beyonce's and Kanye's "ultra short marketing run" schtick is going to become more popular. You avoid leaks, hype goes through the roof, and people are more inclined to impulse-buy to get it ASAP rather than take the time to go find a link to download it.
I've been having so much trouble picking chords and making melodies from them. Whenever I ask for help people just say it should come naturally. I feel like I should just give up because nothing happens ever.
Holy fuck I tried tried ableton for the first time and it is awful for anything other than live shows. So many steps to do the simplest thing.
Ever since I've started using pro tools its very hard to try any other daw. I used abelton once, felt pretty clunky.

I feel like I should just give up because nothing happens ever.
naww dude never give up in my experience all the best ideas for chord progressions come from looking at charts for jazz standards. you might not give two fucks about hella old jazz, i don't know what your tastes are like but just peep this for a second. look at the chord progression, it modulates around like a motherfucker. i mean it always resolves to the key of Bb but it takes some detours getting there*. now look at the melody. except for two notes the entire thing is inside the key of Bb. It's really simple and yet it sounds really pretty over the chords. i have a feeling victor young started with the melody and then harmonised it afterwards by branching off each chord in a different way, kind of like taking a colouring book and drawing over the lines rather than in them but in a way that is complimentary rather than destructive. that's why i reckon it sounds good anyway. this probably sounds like jazz school wanker shit but really you can use these kinds of techniques to compose in any style (cause fuck it, it's the 21st century everything is basically jazz now anyway). i hope some of it makes sense cause i am p.fucking tired. good luck dude. *look at how good composers always resist the resolution or cadence. resolving the chord progression is like busting a nut, you don't wanna do it too early on.
thanks franke for my sick new avatar <3

BRAND NEW FUCKING MODEST MOUSE SONG They're on Reddit right now doing an unofficial AMA type thing I think. They released it there. It's on iTunes at midnight or something. I'm freaking out. They just released a single a week ago, and two other singles were released in the past few months. This new album is going to be fantastic and I can't fucking wait. Also [t]http://i.imgur.com/DCOs2aS.jpg[/t]
Honestly, none of these singles have me too excited for the new album. Most of their material after The Moon and Antarctica lacks the raw emotion that got me to love them in the first place.

I can just feel the power in Isaac's voice in some of those songs. I didn't get a tattoo of the anchor balloon just because it looked neat. Lonesome Crowded West is incredible and I can totally agree that they had more raw emotion back then though.
