it's not though, independent music can be any genre, rock can just be, well, rock
yeah, i used to hate when people used "indie" when the artist wasn't actually independent, but I picked it up a while back and I use it a bunch now.
it's become less a term meaning "independent" and more a musical style imo. most people wouldn't consider macklemore "indie rap" by any stretch of the imagination.
really, "indie" is just the new "alternative," in that it's a tenuously-defined genre that is sort of a catch-all term for a certain broad style of music
i like every genre except country and rap
i know so many people who say this and I just want to play them some krautrock or drone music or k-pop or some other polarizing genre so that they'll reconsider that statement
Gotta agree on the screaming metal. It's a shame because the composition can be REALLY good, only to be ruined by the dumbest vocals.
Listen to post-metal or heavier post-rock. I'm not a big fan of screaming vocals, either. Some bands pull it off and I don't mind it too much, but the real "heavier" stuff in metal genres is too much for me. I fucking loooove the composition, so listening to instrumental albums helps me get that fix without the vocals.
genres really don't matter
there is good music and there is bad music, simple as that.
how could you possibly think genres are entirely useless
[editline]23rd February 2015[/editline]
obviously classification can and will be taken too far but it's not entirely useless at all
Unrelated, but my friends now ex girlfriend insists that music without lyrics aren't considered songs, which just doesn't make the slightest bit of sense
Unrelated, but my friends now ex girlfriend insists that music without lyrics aren't considered songs, which just doesn't make the slightest bit of sense
my dad says that music isn't music unless there's singing as an excuse to call rap "not actually music"
but somehow jazz and classical are music
Yeah I'm tempted to show her like, pulse demon and argue fervently that it is music until I get accused of being autistic again

Maybe she meant the literal dictionary definition of "song"?
Maybe she meant the literal dictionary definition of "song"?
idk she listens to 9 songs on repeat for 12 hours shifts so I am somewhat inclined to discard her opinion!
i dunno man music comes in all forms but a "song" is a pretty specific thing
"hey man what kinda music do you like"
"good music"
So who's your favorite aleatoric composer
genres really don't matter

Saying you like "good music" just makes an incredibly subjective statement that could mean anything from "I like Coldplay" to "I like Merzbow." If someone asks you what you like then it makes a lot more sense to say you like indie rock if you like a lot of indie rock. Sure, that does leave plenty unsaid, but the other person at least gets a vague idea of what you enjoy.
Recognizing genres is also helpful when you're actively searching something out in a specific style.
Stop arguing about genres and go listen to Steven Wilson's newest release. It's fucking awesome.
