Spotify just removed Portugal The Man's album The Satanic Satanist, but kept everything else by PtM up.
Fuck Spotify, this shit happens all the time.
What's better than Spotify that I can switch to?
Rdio is good
You know what gets me mad
People who think EDM = club bangers
I listen to EDM and sure I listen to dubstep and stuff, but there are always some idiots who are like ''oh EDM? enjoy dem sik wubz m8? d(-.-)b lol listen to pink floyd or somethin''
Yeah man look at me raving to this and this
That's because EDM is mostly trash and is also the worst umbrella term right after "indie".
That's because EDM is mostly trash and is also the worst umbrella term right after "indie".
what??
No literally what are you even trying to say
something stupid.
Saying EDM is bad umbrella term is like saying metal is a bad umbrella term
[editline]17th May 2015[/editline]
whoa merge
EDM is a bad umbrella term though, that liquid strange track (which to be fair, is quite nice) is more like downtempo ambient stuff, I wouldn't really class it as EDM, likewise this, which is based on footwork, a type of chicago dance, would therefore be classed as EDM, but you'd sound like a tit for calling it that

EDM basically refers to various subgenres of house at this point all the guys in the UK who talk about it go on about ketamine and steve aoki
[editline]17th May 2015[/editline]
It's simultaneously very narrow and incredibly diffuse
EDM is basically the new word for electronic music, it just generally means ''new electronic music'' instead of ''dance music''
It's not meant to be taken literally. Sounds stupid but yeah. And technically that Liquid Stranger track is psychill which is one of many many EDM subgenres :v:
But thats probably because I listen to EDM so it might have a different definition for me than for people who don't listen to it at all
EDM is in the same boat as indie when you're trying to use it as a description. It's literally useless and doesn't really say anything.
I guess I was right with this then:
But thats probably because I listen to EDM so it might have a different definition for me than for people who don't listen to it at all
because EDM for me refers to all the modern stuff (house, trap, dubstep, drum & bass, chill etc) while electronica/electronic refers to more older stuff (don't really know any examples atm)
But yeah as a description it's a bit useless, it's more of a ''hey I listen to EDM'' and not ''I love EDM'' if that makes sense
I reject 'electronic' as an umbrella term because it doesn't really mean anything, I don't understand the meaning of EDM as a term to categorise everything because it just seems so sloppy and all-encompassing, I listen to some stuff that would be classed as EDM but I completely reject the term
[editline]17th May 2015[/editline]
'electronic' as an umbrella term is just as stupid as 'guitar' as an umbrella term imo
I guess I was right with this then:

yea but if you're going to go with that, why use the term in a place where you're not sure if people listen to the same stuff you do?
also house and dnb are pretty old school electronic genres.
I get where you're coming from and I don't disagree, it's just hard for me to explain.
I guess it's like saying that you love music with guitars. You're just saying you like music that use that 'instrument' (or electronic in EDM's case).
EDM was probably invented because ~tha youth~ didnt think Electronica sounded hip enough
[editline]17th May 2015[/editline]
That was referring to Uzbekistan but it applies to both so whatever :v:

I genuinely don't ever think I've heard someone over the age of 15 say 'I love guitar music' if I'm gonna be honest with you
I guess it's just easier than saying ''I listen to [shitloads of genres that the majority of which people may not even know]''

no it used to refer to music people danced to, or at least could dance to. bass or beat fronted music like hardstyle/trance/techno/etc was generally what it described.

you're on a music sub, most people DO know of genres, they just don't know of bands of that specific type.
no it used to refer to music people danced to, or at least could dance to. bass or beat fronted music like hardstyle/trance/techno/etc was generally what it described.

Yea but nowadays chillstep for example is 'EDM' as well and I frankly don't see anyone dancing to that :v:
you're on a music sub, most people DO know of genres, they just don't know of bands of that specific type.
I know, I was talking more like in real life where if I said ''hey I like psytrance and deathstep'' people would look at me funny
And it's not a sub anymore :(
But I think i'm going to stop the discussion here because I think we kind of are on the same track, it's just me and English aren't cooperating today.
So can anyone recommend me some ambient psychill stuff? Because that shit is great when you're lying in bed. I already listen to Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar Fields, Liquid Stranger's old stuff and some psydub artists like Third Ear Audio, Globular, Radioactive Sandwich and Slackbaba but I want more :v:
[editline]17th May 2015[/editline]
Also if anyone here is slightly confused on what psydub is, it's like this:

A bit of ambient/chill stuff but slightly faster paced and with a prominent bassline
This thread is really reminding me how bad I am at actually describing genres
Yea but nowadays chillstep for example is 'EDM' as well and I frankly don't see anyone dancing to that :v:
Hence me saying it's a useless term now. It's been bastardised in the same manner indie was.
genre name

since when is house and d&b modern electronic music those are both like techno old
[editline]17th May 2015[/editline]
and in the words of the almighty eminem, "you're too old, let go, it's over, nobody listens to techno"

Modern d&b and sound very different now. Hell modern House could almost be a new subgenre at this point
I genuinely don't ever think I've heard someone over the age of 15 say 'I love guitar music' if I'm gonna be honest with you
Specific types of Manc say that TBH, usually the ones sucking Noel Gallaghers dick

It's really useful because I rather tag a lot of music as electronic rather than try to tag a lot of music based on nuances. If I was actually recommending music to someone I'd go into further description than just saying "they're an electronic group."
bands are rarely just one genre anyway. not if they're good. its better to describe their music than to classify it i think.
my favourite is the tinkly soft crescendo-core stuff that is just labelled post-rock.
my fav genre is crabgaze
boris' new 3 albums can now be ordered from the inoxia records site, limited to 1000 copies each
http://inoxia-rec.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=103&language=en
hopefully i'll be able to listen to them soon, i'm really excited to hear they're very experimental releases as opposed to the poppier, rockier style they've been doing recently
my fav genre is crabgaze
crabgazecore
Ca5bah is there a reason you rated all my posts dumb? Did I hurt your feelings orrrr
