making drone/dark ambient/minimalism interesting isn't hard tho

alternatively just make it so fucking good you don't need any variation at all
When youhave 400 albums, a large majority are going to suck.

Especially when it's drone or some minimalistic genre.

yea but like instead maybe just have some restraint and only release the stuff that doesn't suck like what almost all artists do
i found bull of heaven to be very inspiring and have been doing some of my own experimental garbage, exploring genres i've never tried writing for before etc
well except making the music listenable by human standards instead of just one note for 5 hours
I've tried to listen to drone multiple times and it just feels like the soundtrack to a nightmare and it just makes me feel anxious and awful. I get more enjoyment listening to binaural beats - even though they're repetitive, they at least have a rhythm and varied background ambience. The drone I've listened to has just been prolonged hanging notes. It's just post-rock slowed down about ten thousand times. I can't enjoy it and I can't even see why anyone would ever want to listen to it. It's the only genre I honest to god cannot understand the appeal of.
It's the only genre I honest to god cannot understand the appeal of.
but you already said one reason
it just feels like the soundtrack to a nightmare and it just makes me feel anxious
personally i like drone because its main focus is on atmosphere, which is what i most appreciate in music
drone can be dark and brooding or light and hopeful, it's a surprisingly varied genre
like are these really anxious and scary to you?

i mean yeah there's really nightmarish and anxious drone like this as well

but saying all drone is that is ridiculous
So I went to see Interpol live last friday as a birthday gift. Really enjoyed it!

no like i worded that wrong. it's when you have the basic part that isn't easy to build upon. like i know yuo can make it interesting, but you can't always do that. which ties into what mikey said where people just dont release that stuff.

A lot of drone is about timbre and texture. La Monte Young put out a couple of good releases where he just gets two voices that just sort of moan with their throat and harmonise over a single note. Really interesting stuff.
It's almost trance like.

So, Hakita, like how much total time was their entire discography you listened to?

Aaron Turner's new project. Has the drummer from Baptists on it, pretty good stuff, but it doesn't really push any new boundaries, just some really groovy sludge tbh.

but to be fair the prodigy do have to evolve, all the fans would be like "this some good shit" if another album like fat of the land and jilted generation were released.. but then absolutely everyone else would think "who the fuck is releasing an album that sounds 20 years old".
The prodigy were fantastic at their time, but that was the music of the era. It'd sound outdated if they tried the same styles.
I currently like the style the prodigy are going for; not drum and bass or (classic ) dubstep, but very, very heavy and very bassy. I can't imagine it ever being played on a radio or at the clubs, but I could imagine it being absolutely intense live.
absolutely everyone else would think "who the fuck is releasing an album that sounds 20 years old".
i'm p sure most fans of prodigy think their early years were best.

imo their recent work has fallen to loudness over all else:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB_nKpEkILs
still sounds vaguely like them tho
as far as heaviness goes, i still think this era has the edge:

I agree with nasty, it isn't their best work by far. I'm quite annoyed actually because they played some great songs in 2013 ( AWOL, jetfighter, bring the noise, the day.. ) and none of them appeared to have made the album, but every one of them is better than Nasty. And also, the 2005 edit of Break and Enter is fucking glorious. Both songs are great in their own right, but I love the style this has

I'm also glad they played Hyperspeed ( G-Force part 2 ) live, it's such an amazing, amazing song and it's totally random for them to have played it.
So, Hakita, like how much total time was their entire discography you listened to?
very long
i aint gonna start counting all the songs' runtimes together, that'd take longer than actually listening to them

This guy is phenomenal. He's criminally unknown for his talent. Found-object music ranging from ambient to tribal electronic. Utterly unique, and more people need to hear him because fuck he's good.
I was gonna see him live a year back but I got sick and couldn't go - pissed me off, because he's supposed to be great live.
"tribal electronic" sounds like something I really have no hope of being interested in

u might surprise yourself.
Fuck jewel cases. Fuck them all.
Bought some CD's from Njittie and a few of them got fucked up in the mail because they are brittle as shit.
I can easily get new ones to replace these but it's still annoying how this even got to be a standard.
Hello everyone. I'm from Montevideo, Uruguay.
My best friend is a musician, uses two big turntables, since the age of 15, we're 21 now. He DJs for the best rap crew ever in here (in my opinion), makes their beats, does the scratches live, etc. He also is getting in the EDM/Trap music scene, I don't know how much you guys are into it but he really has passion for it and has been getting hard at it. I've taken several looks at his works and he's been majorly improving over the time and he's managing some miracles in what refers to the local music scene here in Uruguay, I'm really proud of him (he makes all of us really proud).
A few days ago he saved my life from an accidental anesthetics-in-blood plus tons-of-alcohol overdose, and I'm really thankful to him. I've been wanting to repay him somehow. You don't have to do this but if you could help me just voting for his trap remix for this trap remix contest by the Far East Movement on wavo.me you'd be doing me a solid.

He's #13 at the moment and I've been closely observing him rising through the ranks. (Frankly we don't even like most of the top ones but that's obviously to each his own and such).
Thanks in advanced, appreciate it. If you feel this is misplaced let me know.
(Just found the Musician's Gig Room thread, gonna repost to there.)

imo, just ship the disc and booklet.
jewel cases are always a disappointment.
imo, just ship the disc and booklet.

Jewel cases are the sole reason I stopped buying CDs.
The only time I'm ever tempted to get a CD is when it's in a simple unfoldable paper case. I have like 20ish jewel-case CDs and about 8 or 9 of them are cracked or smudged or otherwise fucked up. 2 of them had the hinge break. Fuck 'em.
I only buy gimmicky CDs, seeing as I usually get vinyl, last CD I bought was a copy of liquid swords that came with a chess set

I listened to it earlier today and it didn't surprise myself at all
very few albums I'd call "tribal" are worth hearing tbh. They sound like cheap knock-offs most of the time.
this is good ambient:

If the lyrics are anything but clicking noises it's not real tribal
i pretty much always get CDs
case in point a copy of closer by joy division goes for $30 on vinyl here, second hand, and a second hand copy of the same album on CD will cost me $10 from a record store, and $5 or less if I see it at a market or at vinnies
I bought a good condition copy of Bjork's debut on CD for $2 here. I couldn't imagine finding that on vinyl for less than $25
[editline]28th January 2015[/editline]
CD's are in that wonderful territory now that vinyl used to be in where everybody thinks they are worthless so they go for super fucking cheap. Vinyl's are so popular that they jack up the prices at most stores now, at least in Aus.
When I hear "tribal electronic" I imagine something like Shaking the Habitual, which is amazin.

what kinda loser even buys CDs :~)
"tribal electronic" was a bad description of it, but I fucking love the style the guy's made and I thought I'd share it.
I'm finally digging into Bjork's new album and hunggnhhhlhjhlaldfakjlksjrsjra
