you would be correct. the rise of post grunge and family friendly metal (also known as 'hard rock'), the most mediocre genres known to mankind

yobviously you havent heard prog
yobviously you havent heard prog
prog is great tho and def not nearly as boring as generic hard rock
hard rock is hard though, why would you bash on guys who play hard rock that takes talent
prog can be good, Porcupine Tree for example, but there are a LOT of 'fluff' prog rock bands out there.
porcupine tree serve as a very poor example in the progressive rock department tho
there are a LOT of 'fluff' prog rock bands out there
and steven wilson unintentionally perpetrated this by serving as the most broad and well-known example figure of a "fluff" prog band before they adapted a less psychedelic-rock influenced style.
Never really liked any prog "insert genre here" bands. Like sure you are super technically gifted but that doesn't mean shit to me in the end.
i don't care about how much skill it takes, i just really like how a lot of prog sounds
progressive rock was a statement (albeit the more popularized of the ones at the time) of nonconformity to musical standards in the late 60s-early 70s era and a lot of characteristics that were relevant to that movement at the time carried over into bands that let the point go waaaaaaay ^^^^ their head to the point of being really drivel
progressive rock as a glossary term means basically nothing now as a result (and would've naturally wound up like that anyways because of how music has progressed artistically I think)
if we're talking about classic prog rock then Yes probably has to be my favorite
modern prog rock has devolved into a hundred thousand different subgenres that are all utterly meaningless when what makes them unique has nothing to do with the prog sound or label
yes + univers zero for lyfe
art zoyd 4 notable mention
king crimson are the best classic prog rock band
yes have some great albums but a whole lot of mediocre ones and some straight up bad ones too, plus nowadays they're more like a poppy self-parody than a prog rock band
KC's stuff is almost all great, they have some shaky stuff in the 80's and early 2000's but at least they never stopped progressing and changing as a band
between the buried and me's new album is a nice prog metal

i don't listen to king crimson, but i do enjoy my heap of yes and pink floyd every now and then.
does Frank Zappa count as prog?
because he'd definitely be my favorite in that case
Why are you guys not mentioning Van Der Graaf Generator.

trencher is good
Gojira's early albums are very prog influenced, they are quite fun.
Does anyone listen to sorta popular hard rock bands from the early 21st century? Stuff like Submersed, Trapt, Socialburn, Atomship, and the like?
early 2000's hard rock/"post-grunge" is probably the worst genre of all time
king crimson are the best classic prog rock band

Are you kidding their new wave stuff is on point
Are you kidding their new wave stuff is on point
i've listened to Yes' newest album but i don't remember doing so at all, i almost fell asleep during it
some of the most forgettable music i've listened to

no I mean King Crimson's 80s stuff, their new wave style. Not shaky at all. Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair are some of the best albums that King Crimson released despite not being prog. Beat wasn't that good but King Crimson became more shaky after THRAK.

It's funny because he hates most modern prog rock - finds that its too much of a throwback and doesn't incorporate new musical styles often enough. From what I remember he had a go about Flower Kings once because they're too samey and there was a drama about it.
For me I know that prog has been a really dirty word in mainstream sort of music for ages and is only now started to be reclaimed, I think probably dude to the new mixes that steven wilson has been putting out of old prog music and just a general open-mindedness, but it was still embarrassing to admit you listen to Yes until maybe last year or so.
On topic of good prog bands, Jethro Tull, Van Der Graaf, Pulsar, Caravan and T2's It'll All Work Out in Boomtown are all fantastic

I don't really think it was about rejecting traditional music styles as it was extending on them, musicians who were classically trained making use of that education when making psychedelic rock. There's a very natural progression from psychedelia to prog and a lot of psychedelic bands went on to be prog bands. The concept of it was extended on and extended on until it become too much and all came crashing down around them thanks to bands like Emerson Lake & Palmer lords of wankery 1972.

Discipline is fantastic, but i've never really gotten into Beat or Three of a Perfect Pair. THRAK is 90's and i love that album.
with "some shakey stuff" i meant stuff like Construkction of Light and Beat

Yeah you're right both those albums are pretty shit, though Beat does have heartbeat on it which is a good song
[editline]17th July 2015[/editline]
and I hate to say it because I used to idolise this guy to the point of god worship but Steven Wilson's new album only has like one good song on it and is mostly fluff shit, very disappointing
Yeah you're right both those albums are pretty shit, though Beat does have heartbeat on it which is a good song
for me, Neil and Jack and Me has a certain charm, something about it just clicks for me
doesn't Beat have that weird ass beat poem too
Neurotica, that's it, that's a hilarious song

listening to it again i actually like that song, it's really bizarre but it's very chaotic and funky
The only really low point on Beat was Two Hands imo.
if you guys haven't listened to it yet, try getting your hands on the VROOOM ep, it's basically just a couple tracks from THRAK but with much rawer, less polished production
the version of the song THRAK on that ep is fantastic
