melodic hardcore like early NOFX etc
no. nonononono no pop punk
really really really really good pop punk.
no. nonononono no pop punk
it's just surf rock vocal harmonies on top of vandals riffs played a bit slower [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] their faster stuff is comparable to melodic hardcore at least. I dunno what I'd call the majority of it though. maybe group it in with the "punk rock revival" guys like Swingin utters or whatever
If you want to call bands like the queers and screeching weasel who everyone else identifies as pop punk melodic hardcore it's ok
I dont call it pop punk because it's just ramones shit and I don't think of the ramones as pop punk. I think of sum41 and green day as pop punk
I call it melodic hardcore to differentiate it from aforementioned bands [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] automerge ): [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] because differentiation is the point of genres
I dont call it pop punk because it's just ramones shit and I don't think of the ramones as pop punk. I think of sum41 and green day as pop punk
God damn it, stop. You're embarrassing yourself.
If punk sounds poppy its pop punk I think the ramones are poppy as fuck to be honest. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline]
God damn it, stop. I completely disagree
I call it melodic hardcore to differentiate it from aforementioned bands [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] automerge ): [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] because differentiation is the point of genres
Think about it like this: Bands like The Queers and The Vandals were pop punk before Green Day and Blink 182. This means nothing to me, because I like early Green Day and Blink, but perhaps this might help you feel a bit better about calling those bands pop punk.
I completely disagree
Ok, but I'm pretty sure the queers themselves identify as pop punk. Greenday and sum41 came after them so I don't really get why you would define the genre based off of offshoots. Also the ramones are identified as "punk rock" not melodic hardcore so I don't get why you would shoot anything that sounds like the ramones into melodic hardcore.
I agree that the Ramones are pop as fuck. of course they are, by nature. they only knew how to write 4 chord melodies. It's not as if they were going to write bizarre dissonant prog adventures through time and space (bad religion joke here). Rooted in simplicity is melody, simply melodies are the basis of pop. However, pop punk is a whole different realm to me. How can you, as a human being with the slightest bit of sense say the greatest punk band in the world, the ramones, are the in the same genre as blink 182. how can you even think that? I really really really don't want to go on a rant about what defines 90s pop punk and what makes it on SO many levels different from early "pop sounding" punk of the 70s and 80s. YOU should be able to figure that out. It's all about the approach and delivery, not the note by note melody. You have a mix up. Why are you considering blink182 to be the defining band of pop punk? All genres have shitty bands. I know my shit and I know what pop punk is and I sure as fuck know that pop punk is the queers not blink182. I don't listen to blink182, greenday, or sum41 and I never will. But I listen to old pop punk all the time and it's not insulting to call it what it is. pop punk IS blink 182 and green day. that is literally the only genre they fit in. if you're going to call the queers pop punk, you have to accept that green day is the biggest band in pop punk and so on and so on. they define pop punk because they are pop punk and the queers are not "actually" pop punk. If you look back what they are doing is not infusing mainstream pop MENTALITY with punk music but just catchier, more melodic melodies while keeping a hardcore attitude whichiswhyicallitmelodichardcore and not pop punk okay? okay. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline]
I have a feeling you are looking down on me like I don't know what I'm talking about which is pretty hilarious
im not but fuck yuuuuu for thinking I am
I've seen enough local bands identified as pop punk to know they play pop punk and not melodic hardcore. Fuck you can google search for 5 seconds and my claim will be reinforced. Yeah, greenday is the most popular pop punk band. Who gives a fuck? They suck dick. I'm not going to pull wiki articles out cause I've seen hundreds of local pop punk bands as well as bands like screeching weasel live but a quick google search will affirm my claim. When I think of melodic hardcore I think of shitty bands like rise against not the queers. Also the sex pistols are a defining punk rock band but they by no means are the most popular so I don't get what your point is.
But green day isn't really pop punk anymore. I'd just call them alternative. At least Blink is somewhat respectable with their abilities to play music (see travis barker in transplants and aquabats)
melodic hardcore is not rise against they're a fucking hard rock band that wear punk clothes so they can steal bad religion's 90's audience so I think on that level we disagree NOFX defines melodic hardcore. Okay? That's where I am coming from. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline]
But green day isn't really pop punk anymore. I'd just call them alternative. How about we just call them hot topic punk and completely disassociate them with pop punk in this thread?
I really have no idea where you are getting the idea that queers songs have more hardcore influence than pop in them. I just really don't see how everyone I've ever known and me included could have accidently gone calling an obnoxiously poppy sounding punk band pop punk for at least a decade and a half without realizing we were apparently wrong. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline]
How about we just call them hot topic punk and completely disassociate them with pop punk in this thread?
thats honestly what I already do.
there's a context that has to be considered. I see where you're coming from there. If you're hanging around actual punks that know who the queers are, okay, fair enough. but in every other scenario, you need to talk on different terms, because to the people are are around, 90s pop punk isn't even punk, or is irrelevant It is, however, so I differentiate between the two. On a whole different level, it blows my mind that you think just because the ramones sound "pop," they were more influenced by it than they were "punk." You couldn't be more wrong, and the same thing can apply to plenty of other bands that could be defined as pop punk on the basis of their melodies and riffs and so on. However, for their time and in the context of that era, they weren't. I'm sure they would acknowledge they wrote fun, pop sounding riffs or whatever they might say, but that's not what it was about. It was about the presentation and delivery more than anything. The way I see it, thusly, is that genres aren't just things to define the musical style, but the people playing the style, their musical intentions, and the era in which said music was played. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] in short it's pop sounding, but it's which attitude prevails that is more important. do they act like pop stars? pop punk. do they act like real punks? melodic hardcore. the music displays this just by the nature of the personality.
I didn't say the ramones were more influenced by pop than punk. I was just pointing out that I consider them poppy as fuck and you agreed. To me the only pop punk that really exists is bands like screeching weasel, the queers, the vandals, etc so I certainly never even consider using greenday, sum41, or blink182 as models for the genre because I don't even consider them punk rock let alone pop punk but when debating with people I tend to let it slide because some people get offended over this. Either way I don't think either of us are going to bend on this and it doesn't really matter.
okay so as I said you don't even see those bands as punk even though they clearly take from it musically and integrate the punk image into the top 40s pop scene. I differentiate between that garbage and what I call melodic hardcore for that reason.

pop is a universe and basically a way of approaching music as a business. I see what you mean when you say pop, but when you put it in a genre name, it typically means pop in the traditional sense of commercial music, not catchy music with "cheerful" melodies and so on; we disagree that blink 182 is even pop punk. I mean when you see "pop rock" you don't think nice and catchy rock music like Ida Maria (the majority of which being called indie rock currently), but rather the pop rock machine that churns out your top 40 rock songs from disney and their kin
