yeah but it WAS ridiculous, just in a much more subtle way i'm talking "pisswasser beer", the bowling alley logo being, uh, phallic (i guess that's as subtle as it gets with gta), stereotypical characters, etc. pacing might've been a problem but as far as style goes, i enjoyed it. it tried being more believable and that made it a lot easier to connect with the characters
yeah but it WAS ridiculous, just in a much more subtle way i'm talking "pisswasser beer", the bowling alley logo being, uh, phallic (i guess that's as subtle as it gets with gta), stereotypical characters, etc. pacing might've been a problem but as far as style goes, i enjoyed it. it tried being more believable and that made it a lot easier to connect with the characters
but all that stuff was already standard to gta. those subtle little bits were already part of the whole formula ALONGSIDE the larger scale ridiculousness, so if anything, it was clearly cut down as was said before. all the things you mentioned were part of the series already, in fact. vice city had the movie cliche spanish druglord, the jewish "rosenburg" lawyer; san andreas had the hippie white stoner, and the insane hispanic girlfriend. IV was fun. however, the game ended up being so disjointed from the story that, in the end, i found myself not really being invested in either. instead i found myself fucking around more before getting back to doing missions, which slowly began to feel more like chores. the characters that were actually interesting were the ones who, perhaps not coincidentally, were reminiscent of the zanier characters from the old games, like Packie or Roman. however, there was still not a huge "voice of reason" present. even san andreas suffered from that a little bit with CJ, who had some serious judgement issues. GTA V struck the right balance imo. It did right everything that IV did wrong. IV had succumbed to the brown era of gaming. again, that's not to say IV wasn't good or that i didn't have fun, i just found it way way less engaging in terms of what it was intended to be. it's nice that they tried something different, i mean, of course. but that's as far as my appreciation can go for it. as a standalone game, it was revolutionary tech-wise, but overall feels misguided.
i don't think it was cut back though, in the sense that there's less in the game. to me it felt like the focus was shifted. while the wacky stuff wasn't as apparent, the character development was much better. a lot of side characters from IV were more interesting than franklin or trevor (franklin in particular was so underdeveloped that there's rumors that part of his story was cut from the game, or so i hear). V was so terribly written i didn't care for any of the protagonists
