I bought myself a new helmet yesterday. An AGV AX-8 Dual Evo:

It's amazing compared to my old helmet, an RJays Dakar (sold in the states as a Zox Roost RX). The AX-8 is 500 grams lighter than the RJays, shit-loads quieter, has a breath-deflector, chin curtain, it's ridiculously comfortable and looks awesome imo.

So then today I went and put it to a true test by beating some zombies to death while wearing it. It performed amazingly.

hmm, so, looking to get my first bike in the near future and I was wondering if a 2-stroke engine'd bike would be an option.
I'll be stuck to riding a 125 for a little while (UK) and I've been looking at sport bikes. The only 4 stroke bike that is in my budget is the Honda CBR125 (I'm staying away from the Chinese replicas). However, if I decided to look into 2 strokes, I would also have the option of buying an Aprillia RS125 or a Honda NSR125.
So, I have a few questions...
If the 2 stroke I bought was well maintained and had around 20k miles on (average mileage I've seen so far on them) the clock, how much work would I have to put into maintaining the bike? I've heard 2 strokes like to go through spark plugs quickly and need their top end rebuilt fairly regularly. How much would maintaining it to a good level cost?
Another point is insurance. I know different bikes will have different insurance prices, but on average, are they any more to insure?
I'll be using the bike for both commuting and "having fun" on I guess, so what are they like as a commuter? how quickly will I get through gas and oil?
My friend (who doesn't know much about bikes at all) suggests, after talking to him about 4 strokes and 2 strokes, seems to think I should just stick to 4 strokes, and not get involved with the "hassle" a 2 stroke may give me. However, like I said before, for my budget, I'll be stuck to a CBR125. So, the last question is, for general overall use would a 2 stroke be worth it? Would it perform (in both power and usability) just as well as a 4 stroke? I don't really want to buy something that I can only stick to a strict number of miles with.
Finally, Are there any 2 stroke sport bikes I should stay away from?
Bit of a long one, but I don't really know where I can find all this information in one place.

You can make a 2 stroke last as long as you know what you're doing, I.E warming up the engine before opening the taps, keeping the oil topped up, not riding like an overall asshat. While 2 strokes may appeal because they're a lot faster, they guzzle more petrol, sound like a chainsaw and a seized engine is a pain in the ass to deal with so I'd just go with a 4-stroke if I were you. Much less hassle.
If you want to go faster than 60mph get a 2-stroke
Id go for a 4 stroke for a daily commuter. You can 'have fun' on a 4 stroke too.
2 stroke is for that fun bike that sits in your garage most of the time.
Aprillias need new cylinders and pistons every 15.000 Km or so, they're pretty cheap though.
Oh yeah talking about 4 strokes. I am so damn exited about the 2013 Kawasaki ninja 250.
Once its available in the local stores, I'm totally getting that little bike.
Two-strokes aren't so hard to take care as everyone would expect. I had an 20 year old 125cc NSR for two years, it broke only once. Ate around 5-7 liters/100km.
And the sound, I loved it. That clattering and buzzing gave it a very aggressive nature.
Oh, and the way 2-strokes deliver their power...
If you're prepared to use your money on oil and gas (and maybe on new pistons, depends on how much you ride), I'd go for a 2 stroke.
Every motorcyclist should at some point own at least SOMETHING 2-stroke.
Aww hell, i want a 2-stroke dirtbike.

The sound gives me the chills everytime.
If I was about to get a 125cc it definitely would be a 2-stroke supermoto/enduro
I went to a track the other day with my honda CRF450. Then the 2 strokes started to show up and at first i was man they sound awesome.
Few hours into the day my view was very different and wanted them to fuck their 2 strokes off.
All noise no go.

Hey guys! I'm kind of a lurker here, I'm 16, and today I bought an 08 Sportster 1200, 105th anniversary! I got alot of respect from adults for being a teen on a Harley, I just thought I would share because I love it!

Yamaha WR125 is a great 4-stroke s-moto, reliable and great.
In my honest opinion 2-strokes are for the people who got loads-o-money to spend on their bikes, I've had a 2-stroke motorcycle break on me multiple times (mainly because I forgot to check the oil situation) so I've gained quite a hatred for them.
Forgot to check the oil situation? Seriously?
That's your fault then, don't hate on 2-strokes for that.

No seriously, 2-strokes spend so fucking much oil and I was in a hurry (late from school).
Also, comparing the fuel usage of 2-strokes to the fuel usage of 4-strokes, I'd go for a 4-stroke any day.
2-stroke mopeds are cool tho', better than 4-stroke mopeds, but as motorcycles 2-strokes are just a wee bit too hard on the wallet.
Just got this communist 2-smoker for £100. 1988 Jawa CZ 125.

First I'm going to get it running and see if I can turn it's ~7hp power output into 15+. Then I'm going to fit clip on's and trim down the rear seat to give it a cafe flair.

Might've been a problem with your bike then. My NSR went ~1000-2000 kilometers with one litre of oil. What bike were you driving?
that exhaust can't be very efficient

KTM 125 EXC...
I guess it's true what they say... "Keep Throwing Money"..
that exhaust can't be very efficient
I've heard of people getting them to do 110mph(from about 60mph stock) with an awful lot of engine modding, but yeah it is a terrible exhaust. They were purposefully designed to be for the average man and to be slower than the sports 250/350 twins which went 70/80mph.

You'll get a lot of respect from adults but not from sportbike riders lolololol
All joking aside, nice bike. A bit too heavy for my tastes but when you're in it for the thrill of riding who cares about what's underneath you as long as it's got 2 wheels?

some people like to ride like they are riding a couch some like to have fun...the choice is yours.
i have my shadow, comfy, less maintenance, rides my wife and I fine, but would like a bigger one. i have my wanna be cafe racer, it can ride two but usually dont.
riding for respect is like buy a car for its status symbol
also this is from the teaching instruction to be a harley saleman

not making fun of them but i don't like the maintenance schedule and dry clutch. but my friend has a 11 fatboy and it rides smooth as hell but i feel like its too tall, and doesn't handle very well. i don't buy stuff cause the brand i buy stuff cause it suits me.
Wow, that's ridiculous, but at least they know their reputation and use it to their advantage.
It's kinda sad, really. Every middle aged male I work with who's interested in a bike says they'd get a Harley, despite me trying to convince them there are other options out there.
Ha! That's pretty funny! I got the Sportster because it was dirt cheap, and clean as hell. And I'm glad I did, because it landed me a job working for them!
