The IQ test is a flawed measure of intelligence because it can be taken again and again, furthermore it only tests logical thinking skills which do not encompass all of what many people would consider 'intelligent'.
I'm glad Mensa has never approached me. This means that nobody out there thinks I'm an arrogant douche.
tbh i'd be tempted to join, i can imagine the magazine has some quite interesting stuff in it. and while i do meet the requirements based on an IQ test administered by an educational psychologist, i'm not sure i really want to pay for the privilege, since i wouldn't really want to go to the social events. besides, i'm already paying for my RSC membership and getting chemworld to read. so that'll keep me going for now.
People were bragging about having a 126 IQ?
Jesus Fuck.
If you have an IQ of 126 you scored higher that 90% of the human beings who took that test.
If you have an IQ of 126 you scored higher that 90% of the human beings who took that test.
I thought that was the 140's.
See, I'm trying to be all modest here and not mention my IQ because it would sort of defy my point but DAMN you are making it hard.
If you have an IQ of 126 you scored higher that 90% of the human beings who took that test.
What? Average is about 110.
Not that it matters, given how much it can vary.
That's what she said
If you have an IQ of 126 you scored higher that 90% of the human beings who took that test.
That is nothing to brag about.

And isn't it 90% of people in general? Not only the ones who took the test?
Mensa believes that the more knowledgeable a person is.. The smarter they are. Knowledge is not the same as intelligence.
No. Off the bat you are wrong. Mensa membership is on the basis of IQ and IQ tests are not knowledge tests. They are pattern recognition.
No. Off the bat you are wrong. Mensa membership is on the basis of IQ and IQ tests are not knowledge tests. They are pattern recognition.
Basically.
IQ is capacity for intellect, not knowledge.
Knowledge IS legit, IQ isn't.
People were bragging about having a 126 IQ?
Jesus Fuck.
An IQ of 126 is higher than 95% of the population.

Go poke around their website...
Heres one
"What's in it for you?
Good question.
There's the camaraderie of being among a group of diverse people who share your love of knowledge."
Take one of their tests.. There are knowledge questions within. They cost money though.

"We love knowing things" does not equate to, "membership in our group is dependent on how much you know."
They are using knowledge to mean intellectual pursuits.

Again...
Take one of their tests if you don't believe me. I think they have free ones or something..
God.
Mensa still sucks though
The joke was bad.
IQ has nothing to do with lizards.
[editline]06:15PM[/editline]
Fuck lizards.
I like Lizards, but that joke sucked ass.
Again...

You are not listening to me.
Mensa's only requirement for membership is that one score at or above the 98th percentile on certain standardized IQ tests.
IQ tests are NOT KNOWLEDGE TESTS.

Yeah.
Basically.

What counts as knowledge depends on society, too. I could spend the same amount of time memorizing random pointless crap as you spent at law school, and you'd be considered more knowledgeable than me even if I did, technically, know the same amount of stuff.
To just get in yes all you need is an IQ test.. Which isn't accurate either.
Everything else in their organization revolves around knowledge though.
So I'm not sure why they would use an IQ test for people who want to get in and talk about random facts they know.
What pisses me off about IQ tests and people like this is that they assume because I'm smart that I'm smart at everything and not bad at anything... like it's not a universal measurement of intellect and some sort of god-man skill measurement.
My math skills suck and I'm easily distracted, not to mention I'm thick-headed and am poor at logic puzzles. But since I'm smart this just means I'm lazy, not that it's just not within my capacity.

Probably because a club for people to sit around and say "I have a high capacity for learning but all I do is sit around high all day and eat Mallomars," would be even worse than Mensa is now.
What? Average is about 110.

I hope you're joking.

Intelligence is too much of an umbrella term to be defined by an IQ test. That's that. If you're intelligent in solving patterns, great! Doesn't mean your intelligent in everything else...

Law is random pointless crap.
No.
Go live in Somalia.

I swear I don't think I've ever heard something THAT stupid.
SAT and ACT are great equalizing tests to ensure that everyone is on a level playing field. It makes sense, really, considering the different ways schools handle GPA, curriculum difficulty, and class size.
A few peoples heads just started to swell.
I know someone in Mensa, he's an arrogant prick.
And he's gay.
Not that that matters.
I've known many smart people who are total idiots.
Not Black Mensa! Gordon Freeman's not an asshole!
I was actually considering on joining, because being apart of MENSA is a rrrreeallly good thing on Resumes.

this is the only reason to join.
