• Contrasting Canada and America: My learnings based on some time across the border

I live in Montreal
Detroit is akin to Somalia. And I'm sick of all the fucking French Canadians coming down a few miles in to New York where I live and speaking nothing but French and expecting me to understand them. I believe it's common courtesy to learn some language from the country you're going to.. so in this case: SPEAK FUCKING ENGLISH.

The government requires students to complete the course, but it's literally retardedly easy to do. Also, immigrants are forced to go to french schools, the only way to access english schools is if both of your parents were born here and completed school in english. The language laws are akin to the thought crimes depicted in the book (and movie) 1984. We even literally have "language police".
Northern Ontario represent! I actually vacationed to Michigan in March (Boyne Mountain Resort), pretty nice place. Things are so much cheaper than in Canada, and the USA has Cherry Coke (Addicted to the stuff now, can't get it back home). Our experience with the border was interesting, two people in the car were on laptops and weren't bothered going into the USA. The USA guy asked "When was the last time you were in the USA", it was the first time for my brothers and I, and my parents looked at each other and said "Wow, I think was at least 20 years". The border guy had a suspicious face on, though let us through after looking at the passports. On the way back to Canada, there was a basic question involving tobacco/alcohol possession and we were allowed through after he glanced that the passports. Being a teenager right now, I can't say for sure that I'm going to stay in Canada, being very interested in computers / technology is difficult and expensive in Canada even though it's right up against the USA. Heck, the state of California is larger than Canada, it's a wonder that Newegg even ships here, albeit with less selection and higher prices on the exact same items. Canada however, is beautiful and has a sort of charm to it...
It's actually sad because Detroit wasn't always like that. Watch a few documentaries about Detroit during the 20th century. Detroit boomed in that time, but it went downhill near the turn of the century, if I remember correctly. Detroit just needs to get its act together, as does the rest of Michigan.
It represents most of the big cities in the USA though
What. Pretty much everyone that visits San Antonio, Texas, (home of the Alamo and whatnot) thinks it is an incredibly beautiful city, which it is. Every country has shitholes. If every big city is like Detroit, then every city in the east is like Chernobyl. It's a completely unfair conclusion to jump to.
I go to canada a few times a month, because I'm about 5 miles from the border, and I have family there. What I generally find is that canadians are more polite, and generally nicer, which is great, but tbh I'm usually sick of it by the time I get back lol.
Come to Winnipeg. Nuff' said. "Eeeey wanna hav sum hot native luvin ehhhhhhh"
Detroit is a shithole and does not represent the entirety of the USA.
Windsor is the same way.
Canada is a country. America is a continent. Rate me late if appropriate. Not to say Canada isn't more awesome than the US, though
Here is my tl;dr tl;dr-Windsoe is better than Detroit. Read the headings if you want more.
Holy shit A city is better than Detroit?! That's fucking NEWS, I always thought Detroit was the best city ever! This isn't anything special buddy, pretty much all cities now a days are better than Detroit. Hell, it sucked even 30 years ago, just look at this clip from Kentucky Fried Movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVDDYQlmq0w
Sure that part of Canada might be nicer, but overall I think the USA is much nicer plus has the NFL :-)
But then how can you accurately contrast Canada and America using one of the worst American cities and one of the better Canadian cities?
Hahahah, don't tell me you JUST said Windsor was one of the better Canadian cities. [editline]02:55PM[/editline]
each city represents its own country in that the better community of Windsor has all of the positive qualities common in Canada
Haha, oh geez. OP is thoroughly confused. Windsor is a shithole. I would hope that Canada has more positive qualities than what Windsor has.
Dude, Detroit is not a very notable city for good things. Go to New York or Chicago.
I'd honestly suggest veering from a city and checking out MULTIPLE places instead of one. A diverse place such as the states requires viewing from different angles. Shit, check out national landmarks... Different states and places of interest. Mount Rushmore, Arlington National Cemetery, The Statue of Liberty, go to Gettysburg, take a walk around the capital, take in the culture and get a feel for what the country is, politics and everything else aside. Most of us Americans are pretty good people with some form of intelligence despite what you read.. Don't shaft the quiet majority in with the loud minority.
Make sure you don't move to Mississauga someone I know was almost stabbed to death by some punk ass Korean kids + The neighbours are annoying. Georgetown is for the cool cats :c00lbert:
While i've been to every major city in canada, and liked them all. Vancouver will always be my beautiful home and favorite <3
This paragraph is about how bad Detroit sucked By time you reach the city limits, it's disgusting. On either side of the highway are houses of vastly varying ages crammed close together and surrounded by old and broken vehicles. They have chipped paint, broken or boarded up windows, sofas in their yards which have not been cut for god knows how long. The highway itself becomes more and more filthy. Litter of all kinds masses along the hills to either side and in the middle and sides of the roadway. The overhead bridged walkways are cracked and crumbling, and of course fenced ever since someone found it funny to drop bowling balls on cars passing underneath, not that it matters as most of the fences are rusted and broken. As more litter masses and you begin to smell the stench of the industrial urban environment, they took the task of setting up rope, then soon chain-link fences at both the top and bottom of the hillsides in an effort to keep the city from the highway. The center concrete guards are now broken off in chunks, cracked, covered in graffiti. The roadway itself is cracked, and the paved sidelines on the outer edge of the road are missing small craters of material. Piles of garbage bags, broken and mishapped roadsigns, battered traffic cones and rubber tires pile up. We passed a dead dog left along the inner edge of the road. As you begin to see the giant concrete buildings, some fifty stories high, completely empty with every window broken out and covered with graffiti, they decide it's just damn easier to get rid of the fences they never take care of and build giant concrete walls on either side of the highway. The inner city is swarming with people on the filthy streets and cars weaving between the construction cones that block of sections of the streets for projects that have gone untouched for months. Blacks and whites intermingle, but no other minorities are to be found. Suits mix with hoodies as billboards fill the sky and the towering buildings block out the sun. You approach the border, you pay the toll to the bald, white US border patrol guard with sunglasses, an earpiece, and a nasty look, 4$ US, and continue on to the tunnel. You pass through and make it to the other side. You are now in Canada.
You sir, are a fucking idiot. I don't even think you live in Detroit. There are definentely NO areas like this even around the city. Sure, there are a couple of old buildings there, but that doesn't cause anyone to leave New York does it? I live in Detroit, and I think it's the greatest city in the world. [editline]12:48PM[/editline]
Holy shit A city is better than Detroit?! I mean the river there set on fire. ON FIRE. Oh and Columbus too that's not a very good place either.
I always wanted to go to America/Detroit, I'm from Vancouver, BC, Canada. I hear thats theirs a Henry Ford Museum there.
I always wanted to go to America/Detroit, I'm from Vancouver, BC, Canada. I hear thats theirs a Henry Ford Museum there.
We go every year almost, it's a great place. They even have the limo from JFK's assassination.

Tim Hortons is way better than Starbucks, hands down And btw, Toronto is way nicer than Windsor, I've been to Windsor and Detroit and I got to say, Detroit is a shithole
Tim Hortons is way better than Starbucks, hands down And btw, Toronto is way nicer than Windsor, I've been to Windsor and Detroit and I got to say, Detroit is a shithole
Windsor is a shithole, too.
Detroit is the junkie alcoholic cousin at the family reunion that even the aunt (His/Her mom) doesn't mind disowning if she didn't have to do so much paper work...of America
I live in Arizona, and I can say with decent confidence that, while we don't exactly have the same physical issues as Detroit, we certainly (and sadly) have the mentality: if you're white, you must be a good guy. A minority, you say? Let me pull you over, pull you out of line, or stop you in the street to search you, not because you're acting suspiciously, but because of the fact that you're a minority. The second Walmart and Starbucks moved in, we saw street by street of sold off, dead ma and pa shops. Sad.
Come to Winnipeg. Nuff' said. "Eeeey wanna hav sum hot native luvin ehhhhhhh"
Some parts of Winnipeg are pretty bad, but it has its nice areas as well.
Vancouver = San Fransico, I've been to both cities pretty much had the same feel. Even there bridges the Golden Gate and i'm not sure about the other one but it was blue. Have very similar designs.
Chicago is the best city in the U.S.
Chicago is the best city in the U.S.
Oh god no. I live near Chicago and to be honest it isn't the best. It isn't bad, but the crime is just awful in Chicago.

I live in California, but have spent quite a while in Arizona and that kind of stuff happens no more there than anywhere else. Hell, there are entire cities that are basically right out of Mexico (without the corruption and poverty). There's also a reason those ma and pa shops go out of business. Its because people would rather get things for cheaper with less customer service. Just because you like them doesn't mean the rest of the people do.
