Thrift Shopping & Antiquing V2: the kirederf museum of unnatural deals

A friend of mine bought this at an antiques shop, I think it's a mid century theater costume, really well made though. Leath, metal and even some chainmail. He made me wear it :v: He only paid 350 euro!

Did he really make you wear it?
Are you sure that you didn't put it on yourself because how cool it is
I was in his house for only about 2 minutes and he started putting me in the armor :v: (Apparently he does this with everyone that enters his place). There's an album on his fb page full of people awkwardly standing in his kitchen wearing the armor :v:
I forgot to mention I bought this for a few bucks a couple months ago. Came with the original box, but the batteries were left in so the contacts are corroded to shit. The talking part doesn't work.

Sometimes cleaning the contacts with alcohol will fix that.
I’ve also used just a bundle of (carefully placed) tin foil to repair some corroded contacts.
i purchased things yesterday

Radio Shack EC-375 Pocket Calculator - $0.99
R. Kelly - I Believe I Can Fly (single) - $0.99
Two boxes of 1MB 3.5" Floppy Disks - $2
Four ToneMaster 60 minute Tapes (awful, awful tapes. haven't used them but everyone online says they're horrible and can break your deck. got them mostly since they were sealed) - $1
INXS - Kick - $1
The Realistic C-90 was already used, but I got it for $1 since random tapes are always fun. Playing it back, it seems like it's a distorted recording of television from 1976. It's labeled 308116, which doesn't seem to mean anything, and it has this performance of the Boston Pops, a reading of a prayer originally written in the early 70s and appeared in some newspapers, and a full episode of Guiding Light sans commercials. I should upload this audio one day.
I need to go back for the rest of the Floppy Disks. These boxes have some disks from other brands which were also at the thrift store. The calculator doesn't seem to have functional +, . , 0, C, CE, or square root keys. Probably just bad contacts, but it works fine otherwise.
Should use the Sony floppies in a Mavica camera for the novelty of it.
Got an early Christmas present. Mom surprised me with a 1930 Penny Smoke machine, I flipped my shit. It doesn't work but I don't care this thing looks awesome. I heard jingling inside and after shaking it a bit some modern pennies popped out.

After you fix it, you should have it play when someones done with this:

I went through my grandpas old storage room today, found some real cool stuff.
Namely, this

[t]https://i.imgur.com/HuVgUgx.jpg[/t]
A willson wug-n2 gas mask, made for the us beurau of mines. Came in its original case, with an extra canister. The canisters are stamped 4-57 with an expiration date in 1961. The rubber is in mint shape.

Finally i can be the facepuncher stereotype.
[editline]24th December 2017[/editline]
Also found an old set of kitchen knives and a set of smaller records with the entire new testament on them.
[editline]24th December 2017[/editline]
And a bunch of rusty old lathe cutting tools
I'd be careful with wearing that thing, old filters had a tendency to use asbestos since we hadn't quite worked out how nasty that shit was yet :v:
Technically, asbestos in filters isn't that big of a deal. If the filter isn't physically damaged, the asbestos is probably still secure. Even if it has been shaken loose, there are particulate filters that will catch stray asbestos fibers.
I say that to assuage the "oh god I breathed in asbestos" panic. You still shouldn't use the asbestos filter - better safe than sorry.
Anyway, really cool item.
The canisters expired in 61, there is no way im breaking the seal on them, let alone breatilhing through them.
For the dutch thrifters: this week is a 5 episode documentary about thrift stores. It's mostly focused on the people running the stores and the social aspect. Tomorrow will be about the "treasure hunters".

Found this CRT HDTV from 2004, bought it for about 10000 yen ($100 for you Americans) including shipping from a person who did not need it anymore, through online flea market.
Although no 1080p, even at 720p and 1080i the picture looks great through its component inputs, maybe even better contrast than many LCD HDTVs. No HDMI but I worked around that by using HDMI-Component converter to connect Switch, still looks great and almost no delay of course.

Also great about it is that it has an integrated digital TV tuner still up to current standards, that also looks great.

Interestingly, it does not make that high-pitched noise that older CRTs make, maybe because the frequency used in displaying HD video is higher than SD video and therefore inaudible.
I think it was a really good find, because not only is it a great TV that still holds up, I also have my own TV in my own room now, and cheaper than any new TV.

IMA currently has Finnish stahlhelms for $50 a pop, which is super cheap. Guess they're trying to burn off the last of their stocks. Haven't decided if I want to order one yet.

HD CRTs are still better than most of the cheap LCD TVs you can get in terms of picture quality, contrast and clarity, except for the weight of them. If your set is like mine, it probably does 1080i instead.
The only real thing that they suck at is playing older games on them since some of them scale them wrong. At least that's the case on mine.

Yes, it can also take 1080i, digital TV broadcast is 1080i and the component inputs accept it too. 720p looks better because of less flickering though, especially with games. Also the Switch cannot output interlaced video anyways.
What TV do you have? I think 480p from my Wii looks not bad at all, maybe even better than the upscaling on the LCDs we have.

(Gamecube Fire Emblem on Wii with component output)
Also yes, it is fucking heavy at 59 kilograms, had to find a TV stand that could specifically support that kind of weight.
EDIT: I actually take that back about 1080i, I tried it with my PC and overall it actually looks even better than 720p, although the flickering can become noticeable at times.
Mine's actually a 36 inch Toshiba with a VGA port instead of HDMI, as well as the component ports. Nearly all of my consoles look real nice and clear, except for anything older than the PS1. For those, using the 100hz mode (PAL is normally 50hz) fixes the tearing that happens with some of those old games.
Being a 36 inch CRT, the fucker weighs nearly 80 kilos. I ended up getting a few of my mates to come and give me a hand to move it onto the biggest and heaviest desk I had.
Is there any audio equipment experts in this thread?

Someone gave me this, and a bunch of other audio equipment for free, and I'm trying to figure out if I was given anything special
It's an audio reel to reel, I've gotten a few at my work, but it seems kinda rough. I'd remove the front panels and try to restore them at the very least, and test to make sure it works. Grab a tape reel and an empty reel, pull the tape through and attach it to the empty reel.
went to a sketchy pawn shop when home for the holidays
found this for $5 (excuse the blur, already sold it so i don't have any other pictures :v:)
[t]https://i.imgur.com/h4HdBa2.jpg[/t]
and it had a lil surprise inside
[t]https://i.imgur.com/N2GLQDd.jpg[/t]
Also found omega ruby, kirby: mass attack, and bowser's inside story for $5 each. I'm keeping those though. I still gotta sell leaf green.
AND found one of these at a thrift store for $10, along with mortal kombat armageddon and eternal ring for ps2

That's pretty cool! These are original WWII german helmets converted for use after the war

These are made in Germany on the same tooling as the wartime helmets but are post-war manufacture.
Oh my bad, I read that they always used refurbished german helmets, makes sense that they kept making these after the war

So here's a full gallery of the place where that reel-to-reel is, I have permission to take stuff before they clear it out for good, so is there anything here that's special, or worth messing with?

The calculator is worth picking up and cleaning if it works. There's some classic audio equipment in there, but it all looks like it's in pretty awful shape. The IBM Wheelwriter is cool, but it'd absolutely need work and a thorough cleaning. Any idea what that suitcase thing is? I can't make out any of the words on it, but it looks neat and should be in better shape than anything else. The Fisher turntable/tape deck is fairly cheap, and the Audio Technica cart is honestly worth more than the entire rest of the unit. There could be value in those books. The box with the VCR ontop of it could have some neat equipment, and there's something Kodak related inside that could be worth checking.
Is this from a music school or something? The two reel-to-reels and the 'Silver Burdett Music' teaching set makes me think so.
It was a college that canned the art, science, music, and drama departments all at once, there's tonnes of art supplies, costumes, and laboratory glassware that I didn't photograph
