This was posted on Kevin Pereira's Twitter. Is that who I think it is?
that is neither SC nor the faye cosplayer I shot, but good guess. That guy's got a single studio flash indoors with a portable power supply and pocketwizard like three inches away
also his backdrop isn't touching the floor AND it's crinkling up against the stand aaaa make it stop it hurts

Flatmate just upgraded from D300 to D800, so he can "start taking good photos" now.
Sigh.
You should be happy. People like him keep camera companies in business.

pft fat chance out of getting sharp pictures with the d800, he needs a d800E that AA filter will ruin every image he ever takes
I don't know how I feel about this photograph or the post processing.

It's either someone who smokes weed or a species of giant talking trees.
Depends if they are fans of Tolkien or not, I'd go for the first option in this case though.
To be more specific someone who goes on r/trees on Reddit.

I thought it was short for "parents". Like when people say, "rents" only now teenagers are even more illiterate and say "ents" instead.

i don't know what the fuck
Okay, incoming small rant.
I entered a small contest for my photo club, as some of you may have read before. Although I was somewhat late, the entry got in anyway. Just recently I received some criticism on my image.
What the guy wrote wasn't that bad though, I appreciate it, but I'm always incredibly weak with criticism so I took it pretty badly. Almost bad enough that I don't really want to buy a dslr anymore, but I don't know
What really bugged me the most is his flickr gallery. Some images had too much HDR or had immense amounts of vignette. I don't know about you guys, but it really really bugged me

uhuhguhggjgh
wow that's not even hdr it's just intense toning and that vignette is so bad
Sorry I'm still new to photography, not too sure how to determine if something is hdr raped or not
Glad someone agrees that its bad though :v:
[sub]Going off and jumping right in on the assumption that said criticism was somewhat constructive, and not flat out trash talk.[/sub]
Honestly I think it's petty to attack someone's work, who gave you criticism. Yeah go ahead and take into consideration what level someone is when they tell you something, but don't throw someone in the bin because they aren't as good as you think you yourself are (maybe they see you the same way you see them), or label them as unworthy of any credibility because of something as superficial as their style (a lot of people here do the same thing as these HDR guys, but with 'vintage aesthetics') - however undeveloped. In fact, your reaction to the criticism mirrors that of how most of 'these guys' respond to finding themselves linked in this thread.
[sub]I'm guilty of doing exactly this at one point or another, and I'm not talking down to you, rather imparting some form of... experience. This is not a personal attack at you, or anyone on this forum - a holistic observation[/sub]
Am I calling you 'that guy'? No, but is it fair to publicly berate someone's work because that's your defense mechanism?
Also;

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
― (the oft-quoted) Ira Glass
that quote hits home pretty heavily
Everyone one of my photos, with the exception of a very select few I feel are terrible even though out while i'm taking them I think oh yeah this is a good frame, this is a good shot, lets do this then get ideas of what specific look I want out of it
I take it home, load it up in lightroom, and well fuck, i'm already hating it to some extent, but I edit it anyway, and what I had in mind, just doesn't do it for me, so many photos i've just tossed aside because i'm that critical of my own work..
The select few that I do like are generally the ones that also get appraisal (if you can call it that), but i've had people talk about how even the photos I thought were complete and utter shit are well shot and stuff..
at the moment, out of my 29 photos that i've uploaded to flickr; that i've selected from all the batches that i've gone out and taken, I only really like about 3 of them, and the reason I like them isn't because I think they're good per se, but because other people think they're good..
I think forums like this are a great way to get past that self criticism though, i've been getting a lot more confident with my shots and stuff in general, but I still only ever have about 2 or 3 out of every batch that I even consider sharing
I don't consider myself a good photographer at all, I like to think i'm my own biggest critic in that sense.. but getting rated artistic, winner, etc is definitely a good confidence boost and it encourages me to keep trying to get good photos
in relation to this thread, there's this girl I go to school with who I think is really, really pretentious about photography, rather than "that guy" she's a "that girl". She's not as bad as some of the examples you guys have posted though, it's more just bad composition I think..

I mean, she's got a really expensive and nice DSLR, but I don't thinks she's putting it to good use. There are select few good photos that I actually like, but most of her pics are either extremely bland and poorly composed (subject blurry, poorly framed, that sorta thing) or party photos that are extremely casual point-and-shoot looking with really, really heavy filter use (not that there's anything wrong with editing in the first place, just in the context...) but what gets me is she still puts in the description of the photos she's uploaded to her own facebook "Photographer: *her own name here*"
I kinda feel bad for criticizing her though
i kind of like that second photo you posted of hers
but yeah a lot of people with dslrs take p&s type pictures for facebook i've seen. i think it's more the people at parties wanting it than them liking the pictures. not much you can do with any camera at parties, you can't get (really) creative in a context of taking group shots without being invasive. but the bit with her tagging herself as the photographer is funny
Took a ton of photos.
Made them B+W.
I'm a photographer.

well, you took photos, so yes, in a sense you are a photographer
whether or not you're a good photographer we don't know
don't forget, a ton of photos in B+W can still be really good! it all comes down to composition and subject matter in that case.
So there's this whole hype thing going on where there's a handful of students making their own clothing brands...

It's so much fun to look at that stuff from the perspective of say... an alien or Jane Goodall type.
People are so goofy.
I know exactly what you mean bopie
I used to people-watch a lot out at the mall and such a few years back when I had nothing better to do than be away from home, it's kinda weird and makes you self-conscious of those natural tenancies to act certain ways.
More anthropology: some jackwagon with a cultural appropriation fetish commented on one of my headdress shots. His entire photostream is stolen photos of women sluttily dressed up as Native Americans. NSFW
The cretins he attracts...

When I saw the "D" Logo on the shirts I just thought about the word royal.
I went to google and typed in royal font and just the second link turned out to be the right one. http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/detail.htm?productid=476462
Apparentely this is a commercial font. I wonder if they payed the 66 bucks to use it.
The crown also kinda looks like if it was pulled of google images or if it was a word art or something like that.
that's a weird fetish of his, liking naked white girls dressed in native american outfits
