If you don't like the guy, so what?
Delete him on facebook if it bugs you that much. You're not benefitting himself or yourself by bitching about him on a forum.
Tell him to his face if you want something done about it, don't pretend to be his friend then stab him in the back.

I can't tell if you're just talking to the guy above you or not, because the whole point of this thread was to bitch about these people on a forum.
It's always nice to bitch about people sometimes, and this is a relatively harmless way to do it, so I really see nothing wrong with it.
honestly, I try and nudge my 'that guys' towards not being so bad, but even telling them right out that they're being dumb/snobby about something will just get them to think you're being dumb/snobby/jealous of them. That's kind of why they make the list.
I won't just drop friends for being that guy, because they're still worth something outside their photography. I think you'd have to be pretty shallow, and that gets a little redundant. The ones I CAN drop are one-offs that I just happen to run into constantly at conventions.
There's "that guy" in other fields too.
I'm into electronic music, when I mix I use an old pair of Stanton PT-2000 turntables and a Stanton SK-one mixer, which while not being useless piles of junk (in fact, I like the simplicity and ease-of-use of these machines) they remain relatively low-end cheap stuff. For my live composing I use an eeePC loaded with Renoise and Puredata on Linux, an M-Audio Trigger-Finger MIDI controller, and the ONE relatively high-end device I have, an M-Audio FastTrack Pro audio interface.
So all in all I think I could replace all of my stuff for under 2000€. I like it that way, I'm not afraid to bring my stuff to parties and getting beer all over it, and I can pack for a gig with a simple back pack (not when mixing, turntables are fucking heavy).
But invariably, I'll get other musicians come up to me and comment on my set-up like they need to validate the size of their penis. They have expensive Macbooks, Moog synths, Technics 1200s and all the rest. Call me jealous? Sure, any one of their devices costs as much as all my stuff combined, and I'd love to have the money to splash on that kind of kit, but does it make them better musicians? Not when they don't understand their kit, and can't remember how to plug it all together, and don't even know how to beatmatch.
I'm not saying all rich electronic musicians are bad, in fact quite the opposite, but I notice a trend of musicians gloating about their kit and not even knowing what half the knobs do.
Oh god this guy's got a Tumblr now. Latest post kills me inside, just look at his rates!

I think there's a line in which we're allowed to sit back and laugh as we wonder how on earth some people get such egos as to do the stuff we post about in this thread.
Have you ever been to the DeviantArt Appreciation Station? THEY take it to a whole new level.

Oh boy, so JW from the OP rant just informed me
he got ALL of his gear stolen at the last convention, and the only thing he had to say about losing a Nikon D2x and several expensive new lenses?

clearly he has more important things on his mind.
Which reminds me, I later found out that he actually hooked up with my photo assistant (who happens to be a stripper). She's a damn good photographer for only having recently started and only uses a D3100 with a kit lens.
I can taste irony
Okay guys, I'm not going to tolerate any impersonators.
I'm working my ass off to one day afford a D7000. And then hearing about kids who get one from their parents, and then they take the most god awful pics ever and then brake it because "someone spilled beer on it LOL! it was waaay to complex anyway xD"
Luckily I've never met someone like this, but I bet there are a couple of them.
I know a "that girl." She owns a DSLR, takes bland pictures of flowers, adds some shitty filters, posts them on Facebook, gets a ton of Likes and compliments, thinks she's good. She even took some of my pictures of my friends, I took using my phone (Not meant to be artistic btw), and slaps some nasty filters on and tells me, "There, I made your pictures better."

a friend of mine who takes generic cellphone self-portraits recently went to a car show and took several pictures at an angle using one of the hipstermatic apps to make them all artsy filtered.
Posts up an announcement:
Everyone check out my new photography taken tonight at a classic car show that I posted-comments under images you like are much appreciated! Enjoy.
go to the album "My Photography: Summer 2011", this is what I'm greeted by

and aside from the flood of "WOW THIS IS AWESOME" comments on each individual picture, I found this on the album-
[Derp] you have took some great photos of your self and [Herp] you should take it up for a job. you and [Herp] look great together you guys are the kind of guys i would hang out with i wish you and [Herp] just leaved next door to me. keep up the good work tell [herp] i said hi!
yet another reason I don't mind jumping ship to google plus, the friend-accumulators looking for ego stroking aren't going to follow any time soon, I'm hoping there will be less of the stereotypical "~MY ART~" galleries

My sister just swapped cars at my office to take our van so she could fit all of her friends. One of them had a large camera, which I found to be a 7D with a battery grip and what looked to be a prime lens stuck to it. Boy looks like your average fresh out of highschool scenester/jock/stoner mix, but I have hope that he's actually using it to full effect.
--actually, it looks like I managed to facebook stalk him by accident, he has the same obscure name as the older bully from my neighborhood. strange. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mantasphoto/
sometimes I wish I had that much overconfidence. :v:

He's not that bad really. He's 1/3 way into a 365 so he is actually bothering too.
This shit actually hurts me inside to be a photographer.

Well that's what happens when you have friends who don't critique.
The reason why I stopped posting my stuff on Facebook rather started to be super critical on Facebook. People ignore me a lot. :(

I think I worded that weirdly.

what
I guess I am kind of "that guy"
We got a very nice EOS 450D home and I love it, but everyday I wish I could just upgrade to a 550D.
Also if I had the money I would buy all sorts of lenses, I mean, I only got the kit one right now ...

but do you complain that you won't be good unless you upgrade and buy everything, or do you make due with what you've got? There's a key element there, since I'm sure all of us would get some nicer equipment if we had the cash :v:

Okay, might not be "that guy" then because I like to use my current gear and I know that I cannot even use half of it's capabilitys.
This thread is depressing.
I end up comparing myself to all the 'that guy's and lose my enthusiasm for photography in general.

pfffff
I'm sure you've been told by everyone in the section how you're way too nice and very knowledged in technique and technology. Everyone keeps comparing themselves to the fact that some 'that guy's obsess over getting better equipment. Even you've said that good photographers know that it goes hand-in-hand with ability and accessory.
<3, man. <3.
Should I close the thread just to avoid more of this nonsense? It does seem to be getting generalized.

so tempting
I don't know much about photography, but I went to a music festival last weekend, and there were loads of incompetent photographers, they would be infront of the railings, fiddle with settings for about 10 minutes, take one shot, and do the same again. Plus there were girls with pretty decent DSLRs just holding the damn thing up and snapping random pics.
