All you really need is a good solid fast 50/35 prime. A wide/medium zoom can compliment the set up as well. You don't really need anything else unless you have a specialized need, like motorsports or wildlife.
he's talkin' telephotos capable of 2.8 or better specifically. Not sure why, but sounds especially expensive if it's only for the occasional long-range portrait. I'd say he could use it on wildlife and the like, but I'm 99% sure that he only does cosplay photography. Never seen anything but that from him ever, minus the occasional shot of his car.
wouldn't it have made sense to include that in your original post then...
I thought since I bitched about it, it's obviously pointing out that it's not done properly.
So many of the girls and some of the guys in my old class had DSLR's that they got from their parents. They would bring 'em to school and take those horrible stretched-out-arm-pointing-camera-at-yourself pictures with their friends. As far as I know that's pretty much all they did with them, other than taking a few photos on auto in the park. I was just so pissed off at this guy who had a 550D and never even used the video capabilities.
There's this girl in my school who got a DSLR for her birthday (A D3000 I believe), and all of her shots are out of focus pictures of duck faces and flowers, and of course she only uses it on full auto and she always uses the popup flash. She's always talking about "how much zoom" the kit lens has. One day we were talking and she asks me "So how much zoom does your camera have?" Now at the time I had a 20mm f1.7 mounted so I tell her "Oh, this lens doesn't it's fixed". She gives my a puzzled look so I tell her "It doesn't zoom in or out" to which she replies "That's dumb, why would you get a lens that doesn't have zoom? My lens has tons of zoom." which she says as she's twisting the barrel. I start explaining to her all the advantages of having a prime and she apparently has no idea what I'm talking about. This same girl also likes to make fun of me for shooting film by saying "That camera's sooo old (an Olympus OM-1N) why would you even bother using that camera?" At this point I explain to her why I enjoy using film to which she says "Well that's just a waste of time". Did I mention she watermarks all her photos?
^do you have her on facebook?

Wait wait those were shot on a D3000?
What.
I mean I know it got some bad rep from some critics but come on it's still a modern DSLR I don't even understand how you can make photos from such a camera look that bad how does this even happen
i am confuddled

The thing that frustrates me the most is that there are so many talented kids who are working their asses off to afford and would benefit hugely from a DSLR while this girl wastes it.
Above quote is awesome.
Honestly, I think I want to be that one guy with a ton of fancy equipment to choose from, just not that guy who doesn't know how to use it and claims false knowledge of such an eye opening hobby.
It really gets to me when people say that. Always it's totally the camera.
"your camera takes good pictures"
"your mouth makes nice compliments"

No. If I get to facebook any other way the address bar is blank. I cleared my cookies and it still showed up when I clicked the link, and only when I click the link.
Not showing up like that for me.
There are Facebook phantoms in your computer, bro.

Do you guys think I was too harsh? He's a good kid but his photography is a little lacking. He takes it seriously and has an honest character, so I would hate to 'bully' him.

I wish I would have just dropped the link off in his inbox saying something like "Hey I saw you like light leaks, check this out!" or something along those lines.

I really don't see the point of making fake light leaks, or having them on film. Light leaks do nothing but ruin my photos.
I agree, but that wasn't the point at hand.

If you're implying I think I'm on an ivory tower I still think I'm rather shit photographically. I'm on a bronze tower at best.
Just saying that light leaks are dumb to purposefully employ.

You don't get it. One doesn't think they're in an ivory tower, they act like it. Which is exactly what you are doing, and highlighted in bold.
I'll elaborate. Being in an 'ivory tower' so to speak has nothing to do with how competent you see yourself as, it's how easy it is for you to look down on others. You're condemning something other people do because you think it's dumb. The ivory tower thing is directed universally, it was meant to be commentary about how it's hard for a lot of people in here to relax their standards. That kind of attitude is 'anti-creative', because you get stuck in concrete thinking, devoid of experimentation. Even then, you have to be able to accept the fact that everyone starts out somewhere. You have had much more time than they have to learn the ropes. That doesn't make you more sensible, mature, etc. Your attitude is parallel to the 'hipsters' you talk about.
Simply put, it's being a snob. You can't go around expecting everyone to have ~perfect taste~ like you - you'll never make friends.
It's the same psychology as the nerd that jacks off to 10's on the internet all day and has unreasonably high standards for girls in real life, constantly pointing out flaws in average women that wouldn't even look at him twice.
Harsh, but honest.
I love your pictures and I respect you as a photographer, but I've watched your attitude slowly go downhill.
I had to say something, and I'm sorry it was harsh.

Ok thanks for pointing it out, I guess my attitude has been a bit bad recently. My mindset was that the only way I improved was through criticism, so that's all I seem to have been handing out recently but maybe it was a bit over the top.
