FX can totally take you out of a film if its noticable and on the other hand knowing what you are seeing is real can keep you locked into a film more intensely. I dropped a thread about a film called Waterloo here a while ago and the reason I went hunting it was because something like 14000 extras from the Russian army were used to make it. The scale of the film was staggering and the movie was excellent. CGI is a great leap but should be used proportionately, Inception was a good use of CGI with a great mix of story. If we were all to name our favourite few films I wonder how many would be on the basis of fx?
I still like Avatar, and even then, that's mostly for the CGI.
i watched Alien again. that animatronic mouth beats every attempt at CGI ever the chestburster certainly hasn't aged well but the facehugger is still good
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy is a good example of modern phyical effects. From memory there were only a handful of locations and creatures which weren't physically made, and it added to the movie immensely. Thumbs up for puppeteers, the unsung heroes of hollywood.
Speaking from a horror perspective, I am a very big believer in physical effects > CGI and whatnot. Even if some physical fake blood can look overly cheesy, it's still way better than any CGI blood. I think that's what horror is sort of about, finding the creative ways to create the effects that you need in order to make it scary. Somehow the element that it was actually recreated makes it that much scarier as well. Take something like the Evil Dead remake. While the movie itself is unnecessary, they're sticking to physical effects like the ones enforced in the original. That is what horror film making should be, at least in my opinion.
The Thing is one of the best examples I can think of that proves what you are saying.
