Corruption in gaming journalism discussion and update thread.
I see it more as a symbiotic relationship, but it's still a problem that needs to be dealt with. And, if push comes to shove, I'd rather alienate the anti-SJ folks if it means ending harassment in/from GG.
Either way, I'm sure as hell going to distance myself from any of those anti-SJ folks the moment GG succeeds. But we get to use each other for now, as long as we are able to check the conservative and hardline rightist folks. I have no problem if conservatives are in the movement as long as they aren't assholes.
What is 'success', though? I mean, people obviously have very different definitions: some want to root out corruption but are hazy on what does or doesn't constitute corruption. I, for instance, would consider positive coverage of a game written by someone in a relationship with the developer (Patricia Hernandez) to be clear cut corruption. A mailing list between media types and newsmen/women seems perfectly natural to me, though, and I think you'd find very few industries covering any kind of news without similar lists.
Meanwhile, if you go on the steam reviews for Depression Quest you'll find endless people talking about the endgoal of GamerGate being to remove the game from steam. Others would like to see this or that journalist or developer leave the industry, they'd like a reorientation of games journalism etc. etc. In short I see a lot of disunited (honestly misdirected) anger going in a bunch of different directions without a purpose.
if this 4chan hullabaloo keeps up and becomes precedent 4chan will cease to have regular visitors in a matter of weeks.
I've turned my adblock back on for 4chan, and it's staying like that unless moot shits all over his mods.
That's a valid point, but I never mentioned anything about success ;).
My original end goal honestly was just to get people to admit that ZQ is abusive. Which, well, still hasn't succeeded since most people have no idea what she put Eron through. But over time I started to realize that journalists were being extremely disrespectful towards gamers, and the "gamers are all dead" articles killed it for me. There was so much entitlement and mansplaining going on. Then people both in and outside of the industry started to privately message me, and warn me that a lot of key characters in the community were abusive, hurtful, manipulative, destroyed careers for profit, ladder climbers, opportunists, two-faced... list goes on.
So "success" for me is a.) getting people to recognize abuse in the industry and out abusers, b.) end bad ethical standards in gaming journalism, c.) encourage higher standards for journalism that encourages critique over blogging, and d.) break the current echo chamber in social justice communities that forces abuse survivors into exile in order to protect themselves from abuse.
I'm more than willing to use conservatives to accomplish A through D, as long as they aren't given a position to jockey themselves into the power vacuum that will appear.

Deni, I'd recommend reading Amanda Machin's "Negotiating Climate Change: Radical Democracy and the Illusion of Consensus."
While I don't agree with her views about Radical Democracy, infact its quite bare when it comes to discussing policy making. Its a great book to read looking to understand the successes and failures of non-leadership based movements such as Feminism, Occupy Wallstreet and GamerGate.
In it, she makes the argument that we need to start celebrating dissenses, because voices, especially minority voices or voices with little power get drowned to go headlong into a consensus on what to do.
What we're seeing, a lot of respects, is the formal culmination of a feminist movement coming back together to rebuild its ranks. In this process they've shed a lot of dissenting views and alienated a lot of people. Gamergate on the other hand, was born of the internet, created by the internet and therefore is a classical decentralized movement at its core because we can sit here behind computers from all over and discuss.
We have a greater opportunity, with all these different opinions to create effective change. TO focus in on only one singular thing would be ludicrous.
And before anyone mentions, yes I do attack Feminism for decentralizing itself. That reason is only because its stretched itself entirely thin by doing so and has reduced its effective ability to do anything.

I knew the Jews were behind this!
But seriously. why Germany?
Until moot makes a statement on this debacle, the site will continue to be a mess. Everything about this has gone against what moot has built the site up to be; a place where people could speak their minds freely and anonymously.
Perhaps because there might be a disproportionate amount of pro-GG people from Germany? That'd be my only guess though.
It'll be interesting to see what he has to say

Well that's one way to put it, but I don't know
when the fuck does video game villain logic stop being video game villain logic and start being real

Welp, Tear down the Wall!
Why contain it? Let the death threats spill into Tumblr and Facebook, let the harassment pile up in the IRCs. In the end they'll beg us to save them.

Wait...Are we the bleeding hearts?
i think this is probably the best time to ever have garry as an administrator
as a side note, there's not one iota of gamergate related discussion in the mod chat. its the best

Get your air tanks on ladies and gentlemen. We're going down the rabbit hole, and it's hard to breath through all the bullshit.
Speaking of which, you're going to want to read this. Interview with a Microsoft Dev. He's not just very pro-GG, but he flat-out calls for legal repercussions:

Its corruption in gaming and journalism its always been there, just the right combination of circumstances caused a bit of a scandal, and by god instead of putting out the fires those involved poured gasoline on them.

Ittle be nice if game journalism ,gaming in general ,and social justice see a reform out of this I have interests in all three and all three I have turned on me.

This was so refreshing to watch. It's an utter shame that she gets attacked by these radical SJWs for not blindly siding with their cultural hate-crusade.
If they're getting their name censored, they could probably sue. Because they're getting their backer privileges taken away when they were promised compensation for funding.
If they're being given their money back, then that's just fucking ridiculous.
I was looking forward to Mighty No. 9 too. Fuck it.
There was a thread where someone simply asked if they could discus GG on the MN9 forums and one of the mods said something along the lines of "We won't allow the defamation of someone's character go somewhere else to talk about it" and locked the thread.
I fucking love how dire this situation has gotten. Both sides have gotten absurdly desperate. Anti-GGers have resorted to censoring 4chan, Reddit, NeoGAF, and many other sites. The users on these sites have enacted a mass exodus to satellite sites just to discuss corruption in gaming journalism without being banned en masse. Just glancing at Twitter is like watching a train crash into a battlefield.

I think the more humorous parts of these fights are the weird as shit pauses. Like, someone's cow just got blown up and everyone's blinking and staring at said cow trying to figure out how it got there.

Also boyfriend is raiding 4chan and fails miserably.

What really gets to me is the constant and steady escalation. Every couple days something shows up which is the worst thing ever, even worse than the last worst thing.
I'm actually going to a place with no Internet connection for about a week, and I fully expect to come back to deserted cities and one guy babbling about "The Flesh That Hates"

Its a video from the American Enterprise Institute.
They've supported things like comcast with net neutrality http://www.esquire.com/blogs/news/comcast-astroturfing-net-neutrality
They've also done quite a bit against global warming http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Enterprise_Institute#Global_warming
Also, the person who made that, she works with Prager "University". A right wing "education" group that makes some pretty "right-wing" videos. I'm pretty sure a good amount of people here have heard about prager university. http://www.prageruniversity.com/
I'd be real cautious of supporting anything done by the AEI.
After you've returned, we're all brainwashed and batshit insane.
