What was the panel about? Was it the one about mocking game journalism?

The Internet is full of empowering tools, but who are we empowering? It often feels the most toxic voices have strangled our ability to have a conversation, and we’re used to a world where death threats and harassment are expected and tolerated. The Internet is vital to both gaming and our personal lives, and it’s not going away. Can we make it better? What do you do when faced with the worst the Internet has to offer? Is there any hope? A panel of industry veterans will present stories of their experiences on the Internet, and how they came out on the other side.
would of loved to sit there and watch all by myself
There are many reasons one can get involved in this, if you're gonna stand there and use a blanket excuse instead of actually calling out specific people you're not creating a discussion, you're putting out a red herring.
Yes, there are douchebags within the movment that are completely being misogynistic shit heads and any time I've seen it I've called them out on it in both this thread and larger thread in SH.
You can't police people, you can't police a mob so all we can do is go in for our own reasons and hope that's enough.
If you're willing to blanket statement that, I dunno how we can have a discussion about that.
This type of response is exactly what I was talking about - I'm not "putting out a red herring", I'm using a discussion thread to discuss the issue. Whether you think gender matters in this case or not, you cannot deny that many people on both sides do think gender matters so it's something that we can't ignore. It's a major contributing factor to the arguments that (literally) thousands of people are making.
If you're willing to blanket statement that, I dunno how we can have a discussion about that.
The "blanket statement" you're referring to is me literally saying "we shouldn't stifle elements of the debate". You then follow it with an attempt to stifle the debate by passing me off as an unreasonable person incapable of debating properly. This is a disgusting tactic and it's one that both sides have been guilty of employing far too many times since the very beginning of this thing. Had people not acted this way in the first place I wouldn't have these concerns. You're only contributing to the hostility by taking this approach.
For everyone else who replied to my post, I acknowledged your post by rating it. I don't feel the need to quote a whole post just to say "I agree/disagree", but I read all your posts and thank you for making them. If I overlooked something important and you want a more detailed response, absolutely bring it up again. (Or PM/visitor message if you think it'll derail)
I seriously don't understand this stream.
Can you give me some examples of widespread discrimination? I really have yet to hear of any active discrimination against lgbt that isn't people calling an lgbt person an idiot on an issue that has nothing to do with their sexuality. Also, how exactly is the gaming industry the most conservative entertainment industry in the world? Even large companies like EA games allow you to play as a gay character in a couple of their games and a good few games have some well developed female and LGBT supporting characters.
When I look at the films I've watched the only trans characters that really come to mind have been rapists who've gone insane or drag queens who serve a comedy role. With gaming I've at least not seen that trend and have seen characters that could be assumed to be trans.
The kickstarter for Gaymer Con 3 is well on its way to getting more funding than ever without anybody actively trying to stop it as well. Its pretty clear that there is room for progress but I don't think its fair to describe the gaming community or industry as something completely sexist and anti-lgbt.
I don't think its fair to call any community 'completely sexist and anti-lgbt' but how is it so easy to forget that before all this shit started Anita Sarkeesian's video casually spawned 100 page debates in this very forum with half the people just knocking her for simply being a feminist and trying to start a discussion about it
but I'm not qualified to say really. Ask someone who is trans or queer or a woman if they feel they're adequately represented in gaming culture, see what they have to say

I've felt that, even before this, there's been a very large gap between people that play games and games journalists. The Mass Effect 3 ending controversy was the first obvious example of it IMO, because journalists were pushing line that it was good and artistic and that the people that hated it were entitled crybabies that wanted a fairy-tale ending. As the controversy grew, they still stuck to their guns even though it was obvious something was genuinely wrong with the endings to someone that had never heard of a "Mass Effect" before. It eventually faded out, but the deep divide between gamers and game journalists was exposed for all to see.
For the past few years, I've considered game journalists tinpot social revolutionaries trying to push "liberation" (if you consider liberation shaming and yelling at those that slightly disagree with you, including the people you're trying to protect) onto the unwashed white male masses, even though gaming pretty much encompasses everyone at this point, from blacks to whites, communists to fascists, and Quake 1 players to Farmville players. It created an environment where games were pushed back in favor of posting freshman-caliber screeds about while privilege and sexism meant to jack off the writer's ego. GamerGate is just the repercussions of this faux-inclusive behavior coming home to roost.
The toxic behavior of these so-called "progressives" is probably one of the reasons why I tend to lean towards classic game communities these days because that type of bullshit is not tolerated there. I mean yeah, there's sexism and shit, but I'd rather flinch over someone calling a woman a cunt once in a while than be the victim of a witch hunt because I said something that a San Fran-dweller with a hero complex slightly disapproved of.

Probably a false flag/he's using this to get examples for his presentation and they didn't start letting people in yet.
To be honest, calling this "gamergate" probably did a lot to make outside observers not want to take any of this seriously. Whoever coined that name did the whole scandal a huge disservice.

Wasn't that the gaming journalism sites?

Thinking more about it, the more I think I agree with you. Gender actually is a central issue, whether we like it or not. We should probably address it head on rather than merely sweeping it under the rug.

I didn't mean to come off as an asshole, its just any time facepunch or whatever gets into a discussion about gender it always goes to shit.

I personally like "The Quinnspiracy," it's too convenient and kinda ironic when you think about it. :v:
I'm am still baffled as to how someones sex was brought into something that is someone sleeping with another person whos position would create a conflict of interest. Someones gender has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I think this is more or less the source of the gender-related frustration. "Feminism" – as it's been rebranded in the last few years, implies all of these radical parts that aren't necessarily what many feminists actually believe. This tweet is coming from a feminist/ex-philosophy professor.
I really want some big name celeb to just step in and shit on these guys. Someone big enough that they cant be damaged or pushed around by a bunch of bloggers. I really, really do.
I mean, imagine if Daniel Craig, Snoop or Vin Diesel just come out and start bashing the shit out of these prats.

Adam Baldwin's been helping out for a bit now, although admittedly he doesn't have as much of a following as vin/snoop etc. He's actually been retweeting Internet Aristocrat videos to his 188K followers

i want to see if there's like discussions that just point out how people defending #gamergate are stupid, like we do to the people actively opposing it
to be fair, this thread is a bit of a circlejerk considering most everyone is on the same page
[editline]1st September 2014[/editline]
Christina H. Sommers is a clever lady and is slowly retracing the very steps as to how gaming journalism corruption is a huge part of all of this
I think a psych professor is someone who's definitely qualified to deliver an analysis of the situation at hand and hope people will listen to what she has to say :)

They won't. They'll just call her a traitor to her gender and ignore anything she says, no matter how smart or well-informed it is.
