It's always interesting to see what (gaming) journalism decides to report on. What they think is newsworthy. A lot of sites just go for the safe choice of Anita, and [B]then[/B] on a side note mention the gamergate thing. This makes it sound like this debate is once again mainly about harassment of women and those "gamers" pretend it's about integrity, ethics, and stuff.
Lately I've seen so many circlejerk articles bashing gamers while displaying them as sexist bastards. Well, to quote someone: "I cannot eat as much, as I would like to puke".

while this is an old article, I can't help but feel consistently disappointed at the way these articles seem to skim over anything which isn't enormously popular. it's not as if popular films are hugely different to video games in their representation of minorities and women: I had a quick look at RT for some of the currently popular films, and looked at the protagonist on wikipedia for each

but for some reason, nobody cares and it's just sort of accepted. review publications certainly don't care. go back to games, and it's all "thank god games are slowly getting better in their treatment of women, here look at these couple of popular ones where you can now play as a woman" as if things were some kind of uniformly nightmarish wasteland before 2011.
no mention of Beyond Good and Evil? where's Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, the game with ONE playable white guy in a cast of seven? where is the acknowledgement of all of these brilliant games which lie just beneath the surface of the medium?

I dunno, I don't want to complain. I know the vast majority of characters in games specifically cater to people of my sex and race. I want to see more [I]quality[/I] in the representation of minorities in games, not just more quantity. I just don't buy this view that games are uniquely awful amongst media.
Everyone knows people go and watch How to Train your dragon because they are into dragons and not because of male protagonist.

On that note I've started digging through Patreon a bit.
Nothing [I]super[/I] interesting so far, but both Kramer and Anthropy pay some people who also criticise video games.
I haven't yet checked if they wrote about their specific games though.

I've noticed that too. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, either.
Bane's methods were completely nuts, yes, but the stuff he was fighting for kinda made sense.
But I don't think the "other side" is Batman.
