honestly once I saw guy fawkes masks at wall street I had no idea what was going on with them.
Much like gamergate, anyone can represent anonymous. You could stick Guy Fawkes masks on zoo animals and say they represented anonymous.
Though sticking them on monkeys would be pretty accurate.
Did anyone see Jimmy Wales' post on the gamergate talk page? It was a bit ago now but I didn't see it posted here
[Context: anti-GG editors downplaying GameJournoPros, saying that the idea that there was collusion was debunked etc]
The criticisms were not "debunked" but "denied". "Debunked" is a success verb that implies more than simple denial. Having looked at the leaked emails, I would say that the allegations of collusion are largely and obviously true. So there's not really any justification for us to go further than "denied".--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:39, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
That's incredibly superficial, but at least it's not super-biased (which is somewhat impressive considering it seems to only use media coverage as sources).

Honestly this is my favorite article to come out of the Gamergate issue so far. The author is clear that he doesn't like Gamergate, but his reaction is sensible and open. When he says 'divide and conquer', it's not really in a malicious or manipulative sense, because he's really talking about appeasing the moderates that make up the majority of the movement.
A Slate writer is sincerely suggesting pulling back on the vitriol, taking ownership of journalistic misdoings, taking Gawker to task for its bullshit, and offering total forgiveness to people who are satisfied by this outcome and leave the movement. Honestly, as consumers, what more could we ask for?
I never really considered myself a Gamergater but if his recommendations came to pass I'd call the battle won and be done with it.

Compare that to the recent Salon article, TotalBiscuit's response on soundcloud and the salon author's twitter response and you'll probably get a pretty good idea as to why this thing blew up like it did.
Salon writes a shit article full of inaccuracies
TB, the guy that leaked the discussed issue in the first place surrounding SoW makes corrections and tries to clarify how paid adverts on YouTube work
Salon writer flipped shit, and starts attacking TB, his audience, and all the ecelebs associated with GG all while revealing his incompetence and refusing to own up to his mistakes.
I don't buy a lot of the tinfoil, but watching an asshole in some position of power try to strong arm everyone by their assumed 'authority' pisses me off.

Wait, where did Salon flip out?
The problem is, how can a movement that lists Breitbart as its only trusted source of general news sit there and claim they care about journalistic integrity?

Breitbart isn't our source of journalism. Milo is. I thought we explained this to you in detail over and over.
Report and move on. This is legit trolling at this point.

Dude, we've been over this like a million times. This idea of "guilty by association" is bullshit.
Yes, Breitbart is in general a pretty terrible site; it's horribly biased and shit like that.
HOWEVER, their articles on GG are well resarched and sourced. So, since nobody else wants to actually do the whole "journalist" thing other than Breitbart, then we will use those specific articles.
Nothing else.
And when this is over with, Breitbart will be left in the dust.
Hell, it's kinda hilarious how a non-gamer, extremely conservative site like Breitbart is actually capable of providing better coverage of this whole shitfest than any of the ACTUAL gaming news sites.
Troll culture has ruined the internet the past 4 or so years
Since I've been heavily involved in internet communities since 1999, I have witnessed a transition from the friendly-with-playful banter to the outright trolly death threat environment the online world has become. No, it hasn't always been this way online. As more people become connected the more people want to stand out, be heard, or be assholes
This whole gamergate thing really has cast a spotlight on the true nature of the online world, words without actions, actions from words, all categorized under the extremely vague hashtag.
Without a face-to-face interaction people really do say their worse to one another. It's almost like we have forgotten there is someone else on the other side. How much father until we're all just mindless floating hastags spewing shit at one another? I say at least in this gamergate debate we're already there

IMO social media did this, there's too much room for the worst of people be connected and be heard- when normally those people were simply removed and communities kept to themselves, now they can get massive attention for just saying a few words and speak for an entire group without consent and with anonymity.
The fact that journalism is now considered blogging makes this worse, so that dramatic incidents can seem more noteworthy then they truly are.

Since the FP review group fell flat on it's face, I have been starting a side project of magazine/website gaming/entertainment reviews. If you want to write reviews for videogames or anything related. pm me, email me or whatever. (Articles are edited by an editor before release.) Currently running wordpress/indesign. P.S - this is about writing fair, honest reviews and having fun in the process!

Things certainly have gotten worse than the 90's, but even then hate was being spewed. The only difference was that getting your own voice heard took more work than today, where any idiot can post his shit for others to read it. Certain elements of social media have made this considerably worse (Twtter...) but they are not the only ones to blame.
No I feel the true blame lies with the internet's echo chambers. Everyone in their rush to prevent harrassment and allow people to easily cut off communication have created an era where we're all screaming but no one is being heard. It's fucking awful.

He doesn't, that's why hes banned. He only comes on the thread to post something anti-gg related, he doesn't actually read any of it. It'd be like one of us going onto an feminist form and posting an argument without previously reading any of the thread.
Someone took the retweet data from both sides of GamerGate and made a visual representation of it. "Big cluster is core GG, lower left anti-GG"

Amazing, anti-GG is a legitimate black (or in this case, blue) hole of stupidity

Companies actually do this to purposely sort out stupid and garbage reports. That opinion one is a bait, its so it goes into its own little section in the emails that no one gives a fuck about while the people who reported it think they did something.
This lets them take the more important ones more seriously and have them more focused on what the actual issue is.
"I'm pretty sure what Cernovich is doing is civil harassment in the state of California; and I feel badly about Quinn being harassed like this on my account." - idledillettante.
1. You are wrong. My conduct did not even close to the line of harassment in the state of California.
2. Nobody cares about how you feel.
Ms. idledillettante, your conduct is a criminal violation of Penal Code Section 148.5, which makes it a crime to file a false police report. I would suggest you retain a criminal defense attorney to help you withdraw your report to avoid criminal liability.
