Wow. I honestly expected better from the ABC here in Australia: https://archive.today/PBUwy
Read the comments, the backlash is fucking hilarious. :v:
Question: Who the fuck is Mattie Brice? Haven't really seen her name mentioned, but apparently she got fired from somewhere. Polygon? (also, this is one of the most pretentious statements anyone could ever make)
She's fairly central to the Patreon mesh: [t]https://i.imgur.com/YSik36y.png[/t] IIrc she's the one with [del]the vague shady-looking feminist something[/del] no, just Games Criticism. I haven't looked that thoroughly into her but maybe I should. [editline]4th September 2014[/editline]
Someone that has a Patreon that gives money to random people nobody knows like Maya Felix Kramer, Jenn Frank. And gives criticism on games.
She [del]also[/del] receives money from a lot of people involved in this.
This man is fucking golden. He hates gays and thinks trans folks should be put down fyi. [editline]4th September 2014[/editline] i have never loved such a disgusting human being more in my entire life than i do now
We really, really don't need people like him though. Also:
this is bullshit. people are smarter than this and journalistic integrity is a big ticket issue especially with people like murdoch around (as long as you're not under his thumb, in which case, nothing to see here guys...)
Seeing what ABC Australia just reported, doesn't seem like it unfortunately! We also had this kind of shit on the Guardian, but that got solved out.
Link?
Posted a few posts up. https://archive.today/PBUwy
I don't know what to say.
This is the article that broke in Australia, forgive me if its late. It was written 5 or 6 days ago so it's probably been posted already http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/games/feminist-game-critic-driven-from-home-by-disturbing-online-threats-20140829-109t2y.html Sydney Morning Herald is one of Australia's most popular publications so...Yeah. posted. You'll notice the article is not written with any sort of objectivity in mind
She was ousted and fired because she was promoting games of people she had relationships with (close friends, etc). Journalistic integrity and all that. Honestly deserved it and she got what was coming to her.
That's a shame. I actually kind of liked her writing.
I love the suggestion that Burch thinks Zoë being called the new Phil Fish is particularly insulting.
And misogynistic, somehow.

I kinda want the cycle to restart so it is like "Look at that loser with the video games" again. But at the same time I don't.
I kinda want the cycle to restart so it is like "Look at that loser with the video games" again. But at the same time I don't.
You know if that happens everyone in this industry will be out of a job.
I really can't see that happening. I mean, shit, "League of Legends players are all gay" became a meme in brazillian internet culture and literally nobody gives half a shit. School Shootings happened, media blamed video games for it, soccer moms were all up in arms, still, people kept playing video games. "Gamers are misogynistic little shits that hound up girls" will end up being dismissed as "its just boys being boys" by most people [sp]protip: this is not cool[/sp] or "fucking internet/nerds/etc at it again". The only people who would be shaken up by this are soccer moms and people that are so morally fucked up that they constantly need a pat in the back reassuring them of their 'righteousness'. [sp]and this one last group is already in action! hint hint[/sp]
I kinda want the cycle to restart so it is like "Look at that loser with the video games" again. But at the same time I don't.
I don't know. It seems that nothing brings the gaming community together better than a good controversy. I feel like after this everyone will be even more tightly knit together and more critical of bullshit.
I don't know. It seems that nothing brings the gaming community together better than a good controversy. I feel like after this everyone will be even more tightly knit together and more critical of bullshit.
I actually agree. I think the gaming community is starting to get very tired of the bullshit found within the industry, and this entire issue is going to change the way gamers approach gaming journalism. Not to mention, GamerGate has started a precedent where journalists caught playing dirty pool are kicked out of their publications. So journos already know that they aren't invincible from their critics: now, they need to keep their nose clean, or they face getting let go under pressure from readers and advertisers. That's an enormous power that readers have, which previously didn't "exist" (or rather, we weren't particularly aware of). Definitely feel that gamers are going to be much more critical of writers, and much more likely to call out bullshit when they see it (and do so as a group).
It seems that Sarkeesian is one of the few people somewhat related to this who actually have a sane online privacy policy: I also figured out how to attach images directly to entities, the graph is now a lot more orderly. It's also a lot more convoluted at the same time due to added links creating a few crossing loops.

Up until now, you basically got a job and stayed on no matter what you wrote, or what your motivations were. Now, we're seeing these people who aren't great journalists being fired because, as it happens, their work isn't worth being published. That's an interesting change, and it's happening almost everywhere, not just in gaming journalism. Although, I will say, gaming journalism is adapting to the new media environment faster than most other subsets, which is commendable... if brash. Not a huge fan of the way the angry minority's handling this, though... It's never right to insult, threaten, or otherwise harass anyone, no matter who they are or what they do.
I posted that video from Boogie on my tumblr and facebook.
I don't know if this has already been posted, but TFYC just sent everyone to the burn ward: http://thefineyoungcapitalists.tumblr.com/post/96578864050/on-apologizing-for-getting-punched-in-the-face
[t]https://i.imgur.com/a1op37I.png[/t] There are a lot of things I can't really check out all by myself, if you want to help you can grab the graph using BitTorrent Sync at BW77N2273GZJUTZTNL4DXFOFVSAB34LR7 (read-only). To open the file you only have to install Maltego Community Edition, the entities can be added to your palette by importing from the graph file. You can still import the CaseFile entities too though, they could be helpful.

Sidenote: I find the name "The Fine Young Capitalists" odd and off-putting.
https://archive.today/bIgZ5
To be honest, some of the shit happening to developers is abhorrent like the people sending death threats over CoD sniper scope changes and the like. What they're probably going to talk about instead is all of this and paint it like that.
Every day I see more and more people in SJ tell ZQ fans: stop railing on TFYC and give them a break. True, they're not perfect. But they really do care about bringing (intersectionally marginalized) women into video gaming. You know, I've seen charities 10x more problematic than TFYC get thousands from feminists, so these TFUC detractors should be upfront about the HISTORY of problematic charities and feminism before they call TFYC donations "blood money."
I always knew the good old Hungarian game magazine I used to read for the better part of a decade was rightfully regarded among he best gaming publications I have read in my time. Their website mentioned the Zoe Quinn shebang in a "Top 5 most embarassing scandals in the videogame press" artcle today, and stuck to the facts and nothing else
Yep that's Anthony Burch
An actual news site decided to do a cursory glance over the issue.
#GamerGate: Misogyny or corruption in the gaming community? Twitter users debate attitudes towards women and gamers. Criticism of video games and gaming culture, for misogyny and other issues, is commonplace. But a counter trend alleging corruption and condescension in gaming media is now spreading through the hashtag #GamerGate (link is external). The hashtag has been used (link is external) more than 189,000 times, as members of the gaming community debate what they call snobby attitudes of gaming journalists towards players.
http://stream.aljazeera.com/story/201409032102-0024126

Ever. (Tumblr support please hurry up fixing my account, so that I can follow them already. Their website really doesn't like email addresses that contain a + it seems.) Somewhat relatedly, Matt of TFYC was on a podcast:

It starts really slow but gets interesting the more he talks towards the end.
