Perhaps he subscribes to the logic that since a lot of straight white dudes like Fight Club, or even outright miss the point of it criticising masculinity, the movie has failed, because obviously something's worth is solely decided by the people who like it.

He is technically correct, they are "critique of societal emasculation" and "critique of consumer culture" respectively. I wonder if I can make a living doing that, picking two arbitrary things are not a third thing, and complaining about it.

Even though American Psycho is primarily about yuppie culture. A part of it happens to be about the misogyny in business environments but that's not what the sole focus was at all.

I think it's mostly Tyler's behaviour, as he encompassed how a 'macho' person would/should act according to the MC, which then grows increasingly dangerous as he gains more and more traction.

American Psycho and Fight Club are both material that is thoroughly covered for study and critique. By using those two and making random claims, he thinks he can actually tie himself to them in some meaningful way and it will in turn make him look smarter and more important.

That's not homoerotic actually. Not to make this about something that it's not, but that scene is more about being independent than co-dependent on a man. Fight Club has plenty of homoerotic overtones, but that scene is about specifically being able to deal with life as an individual, as much of the book/movie is about.
