They don't have the luxury of not taking g it seriously, as if they were to wave it off as fake when something is really happening then people may die. So they have to respond to it as a real threat. And unfortunately sometimes people end up in a bad position with the police in an equally bad one, and it ends up with someone accidentally getting shot.
