They knew how it worked and that it blocked anyone even remotely affiliated to gamergate (the official description didn't mention any of that, claiming the list blocked some of the worst offenders of online harrassment, but as that facebook screencap shows they were perfectly aware of what it actually did). After they realized that they just kicked a beehive full of very angry defamation and blacklisting lawsuits they decided to cover their ass by pointing out the list was third party and they had nothing to do with it. Right now their official statement is that the tool was "imperfect" and that they're removing it "for now".
