Your interpretation is different to mine. The word "potential" implies that all men have it within themselves to be rapists.
Am I really the only person who thinks he didn't deserve shit for this? All he said is that with public perceptions being what they are (some men commit public rape against total strangers), if you're a man and you're alone in an elevator with a woman you should be aware that she may feel threatened. It's not saying all men commit rape and you better restrain yourself, it's just saying don't be creepy in a situation where you may already be perceived as threatening for reasons outside your control.
Men also get attacked by other men, far more often than men rape women. this doesn't mean when I get on an elevator with an otherwise normal seeming dude, that I'm cocking my fist and getting ready for a fight. It's stupid, its fear mongering and it only serves to create further division between the genders that the internet has brought on full steam. Besides what the fuck is being creepy? I dont know about you, but I think telling people they have to be uber self-conscious of their behavior just on the off chance a woman feels threatened by their mere presence, is fucking creepy. How the fuck do you expect any men to be on board with your shit when you're constantly treating them like they are, at best, a potential rapist at any given time? Is it any wonder then why there is massively growing popularity in reactionary movements like MGTOW?

It's a sad fact. If you're in an elevator, you do need to be aware that, as a muslim, you *are* a potential suicide bomber. Don't be creepy.
Same logic of perceived threat, but now it's an incredibly bigoted statement.
Same logic of perceived threat, but now it's an incredibly bigoted statement.
Right, if you're a Muslim you should be aware that there's no visual difference between an innocent Muslim and a jihadist suicide bomber, and consequently doing something like joking about hijacking in an airport is a really bad idea. At least, that's how I would read it, and now that you guys have explained it I see how you would view it differently. We're getting hung up on semantics. I interpreted 'potential' to mean that no outside observer can tell if you're a rapist, so a vulnerable woman in an elevator might justifiably feel on edge even if you're totally innocent. It seems that a lot of people interpreted 'potential' as 'latent in all men', which I understand, but I don't think was the intent. It was definitely poorly-worded, but I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. As ridiculous as Sterling can be, it seems even more ridiculous to assume he meant that all men are rape-happy and need to control themselves. Sorry for dragging this off-topic. You guys are alright, I just think people read too much into individual tweets. Twitter as we all know is a terrible medium for conveying anything beyond boilerplate statements, and raking someone over the coals for something they said one time years ago always seems to me like clutching at straws.
Am I really the only person who thinks he didn't deserve shit for this? It implies that women are so weak to be threatened by men for just standing around. Hardly can get any more sexist than that. 2. The idea that, because I am a man, I should go out of my way to "not look threatening" is also ridiculous. It's the equivalent of saying that as a black man I should try to avoid going in dark alleys because people could assume I'm going to mug them. People with prejudices are the one to need to work them out, I'm not the one who should conform to your sexist/racist thinking. As usual SJWs put hurt feelings over personal freedom.
Hopefully I can ask about this in this thread even though it is more about corruption in game journalism, if not then I'm sorry if it's a bit off-topic and I'll snip this post. Anyways, I'm working on a school project where I will write about sexism and hate towards women in the gaming culture. It would be great if I could get some good videos or materials that I can use as sources, stuff about GamerGate and so on (what GamerGate is, how it all started, etc). I'm asking this here since I think a lot of you that visit this thread know quite a lot about this whole thing, and I am personally having a hard time finding any good informative explanations anywhere. I saw the videos in the OP but 2 of the 3 were removed from the looks of it.
Difficult topic. Almost all of this is actually really poorly researched, so you'll have a hard time finding good sources that don't generalise from a small/openly biased sample or were written with an agenda in mind. (Not to mention it's an ongoing issue.) I think the only part that's more or less confirmed is that the games themselves don't affect the issue in any significant way (which is one of the reasons the Feminist Frequency stuff is so ridiculous). Beyond that it's sociology and that's an incredibly difficult science.
I interpreted 'potential' to mean that no outside observer can tell if you're a rapist,
There's no way for an outside observer to tell if a woman is browsing her purse for her phone or a knife so all women browsing their purse should be treated as if they are a mass murderer.
"Muslim Gamer finds inclusivness in gaming just to be compared to ISIS" http://gamergate.me/2014/12/struggle-of-the-pen/ Zoe Quinn attempted to talk about "ethics in games journalism", but ended up not talking about ethics (Sometimes, she did get it write and techraptor fixed it!) : Response post by a professional mental help therapist (unverified, but truthful nonetheless) https://medium.com/@cainejw/a-welcoming-response-on-quinns-joining-of-gamergate-4fb20f7c7e91
The rest of your laundry list here is not about ethics. Allegations against others are not unethical unless the author knew they were untrue. Neither is, by the way, disagreeing with Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, or Brianna Wu. Neither is liking the RalphRetort. Neither is voting your game poorly on MetaCritic. All of these things are completely ethical behaviors. They may not be too polite, but they are all ethical.
BTW, it's VERY interesting to see what others thinks, they think were whitewashing wikipedia articles, that we have "evil administrators inside wikipedia," our that our outlets are corrupt... etc. [editline]a[/editline] P.S, to my earlier Jim Sterling post, I had posted the 3 year ago tweet to justify my statement that he was a hypocrite who is willing to change sides at any point he feels he is going to get a larger audience, for his own needs. Hes only trying to keep his career alive, purposely trying to start controversies with shitty dev's so he gets coverage, etc.
dev @pixelgoth's kickstarter fails, donates all kickstarter funds to femfreq.
surely this has to be illegal? surely the law will get involved?
referring to this tweet of his
I really, really don't like Jim but I'm pretty sure that's a joke tweet.
surely this has to be illegal? surely the law will get involved?
She owes the goverment a lot in taxes from the Kickstarter. She is fucked.
I'm not sure if it's illegal but it's definitely against kickstarter's policy. They added a while ago that if you fail to deliver the finished product you have to refund whatever's left of the money. If they'll actually do anything about it remains to be seen.
surely this has to be illegal? surely the law will get involved?
If she really did use the Kickstarter money for that then yes, it's clearly fraud. If she didn't make a good-faith effort to complete the project, then that breaks Kickstarter's ToS and backers sue for reimbursement that way. I really want to see the full receipts she posted on Twitter though, the part I saw so far didn't show the date. [editline]3rd December 2014[/editline]
She owes the goverment a lot in taxes from the Kickstarter. She is fucked.
Right that too. The mentioned IRS debt so she definitely admitted being charitable while not paying off an obligation like that. Totally illegal no matter how you look at it. [editline]3rd December 2014[/editline]
[...] http://archive.today/mqRQl <= provided their own proof! thanks! [...]
Ah, there it is: Which means she donated at least a thousand dollars while in debt. I have little doubt she'll get sued by the government if people point it out to the IRS.
The IRS does not fuck around when it comes to taxes. If the detect even the slightest hint of an anomaly when in regards to taxes, they will crack down on someone bigtime. Unless a miracle happens, the IRS is going to ream her.
I find it bizarre that some of the more extreme anti-GG people are only a step or two away from 'sovereign citizen' levels of silliness. I can hardly say I trust the government, but donating the remaining funds from a Kickstarter to a (dodgy) charity rather than trying to pay off your debt?
There were quite a few articles mentioning Gamergate as harassment movement in response to the new Twitter reporting tools btw, like Huffington Post's "#GamerGate Harasses Brianna Wu After She Tweets About Her Dead Dog" (but they actually managed to make it clear it's muddy and that Gamergate is far from homogeneous, as well as having 8chan screenshots showing people attacking Wu for using her dog's death for publicity). The Guardian published "Zoe Quinn: 'All Gamergate has done is ruin people's lives'" which... seems to be actually somewhat unbiased. Most it is about harassment because it's written around a Quinn interview, but apart from strongly pushing the "Sarkeesian is merely exploring video games" narrative they make it clear there's more to it and that Quinn just outright dismisses anything not relating to what she says. They also included

and (in the timeline at the bottom)
9 October 2014 Game developer Brianna Wu shares an image on Twitter which mocks #GamerGate. It is met with overwhelming negativity.
. No explicit mention but I think pretty much everyone would see that harassment happens both ways from that. Of course it would require reading past the headline and the "The first target of the controversial Gamergate campaign tells how death threats, hate mail and misogyny became the online smash of the summer" blurb. In more positive news, there's "#Gamergate Controversy Extends Beyond Computer Screen" which, while critical of all parties involved and also filed as opinion piece, most of all says the media is at fault. There's also this bit:
The media’s attempt to shift the blame succeeded in drawing in soapbox videogame feminist Anita Sarkeesian and the “Social Justice Warriors,” a self-proclaimed group of Internet users who (sometimes over-zealously) advocate equal representation of genders, races and sexes in entertainment media. While we know now that Quinn did have multiple affairs with gaming journalists, the damage had already been done to the Gamergate movement and resulted in it being painted as an attack by a collection of Internet aggressors. [...]
I already archived them but I used the normal links because none are technically (very) bad journalism. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of things much worse than GTA 5, and it's not like you can only hurt women in the game as well.
Women in the sex industry are 40 times more likely to be murdered by a man. WELL NO SHIT.
Women in the sex industry are 40 times more likely to be murdered by a man. WELL NO SHIT.
I understand you sentiment, but ideally, we shouldn't see such statistics. Then again, we don't live in an ideal world.

In the news (and "news" so there's also something to laugh at): The GamerGate Controversy and Twitter’s Response by one Adam Sandle User-submitted. It's a relatively balanced and fairly well-researched piece that only mentions Gamergate in passing, aside from the "articles" linked in the first paragraph that is. It correctly remarks the SJW blocklist and its creator have no clear association with Gamergate, but still says harassment is one of the latter's cornerstones, but says that the issue isn't something particular to it or even the Internet, but also completely disregards anything else about Gamergate. Apart from the one-sidedness there it's not bad journalism as far as I can tell. Probably around the same level as what Yiannopoulos writes, just with a feminist instead of a right-wing lens.
