Yeah, there has to be now. It would be a terrible irony (if not entirly unforseen) if this led to games crit. migrating to mainstream media outlets. I mean, film, lit, theatre etc. have all done so [I]ages[/I] ago. Sure, there are specialised publications but nowhere near the numbers of games sites.

The sites actually do fold and consequentially game journalists lose their job and, in absense of community, gamers lose their identity. Neither side wins.
I think we probably do have to wake up to the fact that there are too many games sites doing basically the same thing, but I hope it doesn't collapse the whole sector.

That pisses me off so much, not because I hate the walking dead or anything, I really really like that game, but because so many writers for games don't seem to realize the difference between a character who happens to be black or hispanic or gay ( walking dead ), and someone who's entire shtick is just " they're black " or " they're gay " or " they're a woman ".

I don't pay much attention to video game writing, but in the writing communities I visit, one of the more common questions are variations on "How do I write a female/PoC/gay character?"
It's both infuriating and amazing that so many people have to be [I]told[/I] that these aren't people's defining features, and it's obviously something that video games struggle with.
Granted, I generally expect writers who've been hired as such to actually know how to write a feckin' character. Maybe I'm just expecting too much.

The thing is characters from those groups DO have their quirks usually. Its just that in videogames they usually fall back on to stereotypes/massive exaggerations of those traits. Eg; lesbians are represented butch as fuck and are basically a tomboy.
Look at a game like borderlands where characters like Moxy, Tiny Tina, Roland and handsome jack. Moxy is ~super slut~, tiny tina is your stereotypical annoying brat, roland is BLACK MILITARY MAN FALL IN SOLDIER and handsome jack is basically "white rich guy and that means he's the antagonist". None of these characters (except maybe Roland) go beyond these simple stereotypes.
Then look at the walking dead, especially the protagonists in S1 and S2.

Those quirks are generally inventions of media.
Obviously, there are some pretty major differences in speech between certain groups, but I'd say that's as far as it goes.

That's a pretty closed statement, there. Walking Dead is good but lets not pretend it invented the idea of well constructed characters.
There are plenty of games with very well constructed characters. You have to remember that more than anything, open world characters are gonna be different from linear world characters.
One has the ability to be easily constructed while the other gets dragged up and down the map.
New Vegas has fantastically designed characters, as does Uncharted. Sly Cooper has fantastic characters as does Ratchet and Clank.
We do a severe disservice by just remembering what has recently been hailed as 'fantastically written characters'.
I was going to cite Joshua Graham from New Vegas as a great example of a character. Andrew Ryan, James Sunderland, Captain Walker from Spec Ops, Walking Dead did not suddenly bring forth well written video gaems, it's been happening since the 90's

/v/ also has a lot of threads closed due to people making three threads about the same thing, and a lot more people post stupid bullshit in those threads.
while there are less posts on fp in this thread, the posts that are made are, on average, of higher quality and far more informative than an average /v/ post.
