I also like to think that they know their ideology is too twisted and convoluted to stand up on its own, and needs censorship to prop it up, but I don't think they're that self-aware

Gamergate was accused of harassing a depressed person to being suicidal. The reality was a troll / Anti GG member did it and had Gamergate blamed for it.

That would require financial investment/actually being part of the target demographic of people who play games at all.
