And while I think Gone Home is a highly overrated game I frankly couldn't care less about it. I don't go on an internet rampage if someone calls it their game of the year. I consider myself part of the silent majority. Those who can't be arsed to join endless internet debates. I do read an article and if it's good I might drop a like and if it's bad I shrug my shoulders and move on. Gaming is part of my personality. It is my hobby. It doesn't define my entire existence, but it is a big part of my life. Not too many years ago, gamers in Germany (like in most other countries), have been repeatedly attacked by mainstream media. Any school shooting has been somehow linked to Counterstrike. And then of course there were the other social stigmas. Nerds were smelly and had the social competence of the Berlin Wall. But like I said, over the years that changed. Anyone can be a gamer now. And of course like any other subculture we make fun of each other. "PC Master Race", "Console Peasant", "Casual Gamer". They're the equivalent of, say, football clubs. Sure, there may be some who can't distinguish between friendly banter and pure insults. But if you break it down, they all love the same thing. Football. So all of this happens. And then Gamergate. First off, I heavily dislike the way mainstream media (i.e. BBC) handled Zoe Quinn. There are clear indicators that she heavily mentally abused her ex during their relationship. But of course since the internet is a place where it's the easiest for idiots to scream the loudest and be heard, harassment happened. Honestly, nobody should be harassed and I'm more than disgusted that apparently this still needs to be said. None of this actually mattered to me but then the articles dropped and that's when I decided to actively participate in this debate. Because certain writers and journalists pushed the same narrative, just with a few minor changes, that gamers are still the worst people walking on earth. I'm particularly talking about Leigh Alexander's article that has been spread by news outlets like there's no tomorrow. Over the last two or three decades gaming became something that anyone can enjoy and she, along with other writers, decided to release borderline hate-speech. When I first read that article I was sitting in my chair, depressed. Yes, gamers have been repeatedly treated like shit from mainstream media but she was a writer for a gaming website, even if it's "only for developers". That was supposed to be the kind of media that we could look up to! Which makes it even more ridiculous that recently people started to whitewash Leigh's article by calling it "pro-gamer." It wasn't. Its message wasn't "The Gamer is dead, long live the gamer!", it was "Gamers are dead. Deal with it, nerds." And that's when I decided to get some people from Facepunch and have a Google Hangout where we talk about stuff that's happening in GamerGate. Somewhat 10 years ago when TV ripped my hobby apart, saying that video games cause real world violence I couldn't do that. I had to witness these accusations over and over again while not being able to voice my own opinion. And now I can and I decide to do so. I don't mean going on Twitter to harass people or generally create a toxic environment somewhere else on the internet. What I do mean is talking to people in a place where others are willing to listen to my arguments and where I am able to hear their point of view. However, at this very moment it seems impossible. You can't have any discussion without people questioning your gender, sexual orientation, political leaning or views on minorities. Like I said, this is a result of simply dismissing legit concerns of your audience by practically slapping them in the face and telling them to fuck off. Thank you for your time. I just want you to understand that there are many different nuances, especially to "pro-GG" (even if I consider myself neutral at this point). I would love to have you on an episode of "Facepunching GamerGate", that's what my podcast is called, and talk with you about it, but I understand if you don't have the time for it.
