I'm going to say this: Patreon is cancer.

One person I'm following on twitter does two comics a week, and they're just getting over $100 a month through patreon.

The "cancerous" portion comes from the fact that the systems the sites set up can be easy to abuse (i.e. scam people out of their money) if you can do P.R. well but these people are of the minority. If these people composed the vast majority of users and Kickstarter and IndieGoGo did little to nothing about it then yes your statement would be more valid.

Patreon is a nice idea. It's a good way for fans to support their favorite artists without being forced into funding a kick starter. The problem is that these indie patreon networks basically exist so industry workers can throw money at each other for PR perks. The end result is various journalists directly funding the developers they're reporting on. Also, most of these patreons are based around simple things like grocery shopping and paying the rent. Which is a little overwhelming when almost everyone is doing it in the scene. Patreon is suppose to be about funding content makers and supporting their work via money. Instead, the indie journos/devs are basically asking each other to pay the rent. Which means there's no guarantee that your patronage will even lead to a game being developed. Its a crap shoot, its very hard to sniff out the good and bad usage.

I thought a_girl_irl was just part of the gang hounding the kid because the kid believed all topics can be covered in comedy or something like that and a_girl_irl didn't take too kindly to that to put it lightly. Kind of reminds me of tumblr user "misandry-mermaid" (who coincidentally Max occasionally reblogs from) who publicly doxxed several people because apparently they sent her rape threats via anon asks [B]but the people she doxxed ended up being not the real people and were just random innocent people and supposedly it's a prank from /pol/ or something.[/B] *The bold parts are rumor.
