"I've seen over 200 shows"
Okay. If he's seen over "200" shows, then he should be able to admit that most anime is full of gore and/or tits. Other people say this as well, not just me.
I wouldn't say gore (maybe in the 90s but less today) but yea most anime have some form of fanservice. Its a cultural thing. I hear it has something to do with japanese couples having very little sex and finding quicker ways to release themselves.
I think your mindset is trapped in the late 80's to early 90's (period may be a bit off) when all there was a huge boom in ultra violent anime with tits and gore. Nowadays, the trend had ditched most of the ultra violence and kept the fanservice in mostly sexist portrayals of subservient women (adapted from dating sims). Why? Because it sells. But just like things like Transformers is made to sell using it as a good representation of the state of a medium is a silly exercise in pessimism.
I wouldn't say the majority of anime is overencumbered by T&A, especially if you include things like children's shows which Japan also considers anime (over there they call Tom and Jerry an anime); which goes back to how broad the genre is. Maybe I've just become desensitised but whenever there is an oddly proportioned female in a show it just doesn't bother me that much; I can just filter it out unless the show tries to rub it in my face. I avoid shows that are likely to offend me.
Maybe I shouldn't say most anime is that way, but a pretty good amount. Even in today, some anime is still that way. And by some I don't mean an extremely minor percentage like you guys are thinking.
what exactly do you mean by, "more westernized"? and how does that make them more or less respectable?
this

is about as japanese as you can get, and yet is probably more respectable than say, Mad Bull 34
I think you'd agree that the image you posted is not typical of anime so I'm not entirely sure how its relevant. The more western, the less bug eyed, overly sexualized, and the more their personalities convene to the western social standard.
Being more westernized makes it more respectable in the west. Do I have to elaborate on the tendency of people to not like things that are foreign and weird seeming?
I've only liked(seen) a few anime shows (Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, FLCL) and a few movies (Memories, Satoshi Kon movies, classics by Miyazaki, Akira, Tekkonkinkreet). While they are all anime, I'd hardly consider them to be typical. Would that sentiment be correct? When I think of typical anime, three pictures come to mind: the first is adventure/action pandering to kids, the second is the kind of show people get their waifus from(not even sure what these are like), and the last is childish drama with randomness(high schools girls and shit). Correct me if I'm wrong in this stereotype.
Of course, out of a whole bunch of shows some will be good and fewer will be great. This holds with all mediums. (You've managed to avoid the throw-away stuff). And rather than consider what the "typical" anime is, it'd be a better classification to look at targetted demographics. Is the show trying to sell toys to kids? Or figurines of girls to 20-something fans?
Sometimes, if you're lucky, someone will make something for mature adults who appreciate a good story.
I've loved anime since I was a kid and I really don't see why some people hate it. I mean, yes, it isn't for everyone, the animation is usually pretty jerky because it has less frames per second than the vast majority of Western animation, because it's Japanese there are usually a lot of in-jokes which make no sense in dubs or aspects of culture Westerners don't get, etc.
But then I see people hating on it just because the fans are dumb or just because it's Japanese. Yeah, most of the fans are teenagers, screaming girls, yaoi/yuri obsessives, annoying, etc. but nearly everything has that. Look at any group of people who're a fan of some form of media, and you'll see there's always an annoying part of it.
While I can't say I like anime in the slightest, there are two reasons I'm pushed off of it.
This "Haruhi" thing that completely overtook another forum I was on and made most of the people dithering idiots who used to be respectable people was one. The second is this Hetalia bull shit that makes me seriously worried for some people. And that show isn't even funny. Or respectful.
So, you hate the vast entirety of anime because of 2 shows?
Are you kidding me?
Usually it comes down to the differences between cultures, and the fact that a lot of people are xenophobic. More on that later (I gotta sleep, 12pm in Asia now)
There's a general dislike to most things that come accross to me as unwarranted but people will always be like that, in the end it's all down to opinion and how people choose to express their hatred accross the internet, some people are aggressive about it whereas others happen to be nice about it, I personally find anime to be fine, the ones I've watched I couldn't see anything wrong with.
I pretty much unconditionally disliked it until I watched a few good shows. ( Mostly due to the fact that a large part of the anime watching community [or at least the loud part] is a bunch of screaming autismal weaboos)
Don't really give a shit what other people think about it though.
Its not a hate crime to have an opinion.
Not everyone likes anime.
Its exactly the same as not liking Country music, or Rap music.
If I were to post about Garth Brooks, I would be met with just as much antagonism as anime posts.

Do you actually like Country, though? It would be a great honor to meet someone on Facepunch who likes something besides metal, rock, and/or dubstep.

Well, I listen to classical, folk, techno, DnB and electronica plus the former two you mentioned. I think most people listen to more than two genres.

It just seems everybody on Facepunch listens to either metal or electronic.

Generalizations are fun
Country is a travesty.
Only Anime I've ever really watched are studio Ghibli's stuff and I've loved every one I've seen so far.
Generalizations are fun
Generalizations are true.
Generalizations are true.
Haha, wow.
Generalizations are almost (pay attention to the almost) never true, because if one exception exists you're wrong.
"It just seems everybody on Facepunch listens to either metal or electronic. " - If one out of the I don't even know how many people registered to facepunch, you're wrong.
As for anime, just like with every other form of entertainment ever made, most of it is bad, though there are some gems.

Generalizations wouldn't be made if they "weren't true". Sure, some are just stupid. But that doesn't mean all of them except for a select few are true.
Generalizations are made out of ignorance. "I've seen three anime fans, so I know them all".

I am not saying people aren't allowed to dislike anime, people just seem to dislike it for no good reason. You don't see people hating all Movies, or all TV shows, or all Music, because there a few they didn't like.

The example I said about music isn't, though. Go to the Musician's Gig Room section sometime and tell me the majority of what they have there isn't electronic and metal.

the real question is, why do you care
the real question is, why do you care
I don't. That guy said I was generalizing when in reality I wasn't. So I had to prove my point that I wasn't just generalizing "out of ignorance". I honestly don't care what people listen to. I may not agree with what people like on Facepunch, but I'm not going to be an ass about it.

I grew up with it so its basically a part of me that I can't let go of. Although my favorite is Metal, Rock and, Dubstep.
But being a musician, I try to include all of forms of music to my repertoire so it probably isn't a surprise.

It's all just prejudice. The same, "I don't wanna look like that nerd." kind of stuff.

Ah. Cool, cool.
As a teenager-adult I've only watch three animes, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Death Note and Naruto/Naruto Shippuden.
I'm someone who is fond of good storys especially supernatural, spiritual stuff, and I believe that Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is one of the best storys I've seen. I'm also fanatic from all kind of spiritual science and mythology(I have books about mithology, phylosophy, alchemy, theology, demonology and all the other stuff), so the alchemy in FMA was amazing for me. In japa there is a lot of mithological culture, lot of people know about demons from japan and stuff and the good animes are the ones that not only have a great story, but give a new way of seing something. For example Naruto, it may be childish but the idea to control the flow of your chakra by hand signs makes a hole new way of seing the ninjas. And the idea of the Sharingan is one of the best ideas I've heart, hipnotism by sight, it's just amazing!
