Good anime used to be on Adult Swim, dunno what the fuck they have nowadays.
I've seen quite a bit of anime over the last 5-6 years of my life, starting in middle school. At first, I thought it was the most amazing shit ever because it had graphic violence and boobs. Now that I have grown older and my tastes have developed, I can see why most people hate it and why I'm starting to move away from it as well. Just like american cartoons and shows, very few anime shows are worth watching. Animation tends not to be as well done as well as shows like adventure time, fosters home, or friendship is magic. Characters are mostly cookie-cut and have no redeeming values. Stories tend to be filled with plot holes and filler.
Let's take "Asobi ni Iku yo!" for example. I just finished this show last night, regretting even starting it. The characters here are mostly the stereotypes of what you’ll see in a harem setting. You have Eris, the clumsy girl; Aoi, the shy girl who can’t seem to confess her love; and Manami, the tsundere girl. Of course, a harem wouldn’t be complete without its annoying male lead, but the anime barely stated facts about him. All I know is that he’s a pervert, stupid, and a anime otaku. The show is filled with plot holes, characters are never introduced properly, and the nudity is just a distraction. This is the type of garbage that gets a ton of attention over decent shows like Gintama.
Honestly, the best anime i ever watched was Cowboy Beebop.
It wasn't dumb, it didn't have outrageous characters, the story was interesting and the world they lived in was bright and vibrant in a dark, gloomy way. It established a good feeling of a "wild west" bounty hunter system within an expansive universe of human life in space after earth was destroyed. The music was brilliant and had an important connection to the episodes themselves.
And the art style was gorgeous and didn't have eyes larger than the host's brains.
I think the problem for a lot of people (including myself) is the fans, not the actual anime itself.

By any chance, did that show start with a socially awkward kid being late to school? I've always seen that in school-themed anime numerous times.
I don't really have a general opinion of it, especially considering I haven't seen that much. I quite liked Hellsing Ultimate and Elfen Lied. There was too much forced nudity in Elfen Lied, but I liked the themes and intense amount of gore. I also like Yu Yu Hakusho, partly for the nostalgic value of staying up to watch it on Adult Swim when I was younger. Really, I'm not sure a sweeping generalization makes sense for this style.

No, but judging from a conversation in the first episode he was a new student in his high school, close enough.
I think it's because when most people think of Anime they automatically think UGUUUUU SUPA KAWAII ^^. I'm not a fan of it myself, I watched the obligatory DBZ, YugiOh, Pokemon, Beyblade etc when I was younger, and Death Note a few years ago, but that's about the only anime I can actually enjoy watching, most of it makes me cringe.
I agree with "you don't watch one bad movie and then say all movies are bad".
Problem with anime in western countries is, I believe, twofold: Firstly it's different from western anime and a universally typical reaction to something different is apprehension and skepticism. This makes disappointment more easy to turn into dislike towards the medium in its entirety, especially considering anime is pretty easy to assemble in a category because of its aforementioned distinctness. The whole style of Asian media, from the way method the plot is revealed through the means which characters are portrayed to the way social cues are executed, is different than in western media (not just anime) and for someone unaware of this anime will come off as unfamiliar and weird.
Secondly, to be really honest, bad anime is pretty easy to stumble upon and the "good ones" are hard to find. There are of course several reasons for this, such as anime being very polarized in terms of target audience for a specific genre (there is a big difference between a kids anime and a seinen one, for instance), more so than western series (where popular series more tend to potentially appeal to pretty much every kind of person). A certain anime genre may require a certain mindset to enjoy. This again makes it easy to misstep and end up watching "crap" anime when the real problem is that you're not watching the right sort of anime for YOU.
Some is good, some is bad. Cowboy bebop & Studio Ghibli stuff are my favorites and i haven't really gotten the chance to watch much more. I watched the entire season of Cowboy Bebop in about 3 days and i absolutely loved it. The music, art-style, and the feel of the series really made it appealing to me. Anyone have any suggestions as to what i should watch next?

Baccano!

Thanks, they also have every episode dubbed on hulu! Looks like i'm going to be up all night......
I love anime, and if you have a problem with that - you can suck my dick.
Ghost in the shell innocence is one of the most thought provoking pieces of cinema i have ever seen
FLCL is also quite good. I started watching it on AS and then got interested and watched the entire series.
many of the popular ones i find are very badly written.
but the Miyazaki movies are all masterpieces because they break the mold with great writing and animation. i also loved Akira.
I tried to watch Elfen Lied as everyone and their mother told me it's great.
I'm all for a few exceptions to the anime rule, there's been some I've enjoyed immensely, but elfen lied wasn't among them. The protagonist is a psychotic retarded catgirl who can't understand how clothes work. P much every scene has her whipping her tits out in some form or another. I can't take that shit seriously when I know what the obvious target audience is.
People just need to try watching a good anime or two first before making an opinion. Don't judge simply on what you infer and assume all anime is UGUU~ KAWAII DE-GESO!

I liked it too, though it's most of a "love it or hate it" thing. My friend didn't like it.
most anime is moe shit or has an annoying, immature romance subplot that does nothing other than sidetrack things. lupin the 3rd and cowboy bebop were cool though
I don't really enjoy anime itself and don't exactly have a problem with it, but the larger portion of the anime fans are absolutely embarrassing and when they try to live with the entire Japanese culture they end up making fools of themselves. I still know some great people who are into anime, but you can't change that the annoying type will stand out a lot more than the quiet ones and people will end up stereotyping them all for something they enjoy watching occasionally.
I love anime, but these days I'm struggling to find some good, original ones.
I do have to address posts like these though:
Most anime is shit, that's all there is to it. There are a few good ones out there, but you have to dig through all the weaboo fandom crap to find them.

alot of anime is just pure shit, 99% of the time the plot is something that a 5 year old would write.
also, a common trait of anime is the lack of subtlety. everything is just too "in your face". there's no real artistic merit to it.
"Most" anime. "99%" anime. How on earth can you make these near absolute statements without watching at least half a dozen of them? I can list a bunch of anime that is generally considered good, both inside and out of the anime fanbase:
-Cowboy Bebop (mentioned a bazillion times)
-Fullmetal Alchemist (no moe, romance plots are minor)
-Evangelion (an anime you either love or hate, but definitely not for kids)
-Baccano! (one of the best dubbed anime ever, gritty, gory, and action-packed set in 1920s New York)
-Just about every film made by Studio Ghibli
-Ghost in the Shell, both seasons
-Nichijou (wonderful animation, orchestrated soundtrack, and a random sense of humor)
-Great Teacher Onizuka (the only real anime that can both make you laugh hysterically and go all sad in a single episode)
-Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (kinda stretching it here, can't really understand the film without watching the series, but it has stellar animation, and the only anime I know that uses Erik Satie's music)
-Wolf's Rain (thought it was going to be emo i love wolves kind of anime but it, along with Cowboy Bebop, is considered a hit outside of the anime fanbase)
-Trigun
So to answer the OP yes, I think the general dislike of anime on Facepunch is very unwarranted. The fanatical anime fans make the loudest noise, and many of the most popular current anime is pretty bad, and thus Facepunchers are going to be prone to generalizing the entire (or most of it, as people are putting it in this thread) genre and its fanbase.

I am a pretty stingy anime fan, and your list is spot on. Nichijou is one that a number of people haven't heard of, but it's unique sense of humor could attract a non-anime fan.
A lot of it depends on what you're watching coupled with your personal tastes.
Hating anime just because it's anime is a bit harsh.
Depends on where you look really. Some have really poor writing and story progression, and some don't. Some have really cheap, lackluster animation, and some don't.
I like anime but I understand why people don't.
Most of the hate is just bandwagoning though, it's pretty dumb.
I tend to dislike anime, but I happen to really like Gurren Lagann.
I can see why some people dont like it. The shows everyone knows about (Naruto, etc) arent all that good in my opinion, but quite a few shows that arent well known are excellent.
I used to hate it just because I thought it was primarily made of fighting shows and girls doing "cute" stuff. I watched Azumanga on a suggestion, and showed myself I was wrong. I enjoyed it, but I see why it wouldnt appeal to some people.

This isnt helping though.

First seven episodes of Gurren Lagann were the most amazing thing ever. The last three were pretty good too.

I forgot FLCL. I KNEW I was missing a good one :v I was going to add Full Metal Panic but its first season is meh, its second season is completely comedy (which isn't a bad thing), and only the third season nails it. I love the light novels of it, though.
