• Is the general Dislike of Anime unwarranted?
This is literally just rambling. Men can only like science fiction, males watching anime is the result of a leftist sexual agenda? ...What?
Not my problem if you cannot read my words.
Not my problem if you cannot read my words.
Oh no, I read them. They just don't make any sense and aren't grounded in reality.
Personally, I just dislike the drawing and general style of animes/mangas. I just don't dig the style in which characters are presented. Except for a few mangas that I found quite good. But I often associate Mangas/Animes with stupid memeshit and other fucked up pictures, which is a fault from my part. Besides I do not like the plots, although some are bloody brilliant. But there are many stupid ones.
What kind of anime/manga have you been exposed to? As you know there's a huge variation in style/plot/character design that largely depends on target demographic.
American TV is too stable, Anime breaks boundary's and actually have good stories.
I can agree with you on the lack of adult oriented animations in America. This doesn't apply to all western animations everywhere else though.
Probably has been said already, but I'm just going to get the point further across. There are dozens of good anime and manga. The infamy of it is mostly to blame on the wank mainstream anime dominating the media, and the people watching it giving the whole thing a bad name with their behaviour. I'm not afraid to state in public that I enjoy anime and manga greatly, liking various aspects of japanese culture as well. I just do not act like a "weaboo" tool generally, or if I get a rare urge to do so, keep that in companies related. You'll be surprised that not all anime is based around "uguu kawaii/harem" stuff. If anyone regards me as a hikikomori weaboo virgin after, woe on them for being ignorant. Breaking stereotypes here.

A friend always wanted to watch some animes with me. They were pretty mediocre. Also I went to a special Manga store, I picked up the most promising sounding books, they were pretty meh to me.

If you're still young and in school it may even change your perspective on a lot of shit, because the subject matter goes really deep into the social development process that is attending public school.
I do not want to get into manga, nor do I have and interest in it. I just like some themes that are being discussed in different mangas.
huge generalization. I tend to read reviews on anime before I watch
Anyone trying to go with an argument that anime is undetailed is horribly wrong for the most part. Sure, the lower quality stuff is worse in details and overall visuals, but that applies just as well to Western cartoons. Great example of anime detail taken seriously is stuff like Dead Leaves, Panty & Stocking and Tengen-Toppa Gurren Lagann. All three have pretty frigging neat details that you miss on the first time watching. Second time you start noticing them and start appreciating the work the animators have put into them.

But still it is just hegemony of such opinion to be broken.
Sorry to say, but that shit sucks
I think it has a lot to do with the combination of general "cheesiness" associated with foreign entertainment, bad translation, and unfitting culture trends. To an American, what we see in most Anime can be described as immature and sort of ridiculous, while in Japan, their views and intentions are probably much more playful and, well, ridiculous. No matter what anime I watch, I always have a sense of awkwardness while watching it. Even Cowboy Bebop and selected Miyazaki films make me feel this way.
People dislike anime because it's everywhere and you can't do anything about it. Ignoring it is not an option; you cannot escape. It's always there, no matter where you go. People dislike most of the other things such as bronies, Justin Bieber and the-newest-fad-of-that-time for the exact same reason.
So maybe people should dislike all movies and music because it's everywhere? Anime isn't a fad, there are a lot of different series from a lot of different genres. A certain anime might be a fad, but anime as a whole? Not really.
Whenever I see these I always see people mentioning the old classics. But there's plenty of good things this season or the last season which nobody seems to talk about. Like Steins;Gate, or Nisemonogatari, Usagi Drop, Persona 4 animation, Madoka Magica etc and plenty of other things I haven't mentioned. There's lots of good anime being made now, as well as lots of bad ones.

Many people who dislike anime tend to say that recent anime is shit and how it all used to be good many years ago. There was plenty of shit anime back then which is forgotten, and the only ones people are mentioning are the best ones. Just like today - there's plenty of shit anime, with good memorable ones too.
I recently picked Gurren Lagann and after watching it I was sad that it was a short saga. Now I hear that Death Note is good. I somehow look at anime in a generalized way since most animes try to "sell" themselves with fanservice characters, mostly giant-boobed females that behave too freely (read: like whores). Most likely that rule applies to Yoko from Gurren Lagann but her character was kinda developed and not left as a silly girl.
I dislike anime because most seem to rely a lot on sex appeal, either in the form of the obvious or the "someone is jerking it to this somewhere". That and there's a really stupid formula they all seem to follow. Why is it a staple for anime to have every female in existence have huge tits/paper thin waist/other ridiculous features? What purpose does it serve, at all? I mean, I appreciate the female form as much as the next guy, but I watch TV shows/movies/whatever for entertainment. If I want big tits I'll find porn. And not only that, but almost always the main character (if its a guy) is socially awkward to the point of stupidity, and yet every human being without dangly parts in a 4 mile radius practically throws themselves at them. Its like the whole "EVERY WOMEN IS A WHORE AND EVERY MAN IS SUBMISSIVE AND AWKWARD" is basically Japan's entire culture. Sure there are anime that don't fit the mold completely, but it seems 8/10 times it does. For example: NGE. The plot and premise to the show was really really good, but it was ruined by the fact that they made 13 YEAR OLD CHILDREN into WHORES. The sexual humor is just so god awful it ruins the entire fucking series.

What general dislike? A bunch of Americans who can't deal with stuff outside their own culture cry over anime, and sadly they're a pretty vocal minority here on Facepunch.
Where can I watch the English dub of Death Note? Hulu only has subbed as far as I saw.
The only anime I've ever enjoyed would have to be Cowboy Bebop.
hahaha what I'm not gonna go into plot details here because spoilers but there is a legitimate reason Asuka acts like she does (and she doesn't act like a whore).
I know the details you are thinking of, and no, it doesn't justify it. And she most certainly acts like a whore, or at least someone who doesn't understand the concept of decency what so ever. Everyone in that series acts amazingly stupid toward anything sexual. Its either exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness, or in the case of Shinji, "FEMALE WHAT DO".
The only anime I hate is any anime that consists of people staring at each other the entire time.
I can completely understand the general attitude of dislike towards anime, as there are tons of shows of which only a few are really well done. Anime, like most animated types of shows, tends to have a sillier tone to it, sometimes clashing with the desired atmosphere of the show. Probably the worst aspect for me is the ear-rape voices in the original version of a lot of anime shows, especially coming from female characters.
I don't dislike it for the content really, I am not picky when it comes to shows/movies. One big thing I hate is how every one that loves it thinks they know everything about japan, or at least in my encounters that is is what I have found. Another thing is how some people pick up on that shit and try to act like the characters, they try to act cute or over react to random things. The biggest thing is the freaking hentai though, I will not say any more about it
I think japanese people can be weird as fuck. First of all, their porn is all censored. But then they are into stuff like vomit porn, different fetish's, tentacle rape, and the worst, incest. I like anime, but only some. A lot of anime are weird as fuck imo. But then again, different culture, different norms. Ones that I enjoy are: Cowboy Bebop Hellsing Code Geass Death Note Soul Eater Elfen Lied (Besides how his cousin wanted to be with him) Full Metal Panic Fooly Cooly (furi kuri) Melancholy of Haruhi There are also a number of ones i dont like.
Whenever somebody brings up anime, they always refer to the shitty ones they saw on adult swim or something. My favorite was Cowboy Bebop, Afro Samurai (it's over-sexual at points, but its Wu Tang meets anime) and Samurai Champloo. Dunno why nobody talks about Samurai Champloo though (it's pretty friggen great and made by the same people who made Cowboy Bebop.)
