I was going to make a steampowered low power PC at one point, I may still do it.
good luck with constant wattage and cooling :P
Steampunk is one of my most favourite fictional settings. Shame there isn't as much of it as like fantasy and science-fiction.
I've got one of these: http://www.wetanz.com/the-unnatural-selector-miniature-edition/from/brand Guess you could say its steam punk. They've also got a life sized version, but thats insanely expensive.
I can imagine a steampunk world. It would be a planet maybe about one third the size of Earth (which means 1/3 of the gravity) Where there would be a massive public transport system, preferably in the form of open-air trains(monorails?), on tracks either suspended from the air or built up from the ground. Airships would be widely popular because of the smaller planet and less gravity making helium or other very light gasses much more effective, and maybe because people wouldn't mind taking the extra time to enjoy the scenery along the way. There would also be a very small plane that would be a one-seater, for faster travel in cities and towns. Things would be built in a way that glorified all the clockwork and steel that went in to making them instead of trying to cover it up, it would be a world that wasn't meant to be safe, it was meant to be safe ENOUGH, where there weren't overprotective seals and locks on everything. and also everyone would where top hats, because top hats are awesome.
erm, 1/3 the size doesn't mean 1/3 the gravity. Also if you had 1/3rd of the gravity all the atmosphere would fly away.
http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/legiontank.html Proper "steampunk".
What are these "tank" things I keep hearing about? Is that the new name for a landship?
What are these "tank" things I keep hearing about? Is that the new name for a landship?
It appears so, my friend. oh sarsaparilla!, I'm out of mustache wax again!
I want a steam-powered clock.
You know, those flying airships would be most likely impossible. That's a more realistic one.
Depends. By the looks of things they're quite big. Like... possibly larger than the Hindenburg big. When you start getting up to sizes like the Hindenburg or larger simply extending the radius by a size as small as a metre gives you a hell of a lot more lift. Build a zep 300 metres long and 50 metres in diametre and you're looking at at about 619 tonnes of lift (working on the assumption that the ENTIRE envelope is filled with gas, which realistically it wouldn't be). Building with something such as duralumin would ensure that the support rings and other metal framework wouldn't be grossly massive and hence subtracting a large portion from from the total lift.
Holy shit look at this hat! I gonna want one for Christmas.

If you're interested in stories about it, the Mortal Enginens series is great, it's in the future where they've lost lots of tech and have gone back to gods and stuff. However there are airships, traction cities, steam guns and such.
I like the steampunk props people hand make. Not to parade around looking like a bitch in, but just for the joy of making something that looks freaking sweet.
Also, there I remember someone wrote a book about WW1, but steampunkish.
I think that'd be Leviathan [editline]09:59AM[/editline] also everyone go look at Keith Thompson's stuff http://www.keiththompsonart.com/
Woah, Keith Thompson is an amazing artist. A lot of that stuff was...really weird, but just as awesome.
http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/legiontank.html Proper "steampunk".
This is not steampunk. They are not powered by steam. It also doesn't fall into the Victorian-ish area with their design, which is mandatory for steampunk. This is called dieselpunk.
What can he do? He's looking the other way.
The giant steampunk octopus is my god.
My design technology project is based off the Steampunk design :v:
I really like steampunk (not all forms though, the term is rather broad). One of the playable civilizations in the RTS game Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends was solid steampunk, so you'd have massive steam cities, steam aircraft (da-Vinci-helicopters?), steam tanks, even steam-augmented foot soldiers with steampunk blackpowder rifles! Best pic I could find quickly: I really enjoyed that game...
These are all amazing pieces of artwork, but some aren't as steampunk-ish as others: http://coolvibe.com/tag/steampunk/ In fact, I would recommend the whole site for art in general.
