You're an exception bro. No one (today) is into The Doors unless their parents or some close friends are into them.
I'm sure they've heard of them before though.
Not true, The Doors are one of my favourate bands but my parents had nothing to do with it.
To put this in a broader perspective. If hypotheticaly would have gone to [random city nr.1] in asia and then you would hypotheticaly ask someone, who you think would know a little more about music than the average 12 year old kid, then hypotheticaly what would he say if you asked him about someone like the doors, the recently popular paramore or even rush, I think the asian man/woman you would be talking with would not know what or whom you would be talking about.
Why is this, you ask?
Beacuse of the difference in culture. Asia is a little world in it's own and something as simple as making bread might be different there.
If you desperatly need to know those born around 1996+ where all born with internet and TV and such basiclly in their hands.
And what would small children watch more than disney channel, nickelodeon and all that stuff? As we all know miley cirus, the jonas brother etc. etc. the devils work etc. came from disney channel and that is why the kiddies listen to such music.
I personally like a lot of different music, but basiclly nothing that could have come out of disney channel and almost no metal stuff.
This kid was basicly brainwashed in other words to like what he lieks. BUT, we are all being brainwashed when we are born and thats how we end up like we are.
You mentioned Jethro toll, and that you listened to him because of your father listening to him. I started to listen to rammstein a little bit because my dad always played their CD's when I was little, so naturally i think they are one of the biggest bands on earth, but most kids don't have a clue at all what rammstein is.
short version: Everyone have their own taste of what sounds best (and what smells best and what tastes best etc.etc. devil smells taste etc.) and most people get this sense of "goodness" from when they were young.
and of course you can develop your own style to and start liking death metal without any reason when all your friends and your family strictly listen to ambient sounds all day. (I think this is about biology, the part with genes and enviroment)
I don't think you should force your opinion of music onto others, though I'm suprised he hasn't even bothered looking into music.

Its for kids who want to act cool and say they got there Christmas presents early.
Reminds me of certain friends I have who are trying to convince me to like thrash metal even though it sucks ass balls.
distinction between people because of musical preference is such a dumb thing I don't even know where to start insulting you for doing it
Bro, just leave him alone. Then proceed to punch yourself, you need it.
You expected him to know Jethro Tull ? Wow.
How many people do you know really ? This happens all the fucking time. You get used to it.
stab him in the eyes
woah calm down there you big music fan
Grow up and learn to respect other people's tastes, however shitty they might be in your opinion.
because not knowing any one of the most influential rock bands in history means you have a different taste
wtf op is 12

He's a kid...
Why do you even have arguments with kids? How old are you?
overrated bands.
hahaha
no
A man in a Santa Claus suit goes on the stage in the ballpark and there are garbage bags of presents for the kids that the parents bought for them, and with a population of about 500-700 people, the idea of calling the kids up one by one was tedious.
How old are you?
Hey OP have you heard of Nomeansno or Dog Fashion Disco? Because I like those bands and if you haven't heard of them YOU DON'T KNOW MUSIC
I can't stand people who are so anal about their 'superior music' taste that they have to go and insult other people who don't share their opinions, you're basically just being a cunt.
I like Coldplay. It's not like I love them, but I do enjoy listening to their music. The amount of times someone has started going off on one about how I like Coldplay when they see one of their songs in my playlist is absolutely astounding, is it that bad that somebody likes something you don't? I wouldn't mind if it was just "Coldplay huh, pretty bad" and then they left it at that, but I have to be told exactly why they're awful and why I have shit taste for listening to them everytime somebody notices. They'll then go off to list either extremely popular, old bands like The Beatles or come out with a list of really obscure indie music, then act astounded when I don't know each and every one of them.

Oh god this. I don't like Coldplay that much but the same thing happens to me with other bands.
I work with similar nincompoops.
3 kids, 2 of them girls and 1 guy. Both the girls live in an isolated cave deep down in the wastelands of nothingness.
They. Don't. Know. Shit.
The guy I work with is fine, though he doesn't know anything about movies nor music.
I asked them similar questions, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Metallica and Aerosmith for christs' sake. They just looked at me like I was nuts.
One of the girls claim Ke$ha should be a respected artist because "she tries so hard", the other thinks Icelandic rap is supreme.
Debating music is fun with them, mostly because they don't know AnyThing.
The movie side is even worse.
"Martin Scorsese? Never heard of him.."
"Clint Eastwood? Is that some sort of drink?"
"Cohen brothers? Don't you mean the Cohens from the OC?"
"Bruce Willis? Oh! Isn't he the hot guy that was in Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Pirates of the Caribbean??"
All Actual Answers.
And I work with these tards.
too much dadrock
now i like dadrock, but christ almighty dadrock is not the greatest and when people say it is, it says something about their lack of musical taste.
Oh no someone with a different lifestyle than me, fuck him.
11 year olds don't know what lifestyle even means :downs:
So you decided to bitch on an internet forum because some kid didn't know a few bands that not everyone has heard of? Just because all your family/friends/pet guinea pigs have heard of those bands doesn't automatically mean he has to as well.
Although you probably should've punched him in the face when he mentioned Runescape.
Reminds me of certain friends I have who are trying to convince me to like thrash metal even though it sucks ass balls.
Thrash Metal rules
But then it is opinion so yeah.
Get off your high horse and take your head out your ass, just because some kid doesn't know about some old bands it doesn't mean it's the end of the world. And I don't see shit in the post about him claiming to know music.
''Well, this one time, at band camp''

I hate faggots that laugh at their own jokes! For great justice, I propose a penalty. We shall slap our sacks across their faces and stick bananas up their butts. That will teach them.
Come to think of it is taste anything more than a way for people to treat opinion as fact?
I don't really get how "you have poor taste" is significantly different from "you're incorrect if you like that song"
You should have shown him his own heart.

It must be a Canadian thing.
I'm glad I know about, and like bands that were around before circa '94. I mean, I feel sorry for the kids who have never heard Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, or have never heard Purple Haze, or never heard the musical masterpiece that is The Wall Album.
