So Far Cry is going back to Cry Engine? That's pretty cool
Where did you get that idea?
Edit:
OH There. The YouTube progress bar was covering the fine text at the bottom.
Oh Jesus the first big game set here in Montana is a ubisoft shitfest.
Time to neck myself.
is a ubisoft shitfest.

Maybe wait until we have something other then a teaser trailer before judging it.
Far Cry 3 and 4 were great. Primal was fun, not so great.
Plus Blood Dragon.
What's up with all the 'crazy rednecks' trend? First RE7, then Outlast2, now this. I don't really get it.
3 games out of thousands isn't close to being a trend.
Technically Far Cry 2&3 are using an engine based on CryEngine, but in the same way that Source 2 is technically an evolution of the Quake 1 engine.
Yeah, Dunia was a branch off CryEngine 1.
CryEngine 2 became very different from CryEngine 1 and had a whole fuckload of features added, and as such Dunia quickly became quite different from the CryEngine we know today.
I hope you're still looking at the country from a foreign perspective and a lack of understanding of the natives. Put someone from Europe in rural Montana and see how they survive :v:

I'm not even worried about the gameplay, I'm worried about how preachy/politicized and cartoony ubisoft's narrative shit is. This game will probably just shape up to be one giant lopsided quasi-revenge fantasy where you kill thousands of kooky religious rural backwards white strawmen as if a rural cop has the power to do something like that or as if something like that wouldn't attract immediate attention on a national scale. No doubt there will be plenty of ham-fisted Trump-related overtones in it as well just like Ubisoft couldn't help themselves with when they made WD2.
I'd just rather Montana, which gets no media coverage, not be portrayed like this. Ubisoft doesn't know the meaning of the word "subtlety".
Imagine if Ubisoft brings the concept of the towers from the previous far cry games. But replace them with Churches.
Then you have to mow down countless psychotic cultists or Westboro baptist style followers, Kingsman Style.
If it were anything else, I'd be quite surprised. I'm getting a real "American badlands cult" from this teaser.
But mechanically, I fear that it's probably going to be the same old shit as Far Cry 3 and 4. Even if they're secretly working on another spinoff that actually learns from previous mistakes, I fear that Far Cry 5 may be too far along to have learned from the mistakes of the recent games.
But at least this time, we'll probably have a larger arsenal than Primal, even if you're no longer the Beastmaster. Though I wouldn't object if they actually kept the Beastmaster mechanics alongside the modern day setting, like an ancient secret that the protagonist learns from some mysterious old Native American shaman. It'd be a little weird storywise, but mechanically it'd take the best of both worlds and be slightly better than 4.

Its fun to shoot racists
Its fun to shoot racists
Was race an important narrative element in RE7 and Outlast 2?
In fact, did it come up at all?
Sure you don't enjoy murdering some other category of people?
I'm actually pretty down with the idea of it being in Montana.
I feel like there's not enough games coming out these days set in modern day America. I mean sure most games feature Americans, but when you look at games set in America specifically, there's not a ton coming that don't modify it in some huge way (futuristic, post apocalypse, so on). And especially not a ton that come out that aren't set in fuckin' New York or Los Angeles, or some generic fictional city. I would be surprised if Montana has ever directly featured in a game ever. Even a more notable state, like Texas, has barely ever been featured in video games.
Montana seems like a real boring place to set a franchise that's usually about exotic landscapes. I don't doubt the usual Far Cry gameplay won't make any sense in regards to the story.
=snip=
Was that real world footage or just really good CGI?

The beginning of Darkest of Days is set at Little Bighorn, which looks like some picturesque hyper-green mountain valley in the game as opposed to the barren brown grassy hill that it is (I've been there).

I don't know about Montana in particular but America has some pretty fucking fantastic landscapes that are definitely worth looking at in a game not branded 'Cabela's'. In a way they're exotic on their own because even though they are part of our country, again, how often do you really see it in video games?
The hills on the east coast for instance are gorgeous in particular. Seems like their slice of Montana is going to involve mountain ranges and forested areas. Wouldn't be surprised if part of the map is comprised of a national park.

Well I'll be damned, I'm surprised there really is one. I would expect the only games to take place there would be maybe an NFL game if they have a NFL football stadium (I wouldn't know), and maybe Arcade America. Though to be fair, that is just the prologue :v:
I hope they try to portray the people in this game as actual characters with depth rather than stereotypes. Just because someone has a Southern accent it doesn't mean they are a bible thumping, violent moron.

We don't have any real national sports teams, certainly no massive stadiums. But yeah, the only other games I can think of are stuff like trucking and flight simulators.
There's a king of the hill episode set here!

Montana's landscapes are largely divided into which side of the state you're on. The western side is very mountainous and full of forests, the eastern is largely grassy plains with little elevation. Your typical romantic view of Montana would be more like the western half.

Here's a physical map to illustrate the point:

Between resident evil 7 and outlast I'm not sure how sold I am on crazy rednecks being the new go to villain
Would have adored cowboy far cry
Will probably still love the game but a little disappointed
Please god make the gameplay interesting, It's such a shame that they always seem to make interesting premises for these games and then absolutely fuck it up on the gameplay level.

That sounds actually perfect for a sandbox game map, when you think about it. Looks like that's exactly what they're going for too.

This I would not be hopeful for. I've heard it said that White Trash is 'the last group it's acceptable to hate', and I'd say that's pretty accurate in terms of how people think.
THAT SAID, the conservative areas of the US are such unexplored areas that I am so down with them taking place there. Man, I'm getting excited. I don't know about you guys, but the section of GTA V where you first took control of Trevor, and were fucking around in this small town with a bunch of rednecks, white trash, and bikers? That was my favorite
part of the game, and I wished there had been a lot more of it. If this is anything like that, I'm gonna love it.
I'm curious what they can do with the setting and how they will make it feel unique to the previous games.

I wouldn't be surprised if it goes for a more Rambo: First Blood kind of vibe in regards to the "Prey becoming Predator" theme of the franchise. The location can be as equally dangerous as any Savannah or Outback.

Montana is the fourth largest state by area. It's bigger than Germany, Finland, etc. You couldn't really have that variety on a map scale that makes sense but I'm sure they'll try anyways. Video game geography rarely makes sense afterall.

Well in defense of that, you gotta remember that both those were horror games. So naturally they depicted them as the most evil, dark, grimy shit possible.
This is a sandbox shooter, so there's every chance that you'll get a lighter depiction. And there does still have to be good guys. So I would imagine we'd be seeing friendly cops, or scared families, more normal people to contrast with the villains.
Hopefully they can pull it off well. Considering the lead villain has always been the best part of the series since 3, it could really work well combined with with what the trailer seems to depict as a serene Middle America with undercurrents of madness seeping in.
I imagine they could temper the horror aspect with some dark comedy and give the whole game a Fargo feeling, because that's the impression I got from this teaser.

Well Rockstar did Texas in a way that was pretty acceptable to most people, while having plenty of variance in landscapes. Weird geography is to be expected but from how you describe montana I reckon they would do a sort of 'meeting point' area where the forested places begin on the left side, and then the plains on the right side of the map.

Ironically the area of Montana where you'd see the kind of landscapes shown in the trailer is the most liberal by far, due to all of the nearby college towns like Missoula. Our Governor is a fucking Democrat for Christ's sake, who got reelected on the same day we voted for Trump. I have no idea why they chose this state.
If I see a single reused asset from FC3/FC4 I'll be super disappointed. FC4's biggest problem is that it was just FC3 set in a new location.

Ubisoft has been reusing the same P416 model for nearly every game they make with guns since Far Cry 3. I'd be fucking flabbergasted if there was not a single reused asset in this game. You'll probably see lots of guns from wildlands make it in.
