Isn't Taiwanese the same as Mandarin Chinese? I remember reading somewhere that Mandarin Chinese is the official language of Taiwan.

Taiwanese is the slanged version of mandarin or farmer talk like the southerners in America, Mandarin is now the official language, but my dad's side of the family a lot of them speak Taiwanese.
