• Uncharted 4 Isn't a Real Video Game (and That's OK)

I wonder how much of the differences between Uncharted 4 and the original trilogy come from the Lead Narritive Director and Lead Designer for the original series (Jacob Minkoff and Taylor Kuroaski), along with a few other high-ups like Eric Monacelli leaving Naughty Dog in 2014 to go to Infinity Ward. Are there any differences between the two that could be explained by that?
I don't think it's fair to say "it's not a real video game" at all. I feel like this is awfully similar to the "what is art?" argument in that you can't really define precisely what makes a game. The game mechanics change slightly during set pieces probably because it would be a total pain in the ass plus immersion breaking if you die a lot during them. I feel like this dude probably spent a lot more time playing the previous games than actually playing UC4. In 4 they opened up the game world a lot more and there's plenty more freedom. In regards to sitting in the same spot, it's not quite as viable this time around due to there being a ton of destructible cover.
He sums it up at the end. By "Not a real videogame" he means that the game doesn't have a consistent set of rules and mechanics, it just swaps in and out varying set pieces and scenes with individual mechanics to make things seem cool. He also did a 14 hour live stream where the game's awful AI was constantly battling him, where any time he tried to play smart the game just said "No, now is the time where you get in a shootout and you'll like it!" That's exactly why I think the new Tomb Raiders are much better than Uncharted, the gameplay is much more consistent (no cutting to scenes where the control is entirely different, like the fist fights in Uncharted 4), the platforming is more indepth and also used much less so it doesn't become weary, and the AI isn't omniscient once it sees you meaning stealth is actually a viable strategy. Uncharted is a fun experience that you can just switch your brain off for but it isn't a good game, the gameplay is so simplistic it's boring and the stories just excuses for the set pieces. And I like Uncharted.
I could never get through the first Uncharted, despite many attempts to finish it. All the characters I found to be just boring, whatever the story was left such little impression I remember not knowing why anything I had just done was being done, the environments never really felt actually adventurous, and the gameplay felt choppy and clunky, like I was having to actively fight the game to do anything. And I really did want to like it because I had heard so much about how great it was, and at least from the outside everything about it seemed like it'd be great.
Uncharted is one of my favorite series, and to be honest it's because of many of these flaws. I don't play uncharted because I want some revolutionary gameplay or mindfucking story, I just want to be Indiana Jones for 12 hours. Uncharted is the kind of game you play with a friend on easy over a weekend. If that's not your cup of tea, then yeah, you're probably not gonna like the game.

I really can see where he's coming from, but tbh for me it's the complete opposite. The gameplay and the action is the happy side effect of me playing the game for the story and the characters. Though he's right about a lot of the gameplay, it's nothing, if you want Uncharted's gameplay expanded to the point where it's worth a damn I'd play the new Tomb Raiders. I completely agree with his gameplay criticisms, but not the story ones. Also, one thing I really appreciated in Uncharted was that later in they integrated platforming into the shooting segments, I liked that they finally got rid of that artificial line between mechanics and as a result I much prefer the 2 later games.
this video is so amazingly spot on, it's music to my ears Uncharted is a perfect example of everything I can't stand about video games
