Why not to send people to labour camps instead of executing them? - General

It isn't as simple as "Oh just put them in a labour camp and they will pay fro themselves", there are too many other factors. You have to build the camp, employ people to keep the workers under control, employ people to keep the people who keep the workers under control under control, transport costs, food, water, training (for the employees), equipment to name but a few.

In essence a lot of prisons are labour camps, in the US 100% of helmets and body armours used by the military are produced by inmates and I forget the exact number but there's something like 60% of licence plates too.

Many prisons already have voluntary labor programs that allow inmates to work outside the prison walls under guard, doing community services such as litter pickup, recycling operations, and even some manufacturing and construction jobs. I fully support voluntary labor programs, and many prisoners would even jump on an opportunity to go work somewhere if for no other reason than to get off of prison grounds for a while-- to feel normal again. However, forcing a man into hard labor without benefit strips him of the very things that make him a human, and that is simply not acceptable. Though a murderer may be a wretched and dangerous man, nobody deserves to have his rights and his humanity stripped out from under him. The question of whether or not capital punishment is morally acceptable has been hotly debated for much longer than you or I were even capable of voicing an opinion, but the issue of slavery, and where humanity as a whole should stand on the subject, has been dusty for generations, and for good reason. No man, regardless of circumstance, deserves to be made a slave. People may lock a man up to protect the rest of the world, and some would even argue that you can kill him for that same purpose, but dehumanizing another person is something that no conscionable man should even consider.
