Maybe I'm just not very artistic but I like OP's cartoony style. It has some wonky flair to it.
Maybe I'm just not very artistic but I like OP's cartoony style. It has some wonky flair to it.
I also enjoy seeing pictures drawn by kindergarteners for the same reason.
I like it, its got a thrashy sketchy style. kind of saying "i want to make something but i don't feel like working hard and i generally don't give a fuck"
now i know why i don't come in here anymore, you guys are assholes
Oh thank god someone else agrees. [editline]15th June 2011[/editline]
I like it, its got a thrashy sketchy style. kind of saying "i want to make something but i don't feel like working hard and i generally don't give a fuck"
Or the, you know, I am inexperienced and don't actually know what to look for/how to draw better so how about stop assuming he's being lazy and just say he can do better. [editline]15th June 2011[/editline] I also like how Facepunch posts en-mass when it's a sub-par thread, and very little or not at all when it's decent or not bad. Very classy.
You guys are kind of assholes. I agree. Sure, you call it C&C but you are just taking a big shit on everyone. You don't even say anything good about it. Atleast like "Keep working on it!" or something.
C&C for OP: Work on referencing more, look at what you're trying to draw instead of drawing it from memory. I know the thought process of "I can draw it from memory fine" but you'll soon realize that looking at it makes all the difference. And fix anything that looks odd, until it looks right! (Or as close to right as you can get) Don't be afraid to lightly sketch a rough outline first, and then add in the rest of the details and lines afterwards. (Now, was that so hard Facepunch?)
There isn't much positive you can say. Unless you want us to be like deviantArt and say "I luv it keep up the good work!! :downs:"
You don't have to say positive, but the negative things you say should be useful, not "This is just bad, stop trying/don't suck" or "lol how old r u" (Not saying you specifically, just the general trend) [editline]15th June 2011[/editline]
the fact that you can't even see your own mistakes is pretty bad. did you expect only praise for your work? if so posting them here seems pretty useless. I can give you tips on how to get better, like, use a ruler for starters, study the weapons and figure out how they are put together, if not you're just blindly guessing what you're drawing. Don't be proud that you have made some badly drawn copies of some guns with your eyes, this is what children do
If artists knew all their mistakes, they wouldn't need to ask for criticism. Thankfully, he did, and all you give him is harsh words. "This is what children do" Well sorry to say that, to some artists, your work would be "childish" too. It's all a matter of perspective, and dishing out strong critiques like the ones in this thread to someone who's trying to draw but isn't up to par with everyone else is just unfair. Everyone should have an equal amount of critiquing based on their current level of skill. You don't tell someone who's just learned how to ride a bike that he sucks simply because he can't do a wheelie. [editline]15th June 2011[/editline] This is why I don't like this section any more. It used to encourage artists who just wanted a look and a comment to come out and get feedback. Now it's become the corner of "You can't post anything below this line of skill." because people just want to see pretty stuff and don't really give two fucks if they're helping people get better or not. Furthermore, unlike a lot of idiots who post shitty drawings and take no criticism, this member is actually somewhat receptive to it, or would be if people weren't mowing him down left right and center, most likely discouraging instead of encouraging his artistic pursuits. And for anyone that says he shouldn't pursue them because he isn't very good, fuck you. Every person has a goddamn right to do what they love doing, especially if it's as harmless a hobby as this one. Whether or not they're good at it doesn't make a lick of difference.

Maybe not, but some of the comments that were said would definitely make me want to stop drawing, and ultimately that's what pisses me off. It does look like what I drew in elementary school. Plus, the first step of getting good at something you are really bad at is realizing that you suck. Plus, that third statement is the only asshole comment. No one is incapable of getting better.

To be honest, they're not that bad. Yeah, some of his lines aren't straight and the guns look a bit wonky, but aside from that, I really like the bold style he used for them. If you work on getting all the proportions right, these'd look pretty good.
replied in quote stop being such a baby
About the first
... Detlef, I understand that i'm going to get harsh criticism and I can handle that, but I expect alittle constructive feedback too. Not just "You suck! Badly drawn! Do better! If you give harsh criticism, whether you like it or not it often discourages from trying again. [editline]15th June 2011[/editline]
Actually, my first statement was indeed true. There is a difference between "sucking" and "inexperienced" This guy doesn't suck. I know people that suck. These drawings actually look like what he's attempting to draw, and are just missing some proportion and line refinement. Telling someone their drawings are shit does not encourage them to get better as much as it discourages them from 1.Asking for C&C in future or 2.Trying again. Of course for persistent artists this is not true, but for the ones who are just starting out, and who have potential, it could be the case.
Regarding contructive criticism, the less skilled you are the more general/non specific advice you will get. this forum is indeed way too focused on giving criticism and too little on giving support along with it, which ends up with people having no confidence to continue.

It wasn't to make him feel that his drawings are shit. I was actually pretty good for my age back then. I mean, this stuff would make him head of the art class in third grade. Also, how I see it, saying someone sucks is way to say how inexperienced they are. I was told how bad I was. You can't get better without some criticism. Even if it is harsh.

If you work on getting all the proportions right, these'd look pretty good.
I don't think he's using a patricular style of his choosing, he's just trying to draw them to best of his abilities. And the most common thing that beginners do is those thick and wobbly lines. I think he's doing the lines too slowly or applying too much pressure. What he should be doing is just fly the pen from the line's starting point to the end really quickly. A sort of woosh-action. That doesn't mean a million of small scribbly lines (which is another beginner mistake) but confident, long strokes. Take a stack of empty papers, strike random dots on them and try to connect the dots in single, quick and confident strokes. Do long and short ones. Fill a few papers with those every day or so. [editline]17th June 2011[/editline] I think there's been two kinds of comments going on here. Criticism and making fun of him. Critique is fine as long as it's based on solid fact and mistakes; it's not an argument of his technique or the lack of it. Making fun of him is the opposite of encouraging him to improve (which the criticism usually does as well, it depends on how the recepient takes the criticism and how willing he is to improve on those points). I think all of the mockers here already know they are setting him back with every funny post. These are the real assholes, not the people who give harsh (or "rude") criticism.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone said anything similar to that at all.
Why don't you shut up, and try to get the point instead of being picky and immature? OP, I like your non-gun drawings. The shading needs a tad work, but the style is cool. Curves and composure is good, and it seems like it suits the style in a good way. If you feel like it, a focal point of some sort would probably benefit your drawing.
I'm very glad that you like to draw c: OP. You should nurture that and work on improving your art.

A few artists in the thread gave advice, but included harsh criticism with it. Dclone later replied to me that you have to keep the artist motivated (without including harsh criticism) in order to improve his drawings. I don't remember being immature and picky, but I'm sorry if I acted like that.
