It's a shame about the game's artstyle. The disconnect between the trailer artstyle and actual artstyle is staggering.

Yeah, I'm fine with the artstyle in something like Civ Rev where it's supposed to be a lighter version of regular civ. Here, coming off the heels of V, it just feels wrong.
I really dislike how a stylized game automatically has shitloads of people saying it should be an iphone game.

Probably because it looks bad. Compare to Endless Legend which is stylized and looks good:

While I don't either style fits Civilization at all, at least it would look a hell of a lot better.
I dont think it looks bad at all. I think the game just needs to be seen in action. but it doesnt matter if the game looks bad, its that people instantly say its an iphone game if its just a slight bit cartoony, the same thing with dawn of war 3. so tf2 is an iphone game? overwatch? its frustrating hearing it from so many people.
I definitely feel like it's a good thing that they picked a direction with the art style, because the previous game sort of felt like it fell somewhere in between and honestly looked kind of drab and dull. You had realistic leaders and whatnot, but then you had gigantic units that towered over cities, the cities only being like one tile big.
I just don't know that going cartoony over realistic would have been my choice. It'll certainly help the game age without looking like dog shit and fast, it'll help the game run a lot better I'm sure, but I dunno. I think pushing the realism and going for smaller units and bigger cities that are like sprawling kingdoms and generally making it feel and look more real would have been the better option. I can definitely see why people are saying it looks like a mobile game. I'm sure my idea of what I would want Civ to be is vastly different to a lot of Civ fans and the devs themselves.
I just hope this one is more complex and less ridiculously unfair to the player.
I just hope it's far more complex and less tedious
Is that Sean Bean?
i disagree, V looks more sleek in comparison
just compare the trees between the two pictures, like what the hell happened
Looks like it's rendering individual trees instead of sticking a flat texture over a tile. It'd be cool if they matched different tree species to different climates instead of using the same tree but I'm not counting on it. Personally, I don't have a problem with the cartoonier style. Everything will eventually be covered by the tile icons and yields and animations will be turned off.
Gameplay is king.
