The group consists of vocalist Stefan "MC Ride" Burnett and production from Zach Hill. Death Grips live performance setup consists of Burnett on vocals and Hill on drums, and previously included Morin on keyboards/sampler. The band's music has been described as combining punk rock, hip hop and noise. They released the mixtape Exmilitary in April 2011, and in 2012 they released two studio albums, The Money Store in April and No Love Deep Web in October. Their releases have received acclaim from music critics, including the former placing 9th in Pitchfork's Best 50 Albums of 2012.
Death Grips has been called Alternative hip hop, experimental hip hop, industrial hip hop, noise, angry hobo rap, and many other names. I agree with all of them. Their songs are... raw. Burnett does not so much rap as much as scream verse and it somehow all fits together and is somehow pleasing to the ears, at least to some. Their music videos are usually surreal and visually taxing, which fits the style of music perfectly.
Yeah Exmilitary's amazing. Constantly torn between whether that or The Money Store is their best record.
Exmilitary has some of my favorite songs by them but I think Money Store is the superior album overall Just feels a lot more solid
why not
Not sure. Guess the death grip kind of wore off for a short while. Maybe it's time to rekindle the beast. [editline]11th March 2013[/editline]
He's too busy taking it.
next album art should be a donkey foot up your arse!
haven't listened to the dick album yet
you're missing out big time bruv
im kinda worried about how they'll go forward especially after nldw i love everything they made but i think exmilitary was my fav "core" death grips, with TMS being a more electronic departure from the super punk influenced vibe of exmilitary. NLDW was hard to get into but after forcing myself to give it a shot i love it, but think its the worst thing theyve put out (still amazing tho). reason im worried is flatlander is still in iceland and idk if he was involved in production of NLDW or to what extent, but NLDW feels a lot more minimal and barren, lacked the sporadic and noisy feeling of exmil and tms, yet in their pitchfork interview they say thats what they envision death grips as? i hope they go back to a TMS feeling with their future stuff, but i have a bad feeling that without flatlander they'll be sticking with minimalist NLDW stuff

Exmilitary is like the "igniter" of the band; 2 albums after that, they can just try and become more established. Until the music becomes "dysfunctional" then you'll know it's time to take a break. I'm assuming it's long way from that point.
Exmilitary has some of my favorite songs by them but I think Money Store is the superior album overall Just feels a lot more solid
Yeah. There are a few songs on Ex that I'll listen to but I just think they're ok. The Money Store I'll listen to all the way through every time, except for Hacker. Not a fan of that song at all. I really enjoy NLDW though. Whammy is such a fun song and Artificial Death in the West is probably the best closer to an album they've got.
Hacker was probably one of my favorites on that album, guess Im the odd man out.

well this was at coachella if he had broken his leg he would be in pretty bad shit he didnt get to see radiohead because they played after death grips
well this was at coachella if he had broken his leg he would be in pretty bad shit he didnt get to see radiohead because they played after death grips
He missed out BIG time there poor guy. Reminds me of the time a friend at a festival wanted to see pendulum he got trashed and woke up in the infirmary. (support tent) When he asked staff what time it was and that he didnt want to miss pendulum they didnt have the heart to tell him he had missed them and told him they were playing in 12 hours. When we went to pick him up was the funniest shit I'd seen all year, "thanks for making sure I didnt die but fuck you for lying to me cunts." etc etc
Aw man that sounds rough Also, theres two Death Grips threads I dont know whats going on

money store best death grips album
I like Exmilitary the most honestly. I like the sounds of stuff like Takyon and No Love over stuff like Bitch Please. Exmilitary just sounds the most...normal, I guess.
Exmilitary is like rapcore. The Money Store reminds me of The Velvet Underground & Nico; seems like pop-art to me for some reason.
