This latest episode came close to actually being satisfying which hasn't happened for me in a while. Still feel like it was lacking. I really can't get over David Tennant it seems.

Think how it must feel for people to whom the Third Doctor was 'their' doctor and have had to put up with eight more pretenders over the years
Want to know who Clara is? Somebody claims to have the answer:
[sp]Clara isn't the impossible girl, she is entirely possible. The Doctor is lured to Tenzalore, which is where his grave is located. The Great Intelligence kidnaps and threatens his friends (the peeps from the christmas special) in order to get the doctor to open the tomb (which is the tardis) The doctor doesn't relent, but River does, she was there when the doctor revealed his true name. The doors open, everyone walks in to see a web of white light. The white light is the doctor, as a body is... Cliche. It is a web of all of the doctor's timelines, everytime he transported in time and space a new strand was created. The Great Intelligence enters into the web and begins to kill the doctor, over a million timelines, and reverting any victory the doctor made, which also kills the Great Intelligence (he has to die in every timeline at some point in time. The universe begins to disappear and the doctor begins to die. To save him, Clara jumps into the Doctor's timeline and saves him over a million times (The dalek asylum, the christmas special, all times Clara saves the doctor) but she too has to die in the process, and dies over a million times. The doctor is saved, time reverted, Clara is dead, but not entirely. The Doctor enters into his own timeline to save her. The Clara the doctor meets in present time is the genuine article, the original. Every Clara we have met have been her, but an offshoot of the original.[/sp]
I know it could be bull but.. this feels very right. I like it. It sounds like Moffat.
Mostly because although it deals with all the plot strands, it also has a huge amount of convenience.
[sp]OH NO THE GI IS KILLING THE DOCTOR. Oh it's okay doing so killed him.. for some reason?[/sp]
[sp]OH NO THE DOCTOR WON'T REVEAL HIS NAME TO OPEN THE TOMB.. It's okay River knows it[/sp]
[sp]OH NO CLARA IS DEAD.. It's okay he just went and saved her instantly[/sp]

Also another plus side. David Tennant is still alive and not old so can return later this year. Some fans will never see their favourite Doctor again.

so that would make clara a [sp]peggy sue mary sue[/sp]
and I thought people were joking when they said doctor who was turning into fanfiction
So, most recent episode.
I loved it. It had very few plot holes, if any at all until the end, the monster was good, the plot was good, the characters were good...
Clara's speech was a little overdone, but other than that it was neat.
Except the last minute. Everything was wrapped up, then [sp]OH BY THE WAY MONSTER LOVE STORY POWER OF LOVE IS EDITORALLY MANDATED BETTER THROW THIS IN[/sp]
It was like they realised they had a minute left and just threw it in, and it was absolutely bizarre.
[sp]It was probably because they failed to put a THE POWER OF LOVE moment in the rest of the episode and realised they had to shove it in somewhere even if it made no fucking sense whatsoever. Seriously, what was up with the last minute?[/sp]

I think it's a fine resolution. Why you so easily angry at Doctor Who these days dude?
[editline]21st April 2013[/editline]
Hide is a terrible title though that really means nothing.
I think it's a fine resolution. Why you so easily angry at Doctor Who these days dude?
oh no I'm not angry at doctor who - last weeks episode was kickass
it might have come off that way but I don't really like clara's character because she just seems like a bland mary sue.
as for fanfiction it's not as though that's a criticism per se - I've read some fanfics that were superior to the thing they were based on, but [sp]peggy sue[/sp] stories need to be handled with a lot of care because they can very easily [sp]dissolve all the tension of previous stories and make all of them meaningless[/sp] and I'm not sure whether the moff can pull it off
Also really liking Matt's performance in Hide. He toned down the wackiness since Series 6. Still nothing like the 11 we saw in Series 5 though, wonder what happened to him.
Amy and Rory happened.

The reports that Cold War was Matt's best ever performance though were still justified.

Overall, I think his performances in series 5 were fantastic - but he didn't do the playful doctor as well as he does it now.
his chemistry is way better with clara than it was with amy but

My whole perception of Smith is skewed. I went into his episodes trying to want to like him but knowing I wanted to not like him. Then I watched all his subsequent episodes in a daze of dislike.
Considering that I think that he has been the same poor quality all through out his episodes until about now when he has gotten a bit better maybe I need to watch his first season again.
I tried to in preparation for season six I think but after the first couple episodes I couldn't do it. I had just watched all of Tennant's episodes as well though...
Oh man imagine this but over every series since the 70's. Especially if you were alive to watch them at original air date. The torture that would be.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, CoolCorky and Dan2593, I never even thought about that.

blatant tennant fanboyism ain't great I remember when matt smith came in and noone liked him
I legitimately think hes one of the best doctors we've had, if you pay attention to his performances they are all fantastic especially the ones in season 5 with the eleventh hour and that dalek episode. Series 7 has been even better - series 6 he was hampered by awful writing but still managed to put out some great acting
With Doctor Who you can only adapt or wait & hope. Being permanently tied to one era, however, would mean that you're screwed until the day the show goes off the air.
Tumblr granted my request in good time.

I wouldn't say any actor has failed in the role. They are a reflection of the writing and direction.
Grizz, you might be going a bit overboard with the JLC tumblr stuff

I keep watching the episodes wanting to like them. I am not sure if it is all Tennant fanboyism (that definitely plays a part), more just a longing to actually be emotionally attached to what is going on. Episodes like "Midnight" where you were introduced to the characters in one episode and could legitimately care about what happens to them in the same episode and have an emotional response to the events. In one episode. Whereas here in the newer episodes I can never bring myself to care about the characters.
I feel like they all have the potential to have that effect as well. Like in Cold War, Clara's response to [sp]the dead soldiers[/sp] was a great step up, but I feel like they could have played that up far more (read: actually have a normal person response to seeing that). And the latest episode with the warning to her about [sp]The Doctor having a shard of cold in his heart, or whatever it was she said[/sp] I feel like that is setting up more the kind of morality and mortality questions that Doctor Who shows always bring up, but they don't always address.
I like the idea of feeling like The Doctor is the expert and relying on him at the beginning to guide you through and scold you when you break the rules and then have him for one reason or another be taken away from you and then you realise you can actually stand on his level even without his extensive knowledge. But most of the Smith episodes put the companion as being a significantly capable individual straight from the start.
I wouldn't say any actor has failed in the role. They are a reflection of the writing and direction.
Yeah Matt Smith is a great actor. I really do think all my problems come down to direction and writing.
[editline]21st April 2013[/editline]
Additionally I really think they should put much more emphasis when new companions come along on the whole learning about who the Doctor is and all the things that go along with that. Besides "bigger on the inside" they are playing off of us already knowing how he works, and the companions take that in their stride.
Grizz, you might be going a bit overboard with the JLC tumblr stuff
you can never go overboard where JLC is concerned
Last night's episode was pretty awesome! Kinda creepy, interesting explanation of the "ghost", and I liked Clara a lot more in this than I have in previous episodes.
Grizz, you might be going a bit overboard with the JLC tumblr stuff
Grizz comes from the same place as JLC. I don't really remember Grizz posting before JLC was announced, maybe I just got a rubbish memory. I think Grizz has seen her around the area in the past or something. Either way Grizz is clearly a big fan. It's got to the point I recognise Grizz as the "JLC fanatic" even on other forums.

I so agree. I really liked Clara feeling sad at the end of the world, I really liked Clara feeling sad at the dead soldiers.
I think a companion shouldn't stay more than 2 series. Amy got far too used to the world around her. Rory was always great because he never did.
I think it's why they always introduce a second person if the companion stays around for more than a year. A link for the audience. Amy got Rory, Rose got Mickey, and Donna got Wilf.
You know, i sorta wish Doctor Who would be 2.35:1 rather than 16:9, while i know it's for TV, it could just does with some extra space.
Grizz, you might be going a bit overboard with the JLC tumblr stuff
This is subtle compared to pre-Series 7 :v:
BBC America has a few extra shots... three, I think. Including a close-up of the creature - if that's something you want.

The TARDIS console explosion is different to that of the Launch Trailer - perhaps that was from the finale. Especially given the poster.....

werds
I think they've done so much of the whole "look we're a companion and we're learning about who the doctor is and how travelling with the doctor works" that its so overdone now, they need to find a new schtick because its pretty much a similar reaction from the companions every time
I dont want to have that same situation replayed with different actors ad infinitum for the rest of the doctor who franchise
Also man, I must be the only person here who didn't really like midnight? weird
That episode was fantastic. The shoe-horned monster love plot wasn't that bad. Could have done without it, but it made the ending softer. Kind of cute. Creepy in the right places, used the sci-fi element of time travel right, and the TARDIS was given more functionality than it usually has. Thoroughly enjoyable.
His sonic also seems to be breaking.
River knows his name, the title of the pre-50th episode gives away that she'll know it then. She hints she knows his regenerations, which means there'll be more than one reference to the previous doctors. The red setting has made an appearance. The sonic is breaking and will need fixing, to give it that used look just like the TARDIS has in the pre-50th episode poster. Everything is coming full circle.
holy shit you guys next episode!!

Seriously, great episode. Only just watched it because of a busy weekend involving a trip south and my room-mate being proposed to and saying yes and rollercoasters. Best weekend ever.
More relevantly, here's a photo of me and Sylvester McCoy. Went to a convention on the weekend with him and Alex Kingston, ask me anything.

I'm kinda curious; what is the difference between a [sp]"peggy sue"[/sp] and a [sp]mary sue[/sp]? Or are they different names for the same thing? I can assume that [sp]mary sue[/sp] is an idealised author-surrogate kind of character?
Also that's a cool staff there Aries. Reminds me of what Gandalf the Grey used in Fellowship except with a green crystal. Oh wait, wasn't Sylvester McCoy in The Hobbit as that Radhagast the Brown chap?
