We all took a literature class at some point. Since they made it a trilogy as movies, it's just sort of stuck in my mind.
Still doesn't change the fact that the book is fucking unbearable to read.
It does get a little tiring when Tolkien spends an entire page describing something like a wall. I still liked reading it though.
I find his depth and imagery amazing. People also exaggerate how much it is a bunch as well.
[img_thumb]http://www.iain-banks.net/lib/UseofWeapons.jpg[/img_thumb]
My favourite book.
Personally I find Excession to be a much more enjoyable than Use of Weapons, but all Culture novels are fantastic.

Pretty much the only Culture book I don't like is Consider Phlebas, not from a setting point of view but from the writing style, it doesn't leap out at me like any of the other Culture books do.

The cover caught my eye at my local bookstore. Recommendations?

This book was great, most realistic view of terraforming I have seen in science fiction if you ask me.
Gotta love Niven for working out the science parts of his novels.
Currently reading the Ravenor Omnibus by Dan Abnett and Makers by Cory Doctorow. Does anyone else find that Abnett has some difficulties with the scale of things?

I can respect it, yes. I just don't enjoy it.
Ive read The Lord Of A Ring. its a preety good book.
Ive seen the movie too.
The story is about a ring that could make a monster that strong so he could destroy the world. But the young frodo wants to help the guild of ''dont remember the name'' so he's going on an adventure to destroy the ring. when he does the world is saved and they can relax yet another time.

What
Is that based on the game, or is the game based on the book?
Game is based on the books.

Almost finished - and it's so deliciously short. :) It's nice being able to finish a book in only a few days for a change.
Anyway, it's pretty damn good. Imagery and dialouge is pretty cinematic, I'm not surprised it only took them a year or two to start movie production.
Admittedly it's super-depressing, but those who think it's the darkest book they've ever read need to try Blood Meridian.
Yeah that's pretty light compared to Blood Maridian, which is thirty times better in my own opinion.
Got The Big Sleep and A Study in Scarlet in the mail today, been in quite a detective-y mood lately

The Road is possibly my favourite fiction. Alongside I Am Legend, maybe.
Few books I've liked, and I'm not much of a reader.

The story is somewhat far-fetched, and I read it when I was a kid. Though really it's a pretty engaging story with good characters. Though if you're one of those people who read a book and pick every little implausibility out of it, you probably won't like it.
It's about a high schooler who finds an old envelope in a reference book about smallpox. He opens it up and finds some scabs in it, which he then begins to wonder if the scabs contain the smallpox virus in them. He doesn't know what to do - If he has the disease, he should kill himself before he spreads it. If he doesn't have it, then nothing's wrong. The whole book pretty much follows his confliction on what to do, not sure if he's about to cause the death of many people or not.

Had to read this one for school, and it was surprisingly good. A bit of a chick-flick book thing, but I'm willing to admit I liked it. There are portions of the book that have romance and drama, though a good bit of it is fairly action-y (like how Will nearly gets hit by a train on like the 40th page).
The plot is basically as follows: It takes place in a city called Cold Sassy, Georgia in the early 1900s. A grandfather's wife dies, and only a few weeks later, the grandfather re-marries to a very young and attractive woman. The whole town goes to scandal. Really, a lot of the stuff in the book doesn't lead up to a lot, but it was still an entertaining book.

I was iffy on a Halo book, thinking it wouldn't be as entertaining as the games. I was wrong. It's pretty much a not-quite-canon prequel to Halo 1, following Master Chief through his entire venture in the SPARTAN program's training, leading up to the events of Halo 1. I lost myself, reading about 60 pages at a time on this. It will suck you in.
Re-reading His Dark Materials like I said I would on page 1 or 2-ish. Already picking up on a lot of stuff I missed the first time around.

Any Sharpe book (they're pretty much all the same)
I just finished reading The Two Towers and wished Cornwell could have written the battle scene; the best parts from Tolkien in my opinion are when he describes the world, I find his writing a bit lacklustre when it comes to action.
And why have [del]none[/del] only a few of you posted any of THESE

This one had me glued, and even in tears, at some point. Absolutely amazing. Terry Pratchett's way of imagining things is so hilarious and childlike; they're always brilliant.
How many miles to Babylon. Thin but awesome novel. Especially the way the protagonist describes the environment, it all sounds very poetic.
I want to read Nietzsche's Wille zur Macht (The Will to Power), can anyone tell me wether it's worth it or not?
I'm reading red badge of courage (Pretty good) and I reserved House of Leaves and it IS HERE! How is house of leaves?
I'm reading red badge of courage (Pretty good) and I reserved House of Leaves and it IS HERE! How is house of leaves?
It is a strange book. Not as incomprehensible as everyone says aside from a mysterious plotline, although all of the blank spaces and upside down text and stuff is confusing intentionally so.
Well, I spent most of my day finishing Count Zero, and am ready to move on to Mona Lisa Overdrive.
Any Gibson fans in this thread? Or anyone who can hack Gibson for that matter?
As I said earlier, I just finished Neuromancer. I think I'd like to read Johnny Mnemonic.

This is a fantastic book as well, although it's hard to explain without spoilers. I highly recommend this too.
why the fuck is there a UNSC Scorpion on the cover? hang on, gimme a minute to post my choice...

Incredibly complex scifi novel that does a good job of telling the story from all sides. The plot is very intricate, action well-written and it hits an unmatched level of epicness in the final act.
Do any of you guys have an opinion of Cliffard Simak? I tried to get into one of his books and I'm not feeling drawn in, but I've heard great things about him from multiple book lovers.
The Road is possibly my favourite fiction. Alongside I Am Legend, maybe.
Ugh, I Am Legend has a good payoff, but I feel the author developed such a great concept and didn't bother to run with it.

I say read it, it really strikes me as just a fantastical read. The civilian parts in the States are ignorable but it really does contrast well how different the politics were then.

I love Harry Turtledove, but it pisses me off how every book I've read by him is full of excessive amounts of fucking.
As I said earlier, I just finished Neuromancer. I think I'd like to read Johnny Mnemonic.
Watch the movie for Johnny Mnemonic sometime. It's hilarious.

Clive Cussler doesn't write the deepest, most thought-provoking books around but man are they packed full of concentrated awesome. Great entertainment; they are the action-movies of books (but better by far!).
"Corsair" itself is a book I've recently finished. I've taken a liking to the Oregon series.

Zombie romance. Literally.
Wait, how the hell does that work?
Wait, how the hell does that work?
Zombies have feelings too
What are some things about the plot I should keep in mind as I read House Of Leaves. (It's very very weird yet interesting so far.)
