For the 3rd time I couldn't find DUNE MESSIAH at a book store. They ALWAYS have EVERY other book in the DUNE CHRONICLES except the 2nd one :( So, instead I bought the only Ender book I haven't read (Also just finished Empire and Hidden Empire; both left me kind of disappointed and were not nearly up to OSC's potential): [img_thumb]http://ar-images.tangentone.com.au/images/ar/97807653/9780765344151/180/270/plain/ender-in-exile.jpg[/img_thumb] And I bought 2001 SPACE ODYSSEY: [img_thumb]http://www.vyvy.org/main/sites/vyvy.org/files/2001_space_odyssey_book_cover.jpg[/img_thumb] And I'm also reading Neuromancer: [img_thumb]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MLk8JqCNMDs/TNqWldNxQqI/AAAAAAAAADo/Z7tPzArrHCQ/s1600/Cover+-+Neuromancer.jpg[/img_thumb] If you couldn't already tell, I'm working my way through some of top Sci-Fi books according to: http://home.austarnet.com.au/petersykes/topscifi/lists_books_rank1.html So far I've read: Ender's Game (and the other 7 books) Dune Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Fahrenheit 451 The Time Machine Frankenstein Also, took an awesome course at university this year called History of Culture, Ideas, and Environment. Essentially you go through historical periods from the beginning of civilization up to present time and you read a book from the period and watch a movie pertaining to the period. It provided me with a great list of good books, what we read: Epic of Gilgamesh The Odyssey Tales from Ovid Dante's Inferno Don Quixote Gulliver's Travels The Question of Hu Frankenstein The Kill Herzog The Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka All Quiet on the Western Front In the Skin of a Lion All That is Solid Melts Into Air The Educated Imagination
I like any book that has one person in a controlled society go " wait, what the fuck is going on here?" books I like anthem the Giver Ender's Game Fahrenheit 451 The catcher in the rye Alas' Babylon 1984(when i finally get my hands on it lord of flies mind you I am only a sophomore but I have already read most of the books due to me spending copious amounts of time in I.S.S. for insubordination.
Everyone keeps talking about H.P. Lovecraft's books like they are amazing, but I haven't read any of them. What kind of books are they and just how good are they? [editline]3rd April 2011[/editline] lol most of those appear to be school books anyway. I read lord of the flies, anthem, the giver, ender's game, fahrenheit 451, and enders game all in my freshman year or before
same but still I can see why they are required reading.
Apart from Terry Pratchett, i'd reccomend: a brilliant laid-back funny read, perfect loo reading (i'm not saying that in a derogatry sense mind you)
Enders mother-fucking game! [img_thumb]http://exonero.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/enders-game.jpg[/img_thumb]
Series went to shit after the second book.
i read enders game 4th grad farenheit 451 in 5th and The Giver in 8th and the rest last year

Speaking of Sci-Fi I need to finish Foundation. I'm reading all three connected series in one go. Robot->Empire->Foundation
and i've recently purchased the following to finish off a gift card before borders went out of business, havent read much of it, i pretty much got it because aside from it's awesome cover art the guy at the borders store kept raving about it. what i've read so far isn't bad, but i feel very uninformed to what's happening the base of the plot takes off from something that happened in another book.
Also, if you haven't read this yet, I recommend you do. Kept me reading till the end.

[editline]2nd April 2011[/editline] Random question, why did 1000 posts get erased from my account?
They deleted posts prior to 2009, I believe.
They deleted posts prior to 2009, I believe.
Agg, now I'll never get close to 2000 posts :(. Been posting since 2005, but I read a lot more than I actually post. The fact that I had 1548 was pretty impressive personally.
Yeah I posted a bunch back in 2009, I've hardly posted at all the past year and a half. Anyway this is what I'm reading now:
Series went to shit after the second book.
While the 3rd and 4th weren't nearly as good as the first and second, they were still great. [img_thumb]Ender's Game[/img_thumb]
Ender's Game (and the other 7 books)
7? Ender's Game > Speaker for the Dead > Xenocide > Children of the Mind + Ender's Shadow > Shadow of the Hegemon > Shadow Puppets > Shadow of the Giant + First Meetings in the Enderverse, A War of Gifts (well, sort of), Ender in Exile That's 11, by my count. Unless you aren't counting the ones that aren't officially part of the Ender/Shadow series. Anyway, dying for Shadows in Flight. Trying to read the rest of the books as slowly as possible so I'm not left just waiting for one book to be released. I hate that.
Wow I just realized that anthem and 1984 have such similar plots, the only difference is that in the end of anthem[sp]ego prevails and they break off from their shitty utopia to live happy lives[/sp]but in 1984 when they attempt to do that[sp]winston is brainwashed then executed[/sp]
Does anyone else listen to music whilst they read?
I like Warhammer 40k books. There are two series I am currently reading. Gaunts Ghosts
Gaunt's Ghosts is a series of novels written by Dan Abnett. It is a military science fiction series set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The series spans twelve novels which document the efforts of the Tanith First-And-Only, a highly skilled yet unappreciated scout infantry regiment of the Imperial Guard, during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The protagonist is Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, one of the few political commissars of the Imperium to be officially awarded command of a regiment. Although Gaunt is the primary character, the perspective from which the novels are told shifts regularly to encompass a wider view of events - it is usually told from the Imperial point of view, though the perspective is occasionally seen through the eyes of antagonists. The series alludes to other series by Dan Abnett, such as Eisenhorn and Ravenor, and has resulted in three spin-off works.
The Horus Heresy
The Horus Heresy is an ongoing series of science fiction novels, the first of which was published by the Black Library in 2006. Quick question, how good is Roadside Picnic? I plan on picking it up after reading a couple of my books.
Will I get ridiculed for saying that I read the hunger games?
Quick question, how good is Roadside Picnic? I plan on picking it up after reading a couple of my books.
It's very good, golden age of science fiction good. Bit too short, but what can you expect from a Novella?
Picking up a Game of Thrones tomorrow, heard good things about it.
I got The Way of the Shadows yesterday by Brent Weeks after a friend recommend it. Shall probably start reading it tonight.
7?
Yeah I was only counting the Ender and Bean quartets, neither Ender in Exile,War of Gifts, or First Meetings were out when I originally read through the books. So, I'm starting Ender in Exile now. Doubt that I will read the other 2 newish books.
As much as I'd love to get a nook/Kindle/iPad, I just don't enjoy reading off of a screen. I really like having something physical that I can bend, fold, etc.
That's the top criticism for ereaders but when I saw a Kindle for the first time it looked exactly like a piece of paper that moved. [editline]3rd April 2011[/editline]
[sp]winston is brainwashed then executed[/sp]
[sp]He isn't executed, the ending is ambiguous and none of the films or anything include it. I had to go back and read it, and I'm certain that he is not executed at the end of the book.[/sp]
Does anyone else listen to music whilst they read?
I usually listen to ambient/instrumental music that fits with the theme/setting of the book I'm reading. For example, while I was reading To Kill A Mockingbird a few weeks ago, I listened to some stuff from Earth's latest few albums. And now that I'm reading Paradise Lost, I'm listening to symphonic stuff while I read.
